he will probably lose 5-10 pounds before the start of the season, still going to be a bit chubby but at least he is back to his old shape.
He's overweight now - no doubt about it.
Have to wait and see what weight he can shed. No doubt a slimmer Anderson would be 'better' than a tubby one but at the end of the day what matters are his performances not his shape. I can think of plenty of chubby footballers that were good yet who knows how much better they could have been.
Perhaps he's just getting to the age that his natural build will be whatever it will be and he will struggle with it - it's down to the United staff to work with him, decide whether it's an issue and select him before / after other players accordingly.
I just see Norma off Shameless at the moment.
and against better teamsBoth Anderson and Carrick were great last night, it's just whether we can see these performances away from home.

How do you come to the conclusion that he is overweight without a doubt?
United staff have told you he's overweight or something?
Even last season people kept on saying he needed to lose weight but, after one game where he exchanged shirts, there was little evidence he was carrying any fat that was noticeable.
Call him big boned or whatever but, on the field regardless of people convincing themselves he's overweight, it doesn't seem to affect his mobility or acceleration.
Stamina is unrelated to weight, he could be cut as Nani but, that won't mean he can run around longer. In a pre-season game he didn't seem out of breath at the 70th minute mark when he'd been one of most active players, so can't even say well he's started off out of shape. If there were any problems when he joined up from his vacation time - there seems to be reports of SAF saying that's been taken care of anyway.
Don't see why he needs to shed any weight.
Apart from questioning whether or not he is actually overweight - You've more or less agreed with me in that a weight issue isn't a problem unless it affects his game in some way.
Chunky players can be fantastic players - I just think that any players carrying a few extra pounds are more likely to benefit from getting themselves a bit trimmer.

I would be prepared to bet his BMI is less than Rooney's.

While I agree with you mostly, it's not strickly true. Your weight can affect your balance and core strength, look at Maradona, most of his strength came from the fact he was a fat little git and if he'd lost that he'd have been much easier to knock off the ball.
I doubt that. Rooney doesn't look in any way overweight and his fitness levels are generally brilliant.
It's noticeable that Rooney's carrying a lot less timber this pre-season than he has in previous years. His touch also looked better than it usually does in games like these.
I reckon he's got a point to prove and will hit the ground running this season. All very encouraging.
Losing weight doesn't necessarily equal losing fat.For instance if a player has an excess of muscles, it'd be better for him to lose some them.At the end of the day it depends on how comfortable the player is and how his performances are ?
Losing weight is not the issue for Anderson, it's cutting some of that fat that he clearly has around his gut.
But if he cuts the fat then he will weigh less.
He's not really fat is he though? I thought that was just a joke we had on the Caf.
Doesnt matter how fat he is, hes still very fast and his work rate was fantastic for a good hour or so
You're right, we'll just sub him off for the last 30 minutes in every game.
Oh wait, we already do that.
Not compared to the average Joe he's not. But he's a professional footballer that's life should revolve around a strict diet and intense physical exercise.
For a footballer playing at the very top level he does look a little chunky around the midriff.

J'accuse Anderson!
I'm a HUGE FAN of Anderson.
However, at the moment I'm ABSOLUTELY LIVID with him.
It was clear with Scholes retirement that we were going to need to bring a midfielder in - no matter Anderson's credentials.
It was also clear that this was a HUGE season for Anderson! And that he was going to be likely fighting for his position in the team with whoever we brought in!
Anderson has rarely had a pre-season when he's been at the club - a succession of injuries and the Copa-America robbing him of these pre-seasons which meant that he was rarely fit when the season began and he always found himself catching up with his fitness.
Last season he attested to just this in an interview.
It is with astonishment that I see he turned up to pre-season looking like Neville Southall!
Not only does this play havoc with his knees which are dodgy anyway, but it also tells me that he hasn't exactly set his mind to establishing that position as his own. He hasn't said 'this position is going to be mine and I'm going to do everrything possible to make sure it's mine!'
Think of the best midfielder's in the world: Fabregas, Keane, Zidane, Sneijder, Iniesta, Xavi. It is inconceivable that these guys would turn up at pre-season so overweight that they cannot train - much less stake their claim for a place vacated by someone who had the position you regard as yours.
So instead of setting out his intent - he's fighting to get the weight off and risking another injury at the same time. By the looks of it the weight actually means his whole body is out of alignment which risks further knee injuries.
I really can't tell you how fuming I am at him. If this is what SAF is coping with it shows me that SAF really wants 2 central midfielders. At least 1 by the end of this transfer window - and perhaps another to follow in January.
In the meantime all respect I had for this guy has gone!

I think this is a HUGE over-reaction. Did you watch the game??? He was class and showed lots of drive, energy and stamina, he was probably the best player on the pitch and was playing with intent.
I know what your getting at with regard to this being a chance for him, maybe he has realized this, lets wait and see what happens this season before we make that call. Hopefully he gets a clean bill of health this year and we will see his improvements.
I would like to see more patience in his play and to sort out his positioning off the ball. He could be great if he matures in these areas and builds on his strenghts.

Didn't watch the game at all. This isn't a reaction to the game. Just a reaction to him being overweight. He's potentially a class player - I know that - I said he is a fan! But - he's got to make a decision that says "I'm going to prove I'm the best central midfield player in the world" (and he can be) and make sure that the rest of his lifestyle supports that decision
