Good news!

Valencia certainly brings a balance to the United squad.

Question: If Young maintains his level of play, and Nani keeps on providing us with attacking threat as he has been doing, how often do you think Valencia will start? IMO, Valencia is good but compared to Young and Nani, he is pretty limited in what he can do.
Good thing is that it is a long season and injuries and other stuff will surely come and we can count ourselves blessed that we have such quality depth.

I've said this elsewhere before, but not only is he a fantastic alternative to Nani on the Right, I wouldn't be surprised to see him filling in at Right back at some point if injuries keep chopping down our defence.

Didn't he also play central midfield for Ecuador at some point?

Valencia will start plenty of games, he's an outstanding winger with an unrivalled level of consistency in his position. As good as Young has been, Valencia will swing the ball into the area more regularly. He's not as tricky but what he does simply works and works well. We're spoilt for options on the wings and SAF will rotate them through the long season. He may also feature in the middle as he does on international duty sometimes.

wonder if we'll ever see Young-Nani-Valencia attacking three.

Belter of a goal. Noticeable the lift it gave his confidence too. Been horrible watching him play with so little confidence recently. Hopefully this can kick-start his season.

Yeah he needed that badly, should've got a second right before time as well, would have done him wonders.

To think that this guy raped Ashley Cole only last season - this time around he barely even dared to try go past a league two-fullback. At least he scored a cracker and laid on a chance or two. Will do his confidence a world of good. We need him back providing competition for Young/Nani as soon as possible.

The thing is, he doesn't look interested at all in taking on his fullback anymore.

With Young, at least the one thing you do get is threat from set-pieces, even if he has an off-day. And he'll swing some crosses in regardless of if he beats his man or not by cutting in on his right foot.

He did tonight.

Poor opposition, granted, but what makes you think Valencia can't "swing some crosses in" too? He made a habit of it in his debut season and he's several years away from being over the hill.

He doesn't swing in any good crosses when he's having an off-day. Not at all.

Today I thought his link-up play was good, he linked up well with both Cleverley and Fabio on the overlap, but how many times did he get to the byline and cross? Two, perhaps? I can remember one decent cross all game, to Diouf. That's not an awful lot over 90 minutes against a league two-side.

The point I was making is that even when he's having an off day, Young will swing in either some good crosses as he isn't dependant on beating his full back to get space to cross, or he will deliver a good set-piece or two allowing us to create chances. Valencia won't.

Goodison Park, hopefully.

I like Valencia, but his technique for a winger is shocking. And what in the world has happened to his crossing? He used to consistently place the ball in decent areas, but can't seem to beat the first man right now.

He missed pre season and has played most of his games this season at RB, he's going to take a while to get back to his best form. He's improving though.

His first touch and passing are very good...but because he's not a flashy, skilful player he lacks technique? Or is there something else he's lacking technically?

I think the injury still plays in his head.. Theres no way you can just forget about an injury like he had and I think in a year or two he'll be back to his best but for now he just needs games to get his match fitness close to 100%.

It's not at the moment.

Sady, totally lacking in conviction.

Personally, I don't think his dribbling is up to scratch for a winger and that's obviously a rather important attribute a player in his position should possess. Because of this he's very predictable. When he's on form I like what he offers the team, but in games when he's not awarded much space I don't think he has the ability on the ball in tight areas to keep the ball and create opportunities.

He seems to have forgotten how to beat his man though. And he's lacking technically in one aspect anyway: dribbling. He used his pace and power to get past the full-back well in the past but he seems unable to do it anymore.

Of course, he started last season in similar fashion, we just tend to forget about it as he got injured quite early on. Hopefully he will soon be as good as he was from March onwards.

An absolute beast of a winger who will need a few more games at least to get back to full fitness.

He had an injury setback in the summer just after coming back from a horrific-half season long injury - you have to remember that.

All of our wingers of late have struggled. Not sure if it's all them, or if it's the central players and defenders not getting them the ball.

He's been a bit shit even since he came back from his injury last season. Doesn't ever seem to try and get to the byline anymore. It seems like he's trying to make himself a more 'complete' player, but all he's doing is limiting his effectiveness. I loved him when he'd just wiggle his foot over the ball, then run to the byline and cross. It worked, so why's he stopped?

That's not true at all. He put in some excellent performances at the back end of last season. Most notably against Chelsea.

His more recent dip in form only came after his injury on international duty, since when he's been shunted in and out of the team and between full back and winger, so it's no great surprise he hasn't hit any kind of form.

I think he's looked worse because his crossing's been poor since his injury on International duty. When he probably wasn't entirely fit but getting through on adrenaline since his return. But we've been here before and he started to get loads of assists even after we were assured by people that his final ball is crap. He'll be fine.

He missed pre-season and played four of his first five matches this season at right-back.
