You both got tied up on reaching civilization and forgot that any civilization in the desert would have to be linked to a water source, and that's the priority, not people. Once you have found your water source, you have food, water, shelter and respite, you make your way to civilization afterwards. I'll explain in depth later.

Actually, I assumed that civilisation inferred that there'd be water, as wherever I end up is civilised. There are water sources all over once you're out of the desert, the job would be cleaning them. Also when I'd found civilisation, it'd be easier to contact 'the outside world', or are the phones down again?
That's it though, you don't need to reach civilization first, you can cut into the water source which is obviously going to be closer to you, and then follow that down to civilization. You're missing the point, the civilization there would have a clean water source running from it, and we aren't talking about a muddy spring or dried up river bed which you can dig into.

Exactly, and you won't find a civilization in the desert that doesn't have a natural water source connected to it, i.e a river.
The burning issue is the map and the knee and the problem combined by them.

Water isn't an issue, you have enough to get you to civilisation, the issue is the wounded knee and the map. If you can't move, you'll die, if you don't follow the map, you'll die, because the water will obviously run out and there is only one civilisation for you to find.

It's an easy choice to cover your leg up, it's the only thing you can do or you will die. However, you are now left in a dilemma because of the water situation, which will also see you die.
That is exactly what it is.
This 'water source' could be a little well, hidden behind a sand dune, the village or town would be much more visible.
Right, you have two choices, cover your knee up, and potentially wander aimlessly around the desert, or let your knee bleed, but know where you're going, roughly, but die through bleeding, definitely.
I suppose it's not a dilemma if you have already accepted death.

A dilemma being a very difficult choice, this is even slightly difficult. The water thing isn't a matter of choice, but judgement. You can't choose whether to find water or not.

The problem to solve here isn't the water, there is only the water you have, solving the map/leg issue, or at least...attempt to solve that issue is the key to everything.
A commendable goal, but given the fact that every desert I can think of is hundreds of miles long, your not doing it unassisted.
The question was a bit misleading. I was under the assumption that the task at hand was to get out of the desert, not to find a village within the desert.

The chance of finding a usuable animal carcass, something big enough to skin (how without a knife I'm not sure) in the desert is fecking astronomical. It's a desert, it's giant.

The map/knee thing isn't difficult. The map is nearly useless if you don't know where you are on it.

It's fair to say you attempted to solve the two main issues in a better way, so in that sense yes, but you still missed what I consider to be the most important thing. As I said though, your answer seemed a far better way of surviving.

Well, obviously it has flaws. It's hard to predict situations like that though, so it's a generally good idea for a "standard" encounter with the desert (if there is such a thing). But as long as I dont try to kill a camel with my bare hands to find a play to sleep, or to write a map in the sand every 100 meters then I think I would find a water-source eventually
Hmm, if you run out of water eventually, you can even drink your own piss as your last resort. Not unheard of you know

The crowing water you guys. It is in something - a bottle, better hope it is in a skin pouch or something, draw the map on it first - if you have nothing use your fingernails to scratch the map on the pouch - and then wash your wound with whatever water you can spare, then tie the map cloth around your knee. Then walk at night and try not to kill camels to take their skin. This might mean you survive assuming that the map shows where you are at the start, else you are dead anyway.
