We do not need to sign a new keeper. Jesus christ. Its only been 2 games. It will be fine

But again I hate to see the comments about Shay Given. He has been one of the top PL keepers for more than 10 years now. Please do not call him shite.

And he is twice the keeper than Kuszcak

Really really pleased to see so much support for De Gea on here. We've had two great goalkeepers over the last 20 years..schikes and Van De sar. Its a bloody difficult position to get right and very few in that position become "greats". With the press on his back and the probable self admission that he has made mistakes I just hope he doesn't get buggered mentally because goalkeepers just can't deal with that. He obviously has a lot of talent, shot stopping, distribution, kicking. Everything else will come, but for sure he is going to make quite a lot of mistakes this season since he is so dam young. I mean we talk about Cleverly, Welbeck etc as "the young players" who are learning...well bloody hell, De Gea is only 20 ( two years older than Pogba who is really a true rookie).. and is in the hottest position in one of the most successful teams in the world!!

Sure Ferguson has taken a risk putting a 20 year old Keeper with no premier league experience as his number one, but surely that is why he bought Lindgaard who at 27 is more than able to step in if things go tits up.

This is the same treatment Ben Foster got, all eyes were on him when VDS was injured and he was put into the community sheild game and he made one mistake and the press jumped on him. He never caught a break even when he made some very good saves for us.

You expect keepers to make saves, even the worst make them. It's the mistakes, or lack of, that make the difference between true class keeping and mediocre one. So I can see why people would overlook saves if there are mistakes.

No worries on De Gea. Give him time, he'll be fine. The mistakes he's making are a bit baffling as you'd think basic shot stopping would be the least of our worries with a young keeper, but, whatever. We know he has the talent.

I suppose the one main issue is Fergie can't really put his arm around him and work his magic, simply because David doesn't speak English. Hopefully Steele learned his Spanish well!

De Gea will be a far better GK than anything we've had other than Edwin in the last 10 years.

Patience.

The mistakes so far are obvious but I also saw some very positive things that I never saw with a Barthez or a Foster for example. These mistakes are all things you'd expect from a young goalie, nothing that can't be worked on. But his footballing skills and distribution were top notch. Don't under estimate how important these elements are in the modern day game. At this stage I'd much rather see those strengths along with the mistakes he's made than the other way round.

Feck of you spazzers, Given? Christ, Given doesn't have a quarter of the talent De Gea has. He was also fouled a few of those times where they said he 'flapped', and his distribution was fantastic, it wasn't a good game for him, but certainly not as bad as made out.

As for awful debuts, they happen. It's often not an indication that the player will be shit for the rest of their lives, see Vidic & Evra for good examples.

Top according to who? Just because you're first choice at Newcastle, let in a shit tonne of goals and save the occasional long range effort, doesn't make you a top keeper. His positioning is rubbish, as is his distribution at times. There is a reason that nobody would touch him until City came along and Newcastle laughed themselves to the bank. Lo and behold, he's replaced by a young keeper almost immediately.

gomes from spurs had an absolute nightmare first few matches int he PL and now he is one of the more solid keepers around.

De Gea is 20 and adjusting to the premiership and will need a few games to get used to it.He will be one of the best in the world, i have no doubts.

Every team in the Premiership will be being briefed to bully our new goalkeeping prospect. He doesn`t look ready to be playing with the big boys & if he isn`t brought on gently his confidence will be fecked before he`s even began. I don`t care who we have as cover in the interim but I don`t rate Kuszczak.

It`s a crucial position & one extremely difficult to fill. Could you imagine the likes of Long & Reid bullying Schmeichel or VDS? Schmeic`s would have flattened the fecking pair of them & then stood over blasting them with his big purple head!

Can`t believe Fergie has thrown him in so quickly. Any young player in any other position at OT is always brought on slowly, nurtured until ready. De Gea obviously has potential but doesn`t look anywhere near the finished article to me, physically or mentally. He`s a twenty year old Spanish kid a long way from home & Sir Alex needs to throw a protective arm around him quick!

We should test Villa`s resolve & sign Shay Given before the end of August (throw in PIG as a makeweight) I reckon Randy Lerner would bite Fergie`s hand off for a quick couple of mill profit.

Are you a bit thick? He's 20 FFS, how can he looked like the finished article in the next 4 years? Seriously, these kind of posts just piss me off.

Plus, United has a history of bringing new talents up, but it needs time and patience. Where you one of these who said Ronaldo was a one trick pony, and that Anderson, Nani, Evra nd Vidic etc will never make it?

So what? He will have to learn and adapt, and he is so talented, I dont doubt we will talk about all this next year.

But tell me, where was Schmeichel or VDS at 20? How well did they play? Did they not make any mistakes?

Obviously he is nowhere near the finished article, at the age of 20, for a goalkeeper, I think that goes completely without saying.

However, he's not your average 20 year old keeper either. You don't amass 80+ games for Athletico Madrid if you aren't near a high and consistent level.

It's the constant comparisons to VDS that are pissing me off - it was only in the last couple of years that the press started to praise him - when we signed him (at only £2 million), nobody was saying how we signed one of the "all time greats" etc. He was considered to be at the end of his career and 'finished'. I loved VDS but it's classic press revisionism - they've made their mind up about De Gea and no matter what he achieves, every article will say "recovered from a disastrous start" etc, even if it's 1 fecking competitive game.....some of the shite that's been written after the game is beyond pathetic - comparing him to a schoolboy?!?

