Berbatov | Fulham player

I think Berbatov was kept on simply because for all the talk about how many strikers we've got, it's really Rooney+Welbeck+Hernandez for the important competitions, and if one of them got injured for a prolonged period (particularly Rooney), we'd want Berbatov there. Not getting maximum use from him, but I can see the reasoning.

How can a good player has such chasm in opinions about his play? It is a amazing.
It is to the point that I will take a one leg Welbeck over him. The notion that he is brought on to keep possession is ridiculous. He loses possession with his limited touches done Anderson's stray passes.

I hope we sell him in January if we can get an offer of 8-10m having no intention of renewing his contract even if it leaves us a striker short going into the New Year. Great player, but doesn't bring much to the team these days anymore, and certainly not with the attitude a United player should display on the pitch whatsoever

The 5 years in between Ruud leaving and Hernandez joining is very significant and kinda negates that argument, in fairness.

I maintain if Louis Saha had been durable enough he would have been a perfect United striker
.

Bang on.

1. Firstly 4 titles in 5 seasons 3 CL finals and 1 win. Most successful period in the club's

2. I'd argue that United's biggest weakness up front is that they haven't effectively replaced Saha... Welbeck shows promise with his power, movement and pace, but lacks the touch Saha displayed.

Back to Berba... we really should have let him go this summer... and I wonder if Chicha had not been injured this summer if the story might have been different.

I think that Berba and Owen should be allowed to leave. Welbeck and Macheda can cover Rooney and Chica well.

SAF is not stupid. There is a good reason we have 7 first team forwards. If we had sold Berba, Diouf and let Owen go, and Welbeck had got his usual injury issues. We'd have had only Rooney and Chicharito to rely on with Macheda as back up.

Right now we have enough forwards to cater for all scenarios and all competitions. To the extent our forwards can even help us in the event of a midfield injury crisis.

There would be plenty of club's interested in last seasons joint top scorer in fairness, I don't think that's the problem. He doesn't want to leave.

Really? That's very optimistic of you especially given we had Champions League and Carling Cup matches to blood Welbeck in.

In anycase have you seen his performances in the latter end of the season? I could be wrong but 1 goal in 3 seasons post-February is a terrible record. (And yes I understand it's largely down to Fergie not picking him, which again says a lot for a first team striker).

Not really, he's already played in 26 Premier League games for Sunderland so Fergie clearly thinks he's ready to make the step up.

Berbatov will get more game time as the season wears on.

Is it a given that the reason Berbs didnt leave last summer is because SAF didnt want to sell him? What if he is refusing to leave because he wants to see out his contract and leave for a shit load more money in his own pocket when it expires? Just a thought....

Not a problem, there's an option to extend his contract by another year.

Yeah but would we do that? Extend his contract purely so he cant leave for free? What if he then said, fine, Ill stay another year. The upside of your game not revolving around running about is that you are likely to age well, a la Sheringham.

I dont think that is what is going on, as it happens, but when he didnt go last summer I was surprised and that was one theory that popped into my head. More likely he just thinks if he fights he can win his place back. Im sure SAF's world renowned man management has defused any resentment he was feeling about the CL final.

Gill has stated that's exactly what is going on.

Really? This is the first I'm hearing of it. You would think that might have been mentioned hundreds of times in this thread alone.

What's that? It has been? Oh.

Yes we all know about the extra year. Question is, considering next season there is a chance Berbatov would be limited to even less chances he is getting now

Do you really want that for your favourite Utd player of all time?

Anyway, I think that is what Gill is doing. he is saying these things about Berbs to deflect from the fact that he is basically an executive eunuch, the Glazers call the shots above him, SAF calls the shots below him, he just sits there doing feck all except making the tea for everyone else in the office at OT and making phone calls aforementioned people tell him too. And then, to make himself feel better about the lack of any real function he serves, he tries to make people hate Berbs by questioning his commitment. Why doesnt he just leave and become CEO of some SME somewhere and leave us all alone? The twat.

Scholes is my favourite player of all time, closely followed by Eric. Berbatov is a player who has wonderful technical ability and he's the kind of player I want to watch in a utd shirt. He will get games this season and I predict he will see out the remaining two seasons of his contract (at the very least).

Has he?

My God, I stop coming on here for a year and I am way out of the loop. What else has happened? Next you are going to tell me that Nani is the best winger in the world, Park is not United quality and Rooney should be playing "in the hole".

Welcome back, mate.

1 - agree

2-the weakness was saha's weakness. played great football when healthy but wasn't healthy enough. not really the one on one striker cheech is. he did have one great half season and united still played great stuff with ronaldo , rooney and giggs up top.

3 - berbs has to play or move on.

I don't really rate Macheda, i don't see him having a future with us either.

With Saha we won 2 titles in 4 and a half seasons, and 1 European Cup. He left in 2008.

Even if Berbatov gets a new 1 year contract next summer, so what is going to happen to him the year after? This same situation we are in now will be rinsed and repeated again.

Memory lapse on my behalf. I have no recollection of Saha in our CL winning season
he was largely injured

Larsson had a nice cameo for a couple of months though

would have loved to had him for a few years....really magic striker

Gotta love Berbs.

From F365

The Bulgarian, signed from Tottenham in a £30million deal three years ago, has made just one start in the Premier League this season.

The 30-year-old is now in the final year of his contract - although United have a unilateral option to extend by further year - and has recently been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Galatasaray, but the situation has not affected his relationship with Ferguson.

Berbatov told MUTV: "The way he treats players is unbelievable.

"Even when not playing or you're injured, he's still speaking with you and encouraging.

"He makes you feel special and lets you know your place in the team."

Berbatov feels it is up to him to impress in training and win his place back in the side. He finds playing for Ferguson inspirational.

He said: "Some players need to be pushed and others need to be talked to separately.

"For me, he just needs to come to me and tell me what to expect from the game and the training ground, then it is up to me to show I can play every game.

"I cannot speak for other players, but it is always good when the manager comes to ask how you're feeling and makes you feel calm before you play the game.

"For me, he knows how to motivate you and how to speak with you, about football or some issues you have outside of football.

"Just in the way he speaks with you in the team-talk - before important games he can make you feel like it's the last game you'll play in your life, so you go out there and want to give everything you have.

"It's great - you just need to be there to see it."

He added: "Even when we're on the training ground or go to lunch, for example, it's like he is one of the team - joking around and telling stories, asking quiz questions.

"He really likes the quiz questions and it's good because he relates with the players and he's really good like that."

Ferguson celebrated 25 years in charge at Old Trafford last weekend and Berbatov has been impressed by the way the Scot has continually renewed his side.

Berbatov said: "Every time a players retires or goes to another club, he always a back-up plan on how to replace the player and build the team again."

Berba sucking up to Fergie - it might work but Fergie too wily to fall for this old trick. Good on Berba though he knows he has to do it in training and then excel when he has the chance.
