Thats what politicians do though - they promote both themselves and their ideology. They do so by criticising certain aspects of policy for their opposing counterparts in power, and offering their own alternatives.

If I looked out and saw half the city in flames, I'd be pretty interested in hearing an experienced politician's verdict on what went wrong. Its all the more relevant when said politician is a candidate to become mayor next year for the same city.

True. Some might say it shouldn't be so though.

I actually like Ken, compared to Boris anyway, Ken is at times amazingly funny and articulate, but I don't think he's done very well tonight, personally.

They definitely do value what they work for more than the rest of us.

The mistrust of authorities is something I was getting at. It doesn't help when they arrest immigrant store owners for apprehending thieves, which happened here...until the Federal government stepped in.

It's interesting what you say about New York but after what that city has been through I'm not surprised. Don't think it would happen anywhere else, though.

It can be soul destroying at any age and it is much harder when you are young. At one of my jobs I often supervise young people ranging from 18-25 and the biggest difference is that SOME young people will stand around waiting to be told what to do more than more experienced people and often grind to a halt as soon as they have done what they have been specifically told to do whereas an older and more experienced person will use their initiative more often. Younger people also have less job and life experience to draw on so when they do use their initiative it tends to be wrong more often than it would be with an older person. You also find that younger people tend to feel that jobs are beneath them more often than older people who tend to take pride in doing what they are paid to do no matter what it is.

That said 2 or 3 of the very best people that I supervise are 18-21 - hard working, pleasant and enthusiastic - going the extra yard without being asked simply because that is how they are. One of the best things about what I do - seeing young people succeed in life. It helps that I live in a rather nice area with nothing like the delinquency problems that many inner city areas will have. Most of the young people I supervise are living at home with nice middle class parents and earning part time cash as they work their way through Uni and the ones aren't are thinking about it.

Older people tend to be more bitter about life, gossipy in a destructive way, whingy and jobsworth.
 
The scary thing with the events of the last two or three days is it can be repeated anytime. The police are not equipped to deal with it and the mob knows that. A lot of money will need to be spent of training and extra equipment to prevent a repeat of these looting riots n the future.
 
Double the amount of police hours (through more police).

I can appreciate that but if you're not going to give thought to it then don't pass judgement? Right now he's one of the voices some people have faith in, if you know what I mean. Hope things all work out well for your missus and I hope we'll have no reason to still be discussing this in a week's time unless it's from the fallout. Political casualties please!

To add to this, it's not like they're getting good instruction either, is it? Politicians didn't give a toss for how long while there's only an acting head because of the rife corruption and other rubbish going on behind the scenes.

That's true and ones assumes that it is the premise of policing: that you need enough manpower to deal with the relatively few criminals about. Once you have large scale crime and groups of miscreants and arsonists across the country it needs something more than what the police are designed to provide.

Is there anything to learn from how the authorities have dealt with street trouble in northern Ireland?
 
Well it would have helped if the police had maintained their water canons etc.
 
Right now, as in from tomorrow morning, you need unarmed soldiers coming in. Government need to set a curfew of say no-one under the age of 21 outside after 8pm, and have soldiers out on the street in potential, and known, rioting hotpots, with back-up units ready for fast action should any trouble crop up in an unmonitored area.

Make it known that there is no leniancy if you're caught, make a certain level of physical control allowed (eg. tasers?).

How to prevent this happening again short term is beyond me.

That can kill people though. Not that in this situation any of the vulnerable people would be out there.

Same short term I don't have a clue. Civilians in police clothing?
 
Don't know where were up to but things are scaling in Liverpool. Looking like its moving towards the centre apparently but police have circled the area to stop them getting closer.

Lots of pics and videos of cars on fire/exploding on Facebook and Twitter as I have a lot of mates either from the area or went to uni there and taking an interest so getting updates all the time.

it was kicking off on parliament street about an hour ago, 3/400 down from toxteth after the cars went up, and towards liverpool one.

not heard anything since so i'd assume it's quietened down for the night.

heading in tomorrow morning unless the trains have been cancelled.
