UK Riots (with the exception of Manchester which has its own thread)

BBC News is showing a group of people breaking into shops in Hackney. The police are just standing in a line about 50 metres down the road, allowing it happen.

If i was a shopkeeper in London, id be barricared in with a shotgun

Looters will be shot

As i'm sure you've picked up on i like a bit of social unrest - but i hope the rioters use an ounce of their brains and target the major stores and not independent shops.

Sad to see that fella looking at the carnage of his barber shop :(

Good thing you dont make the decisions then.

Give 'em time for some spanner like you to do something stupid and 'cause full scale mayhem.

What's the problem with shooting them with rubber bullets? And you're calling me a spanner while hoping the rioters/looters are driving by some moral code to take out tesco and asda and leave smaller businesses alone

There was a guy on Sky News earlier saying it was the young people lashing out because they have no prospect of jobs or education and the government has abandoned them with cuts to local schemes etc. He even went so far as to say they'd attacked specific retail stores because they'd done nothing to help the community.
I would say it's more likely to be the prospect of some free trainers and tv's that motivates them.

fecking hell that BBC reporting sounds like she is shitting herself and I don't blame her tbh I would be the same!

I agree , I was watching Sky last night and saw 2 looters carrying a LED TV , without a care in the World.

Essentially this is anarchy now isn't it really?

In a small dose, but it's totally anarchic.

Anar-chic sounds like a rebelious boutique, sorry lads.

I saw that, 2 young lads walking side by side holding it with one arm each. Brazen as anything!

Crowd in hackney really starting to grow now compared to 15 minutes ago, here comes the police backup too. About time I think

Looking at Sky News it looks like a difficult night in parts of London.
There is no excuse for what is going on , yes the Police do have questions to answer about the shooting , but this is not helping.
Its only by sheer luck that nobody has been killed so far.

Just seen some of the footage in Hackney. Literally UNBELIEVABLE that they are rioting that close to the police and they are doing nothing.

If this was in Serbia or even anywhere in Eastern Europe those rioters would be running for their lives.

They need to water cannon, and tear gas those fecking cnuts and if that doesn't work shoot them with rubber bullets.

The idea is to not escalate a siuation where these young kids in tough area's are already at big odds with the police,

Steaming in with tear gas and shooting at them aint going to help relations.

I'm not sure why this is being met with such little resistance by police? As Bradford showed us, yes, justice can be served, many years later, but that does nothing for the people out there now, scared their homes and business are going to be burned down, or looted. Surely more has to be done to protect the people that suffer the most from this? I know escalation is a serious fear, but at what point do they decide that the fear of escalation is not as big as the damage already being caused? It also doesn't look like a situation where the action is dying out, peoples attentions are wavering, or that they are going to stop, night by night it's increasing, and spreading, and I'm not so confident they should be allowed to do this without a significant response from the police.

Also, the media blackout on events happening outside Totteham, or an inability to accurately and constantly report what is happening in these areas, I know part of it is to stop the knock-on affect and give other rioters, anarchists and opportunists the chance to increase their numbers, but at the same time, should people not know what is happening in the areas they live in? People are desperate for information, for news on what is happening where, for themselves, their homes, businesses, families and friends.

Serious question, why don't they get the Army in?

I think it's passed time worrying about relations. They need to use all the force necessary to stop what is going on because right now the kids having nothing to fear and are doing whatever they want.

And risk ending up in a shoot-out?

Alot of these kids will have access to arms that thankfully aren't being used yet..

Serious question, why don't they get the Army in?

What will the Army do that's not already being done?
I think most will agree that using force right now will just make things worse.
If they use the Police and Army to contain them in a small place , could that not incite a violent reaction from both inside and outside the cordon.

It's a tough situation. Do you risk escalating the situation, or do nothing, and give rioters a sense of uncontested power? I'm not sure it's going to stop on it's own accord, and the less police seem to do, the more people will join in.

So whats the other option, sit back and let them do whatever they want in the hope they'll eventually get bored and bugger off? While in the process, ruining homes, businesses, cars public transport etc etc

Fighting just broken out in lewisham, feck I live in the lewisham borough, now I am feeling nervous