And some people claim they don't do it to be malicious.....

Only one person has said to buy Given. I only took exception because somethink he is shite. when he is far from shite

Did you happen to hear SAF's post-match interview?

He is in good hands. Have faith.

The lad is young and has fantastic potential, he is going to make the odd mistake here & there i think thats a given, but as long as he learns from his mistakes and doesn't repeatedly make the same mistakes he'll become a top class keeper. Patience is the key here.

What will be more interesting is when one of his errors costs us points, as so far he's been fortunate that we've dug him out afterwards. That's when the criticism will ramp up, I suspect. But I have no doubts he's capable of getting through that and becoming a top player for us.

That's true. Some of the things I've read in the media suggest it's like we've just plucked this guy from the lower leagues and it's his first ever football matches and we've made a huge mistake. What the feck. The kid proved in Spain he has what it takes, he just needs time to do the same here.

He does need to bulk up though and take command of that penalty area, but that will come in time.

Exactly. I am absolutely not knocking him, I am just making the point that our young players in any other position are given the opportunity to bulk up, develop & be blooded gradually without having their confidence shredded. A goalie is arguably the most important position on the pitch & I am just amazed that Fergie has thrown him in so quickly.

We didn't have a choice really to be honest.

I think the difference is that usually our young players haven't played and been depended on so much by a quality team before. It's not as if he's come from a shit team, or a lower league, or that he has no experience. On the contrary, he has a lot of experience. Also at the same time, we have given countless opportunities to young players who haven't had the time to adjust to our level, look at Smalling, or even Jones yesterday? But I think it's immaterial, he just had some poor moments yesterday, rather than him not being ready for this level of football.

"Welcome to England."

I have every faith and agree that we all need to be patient with him. I feel he has been thrown into a massive pressure situation in which he will be in the spotlight every week, and having VDS for an extra year to give him given home games and Carling cup games would have been more Ideal.

Either way, this is a situation I feel he can handle and will come out way stronger because of. Over the coming weeks we will start to see some stunning saves and less errors, and as his confidence grows we will have a terrific keeper on our hands.

sup austin.

Would be fascinating to be able to see how the Caf would have been talking after Tiaibi's infamous blunders.

I've been trying to check the stats, and haven't found any specifics, but he was definitely one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever bought at the time, much as De Gea is.

I said this would happen, and I also said "when it does, give him time." He's remarkably talented in his own right, it'll sort itself out. Just some minor confidence troubles early on, he's mentally strong.

The media witch-hunt is ridiculous. How on earth, after 2 games, can anyone make a realistic judgement on his ability?

You do not play nearly 100 games for Atletico Madrid and win a Europa League title by the age of 20 if you don't have some ability. Even Iker Casillas raves about him and he's more of an authority on goalkeeping than hacks like Mick Dennis.

Give the lad time to adjust to a new environment, a new country and a more physical game and he'll be fine. His distribution is outstanding and, as other's have said, his mistakes seem to have been down to him "switching off" mentally - the more games he plays, the more experienced he becomes then we'll see him grow into a world-class keeper.

The command part will come when he learns English properly, as for the bulking up there's no real sign of it yet, he hasn't really been beaten in the air (and he will naturally fill out, his body shape just isn't natural ATM.) however much sky will point to those 2 times he was elbowed.

You've talked absolute bollocks for a few pages, not making one valid point. You can't rotate keepers, fact.

Well, if it was after his first game, I think there would have been some similar comments said, and rightfully so. You can't predict the future, but you also can't judge after one game.

Not to mention Tiaibi didn't have anywhere near the reputation of De Gea, and cost £4.5 million. He also played just four games in total for us. I can't really see the same thing happening here.

If we're talking about the reactions to Taibi's first game it'd be something like "Wow what a player, can't believe how good he looks. We've finally replaced the Great Dane, MOTM for me"

With the media its basically because he is a Man Utd player. He made a few mistakes in his first 2 games there's no denying that but these people bashing him seem to forget that we've come away with a trophy & 3 points away from home, hardly a disaster in fairness.

The way Redknapp slated him on Sky yesterday was bang out of order. But, like you say, it's the ABU mentality.

Yes he made mistakes but which young player doesn't?

I wouldn't necessarily agree with 'out of order' because as a pundit he's entitled to give his opinion, however stupid or biased it is.

In reality it's just a reflection of the policy of employing partisan pundits who who very much loyal or allied to one club. Alan Smith with Arsenal. Redknapp with Liverpool (along with his soft spot for Chelsea and Spurs). Neville with us. Danny Murphy with Liverpool. Souness ditto. Salgado with Madrid. You get opinions that are always given in light of their views on their own club.

As an example last night Redknapp talked about how sometimes players find playing for big clubs tough...in listing them he said Liverpool first and sort of paused afterwards.

He has made two mistake in two matches, and they haven't cost us anything in terms of results/points.

As long as he doesn't find himself too affected by the talk, then I don't see a problem here. He is a long term project.
