I felt he should have been taken off when it seemed that his confidence was gone - when you're drawing, it's not the time to show faith because it looked to me like the rest of the team was unsettled.

He's only 20 though, and it can't be easy being in a new team and a new country. Needs nurturing a bit more

His confidence would be totally gone if we had of done that. The only way he will get his confidence back and show what he can do is if the players, management and fans give him the opportunity to do so.

I thought he was excellent apart from the goal though, but little mistakes like that cost you in the PL, and we'll see a few more from him. Think he'll be a top keeper but for feck sake give the lad a bit of patience, he's coming in off the back of one of Europes greatest GK's after all.

If his kicking is as good as they say it is, he really should have turned tomorrow's write-ups around by kicking the ball straight into the West Brom goal in injury time with Foster in our half.

Nice to see the players going to him after the game and talking to him. He'll definitely improve, just needs to be given time.

I see the same fear in his eyes that I saw in Foster, Pig, Barthez, and Carroll. I hope he can shake this off. A couple of clean sheets will sort him out.

Anderson, Jones and Fabio seem to be offering him goalkeeping lessons!

Jamie is fecking loving having a pop at him here.

Nev should deck him, flip the bird to the camera, tear his suit off revealing 'MUFC' on his chest, and go back to chilling in Cheshire.

Sometimes I wish we had a "redcafe goes into meltdown" thread.

I can see the fear in his eyes, and he should have been subbed off. Sheesh.

I was worried he would go for it a few seconds. Fergie would have been furious.

He'll be fine.

To go from a mid level team in Spain that nobody expects much from to United is a huge step up. Yeah, he made a mistake, but so did Reina when he came to England. De Gea will get better as he becomes more comfortable.

apart from the mistake, i think he s a bit suspect on crosses. His slight frame isn t helping him at the moment, but i m sure that within a year or so he ll gain some muscle.
Also, i think that at least in one instance today, he was heavily pushed and the ref did not give the foul. Hope we wont see more of those

I'd second this for the simple reason that we are United and the side as a whole is geared toward recovering from setbacks, we've seen it not just today but time and time again. Faith needed to be shown and was.

What are you on about - if it needs seconding (which it doesn't) surely the fact that SAF is the greatest manager in history and Livvie is just some bird on an internet forum with not the slightest hint of managerial experience or know-how?
I love Livvie, but I'm feckin glad she's not been managing United for the last 25 years - same goes for everybody here!:smirk:

Yeah, those two obvious fouls on him, only the second of which was spotted, could give the impression that he's weak in the air... if you're a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime. Anybody with a brain can see it was just WBA fouling him to try and shit him up more - you could do the same to absolutely any goalie int he world if you wanted to.

No Livie..the worst thing Ferguson could have done would have been to replace him second half...for a goalkeeper that would have shattered his confidence to smithereens and possibly damaged him beyond help!! Any other position yes...but not a gk....

He might give Lindy (sorry can't spell his whole name) a run out against Spurs...but that will seem logical to both keepers in a way..

His distribution is superb and he is natural with the ball at his feet. These are the most important things to look for in a keeper, so I am very satisfied with de Gea.

Not sure about that mate. Important yeah, but far from most important.

He's a good young goalkeeper De Gea and he's had a shaky start. It'll be interesting to see his response because the Premier League can be a pretty unforgiving league.

He'll be fine. Just have him and Gibson practise long shots in training, and he's sorted.

Pretty sure that's the only reason Gibson's still here, anyway.

Need to use a fire truck ladder if he wants to get near to Gibson's shots in training;)

Redknapp is such a muppet, spends all pre game, HT and post game going on and on about De Gea, how he's had a nightmare, basically making out he's done a Taibi or Paul Robinson for England but then goes on to defend Kenny/Liverpool in the weekend round up comments, saying its tough for Kenny trying to bed in all those new players.

Bias or what. Thank god Neville was there to balance it out. Said it was a mistake and he's nervous but highlighted how he's young and its only one game.

Fergie: "schmeichel was the same in his first away match" Good experience for him, welcome to English football.

Fergie actually remembered both teams and where the game was played. Some memory! (20 years ago)

I actually felt in both the charity shield and this one he became more confident in his area once Vidic and Ferdinand went off. Who knows maybe the injuries to the pair of them may help him settle in quicker.

How can people really judge on 2 games - imagine you've just joined united and your playing in the prem - i'd be bricking myself before I settled in.

What we need is to stick with the same back four as much as possible for the first few weeks and let him ride this out.

teams will target him on crosses and high balls in the box - he'll be fine - he just needs to bulk up and be a bit more aggressive
