Anderson

I feel we've always expected more than he's able to give because A) He's Brazilian B) Those youtube stepovers

He's useful to have around since he may always do a Nani and turn brilliant next season. However I don't think that he has done enough to convince SAF not to bring in another CM.

The thing about Anderson is that nobody knows when he will 'bloom'. People are constantly on his case because expectations are so big for him, because of his potential, everyone is expecting him to suddenly turn world class in a short period of time.

I am sure that if he left, probably for pennies, he will blossom at some other club and we will regret it.

I agree. In my opinion, Anderson isn't good enough.

(I am allowed to say that?)

You can, but I can't understand anyone who could say with a straight face that Anderson isn't good enough for Manchester United. He's easily good enough.

People keep forgetting the absolutely horrendous luck that Anderson's had with injuries. He was fecking brilliant at times last year when he wasn't injured, only for him to then get injured again. He wasn't great away from home, but neither were the rest of the team.

His positioning is dire but other than that he still has all the attributes to be brilliant.

Needs to happen soon though, i.e. this season if he gets a proper pre-season in him.

Maybe he's just injury prone?

Dunno, it's just pretty unlucky getting a broken leg and a torn knee ligament (is that what kept him out for ages last year?).

Either way, it's a valid excuse as to why he hasn't progressed to the extent that he's become as valuable as Nani, for example.

Surprised this hasn't been bumped yet.

Thought he was very good last night. Some lovely long and short passing, and some trademark surging runs. Hopefully its the sign of things to come, rather then another false dawn, and that the Ando/Carrick partnership blossoms.

Ha - I just posted in the other thread - was surprised to not find it on the first page.

Disappointed the fat bastard, didn't use the exclusion from the Brazil squad as motivation to maintain his fitness during the break. He'll need all of the next month and a half to lose the extra weight he has put on AGAIN.

Fergie mentioned this very issue in an interview a couple of days ago too.

But like everyone else, just hoping for an injury free season from him, because if he plays 28-30 league matches for us this season, he'll end up being a key player, and having a very good season.

*To date the most he has played in the league is 24 matches, and it should be no surprise that was also his 1st season at United.

What was Fergie's actual quote regarding Anderson's fitness/weight?...I've seen it mentioned on here a few times, but I'm yet to see the actual quote. Anyone have a link?

Probably along the lines of "lay off the pies you tubby, predator-looking bastard"

Bebe left for Besiktas and the fridge is full for Anderson. He could at least give some candies to Obertan.

I like Ando and I believe in time, he'll be back to full fitness. We will definitely need his best acceleration against better teams.

What are people on about? He was all over the park yesterday and looked to be one of our fittest players next to Fabio. Didn't look to me like he needed to lose any weight, he was able to muscle Shaury of the ball and that guy isn't a slouch.

Ugh I guess I am getting wound up by the WUMs.

I heard fergie say it on MUTV last night. He was on about how players are generally a lot more stricter with their diets off season these days and don't tend to put on the pounds when they're away.

Then he said "we know anderson has a few problems with that, but thats just the way his body is". Something along those lines.

I've heard some players actually saying its easier to lose weight during the close season. During the season their whole diet probably revolves around intake of carbohydrates (energy store) and once the season finishes they probably eat a lot less. I guess in Andersons case he goes from eatin pasta and spuds to Pizza and Kebabs

Not a WUM - mind you I find myself talking about his weight a bit too much for my own liking  He obviously got around the pitch pretty well, and did well for what was the 1st match of the pre-season.

But with the issues he has had with injury/fitness/form the past 3 seasons, I was hoping he had spent the time off, partying(but also looking after himself, after all he did miss half of last season due to injury, so fatigue and recharging the batteries shouldn't be an issue).

This really is his make or break season, and he needs to be in peak condition so that regardless of who we sign/don't sign, Fergie thinks Ando and Carrick are a viable partnership come opening day.

People keep saying this. In what sense do you mean this? He's already a good squad player. Do we not have room for squad players anymore at United?

I am sure if our midfield had a bit more quality(players simply too good to leave out) we would see a lot less rotation in the middle of the park, and Anderson is a big part of that.

As for there being a place for squad players(I'd say we won the league last season, because of the depth of our squad), of course there is....but the talent he possesses means it'll be a disappointment for all concerned if that is all he is, 'a squad player'.

Say he doesn't shine this season to the point that he is a regular starter - then while we may want to keep him as a squad player, it may also come down to Ando not wanting to just be a squad player. As is with many - they want to get regular games, especially if he wants to try play for Brazil.

As long as he doesn't get injured I think he'll cement his place this season. Am not worried about his stamina.

Both Anderson and Carrick were great last night, it's just whether we can see these performances away from home.

It would be disappointing but when you say 'make or break' you're implying that he's rubbish and unless he comes good this season he should be given the boot as he's of no use. Point is he's already a useful player who put in lots of class performances last season and hopefully can become a really really good one next season.

'make or break' doesn't mean one if either rubbish or brilliant. But that it's a crucial year as far as United and Ando are concerned.

It'll be his 5th season at United, over the last 3 seasons he has played in only 50 of our 114 league matches, and I reckon at least 80% of the matches he missed were due to injury, not selection.

We've invested a lot of time and money into him(He has to date, only shown glimpses of what he is capable of), you don't think if he had another long term injury this season, it would place his future at United in jeopardy?

I love Ando, and pray that he has an absolute monster of a season(still only 23, so plenty of time), but that doesn't mean if one were to judge his career to date it would be one of disappointment.

Didn't look overweight to me?

Ahh well photographic evidence. He is clearly a bit tubbs. If he could sort out his positioning and decision making in turn effecting his ability to keep possession, we would have a world class player on out hands.

Is this Anderson's first full pre-season with us? I remember two years ago he scored against Boca in pre-season but not sure if that was his first game of the pre-season or not

He was in Asia too and when we came back to Europe he scored a goal in our first game on the continent.

Copa America 2007, Olympics 2008, Tour 2009, Injury 2010, Tour 2011.

It's his second pre-season/tour with United.

Right so if he doesn't make the grade this season then people can finally stop putting it down to him not having a full pre-season with us (providing he doesn't get injured on this tour of course)

His form at OT last season though gives me genuine hope he's finally turning his potential into actual ability now though

He's overweight now - no doubt about it.

Have to wait and see what weight he can shed. No doubt a slimmer Anderson would be 'better' than a tubby one but at the end of the day what matters are his performances not his shape. I can think of plenty of chubby footballers that were good yet who knows how much better they could have been.

Perhaps he's just getting to the age that his natural build will be whatever it will be and he will struggle with it - it's down to the United staff to work with him, decide whether it's an issue and select him before / after other players accordingly.

I just see Norma off Shameless at the moment.
