We actually paid Bristol Rovers quite a hefty sum (relatively speaking for a 16-17 year old) for him. He's not really a product of our youth setup.
The only explanation I can think of is for Vidic to cover our right flank because Smalling/Jones normally gets too far up and Nani usually drifts too far centrally to offer any cover whereas Evra is covered by Young/Park usually.
