He hasn't really improved outside of the box - in it he's a predator, but he'll need to show more in terms of link-up play, or else this Welbeck fella will take his place.

I think last season we saw that he is definitely capable of the link-up play and I imagine with time he'll definitely improve that area of his game immensely. For whatever reason though he seems to be struggling with that part of his game lately, he's been like this most of the season. It could very well be down to fatigue due to little rest over the summer and then his injury lay-off. Who knows, but he keeps scoring regardless of how poor the other aspects of his game are currently and in the end that's all that really matters.

I don't think it's true to say he hasn't improved outside the box. I'd say he has. Granted he's not suddenly going to be amazing at linking play but he has definitely improved.

We all know that's not what he's about though. He's a predator.

I agree this may hurt his chances of being a starter in big games though.

That's a strange statement to make when it has been pretty obvious that Welbeck seems to have been ahead in the pecking order so far. When it comes to playing the big teams I think Welbeck is going to be preferred and Hernandez will be seen as our threat from the bench should we need a goal.
It isn't strange. Hernandez started the season injured. Once he got back he has been hitting the net ever since.

We made the mistake of dropping him when we faced City and paid a hefty price. We'd be fools to do it again.

If we want goals off the bench Welbeck can provide that. What we need Chicharito for is goals when we are on top. Especially in the first half of games.

It really shouldn't. If he had faced City from the start for example we'd not have finished first half a goal behind with all the possession we had. VS Barca is the only big game in which starting him would be pointless.

Dont kid yourself, we had all the possesion in the opening 30 mins but it counted for nothing. We were passing the ball around their defensive block of 4 defenders and midfielders. We created next to zero of clear cut chances so Henrandez woulde have been idle. In addtion Henrnadez needds space behind the back line and City played deep. IMO starting Welbeck- who can dribble past markes and goes wide dragging his player out -was a better choice.

But it will.

Fergie has always been big on strikers doing much much more than "just" scoring.

Just ask Andy Cole.

As noodle said before

"He keeps getting more and more offside and closer and closer to the six yard box!"

Nothing wrong with that if he keeps hitting the net though.

To be fair to the lad his play for mexico (from what I've seen) seems a lot more expansive and he's much more involved in the build up play.

He said in a recent interview that he was instructed by Fergie to play as high as possible and stay on the last man constantly, so it would be unfair to criticise him as limited when he's ultimately following instructions.

Him being in the team may put more creative responsibility on to the rest of the team but they should be able to handle that.

Exactly. He was at his best during the Gold cup. That assist in the final was a peach  I remember watching it with my brother and he just looked at me and asked, "Was that Chicharito?" :smirk:

Chicharito in the EPL so far this year:

5 goals in 7 starts [with 4 substitute appearances]
In all those games he's taken only 13 shots, 9 on target
brace against Bolton
came on for the leveler against Liverpool
came on to assist for our only goal against City
winner against Everton
winner against Swansea

And here I was thinking he'd started a bit quieter than last season.

Admittedly, he's had 1 start and 4 substitute appearances in the CL without a goal or assist, with 6 shots and only 1 on goal.

Still very impressive overall. Really hard to chose between him and Welbeck, but it's hard to argue against Chicharito.

Scores again, sorta like his first goal against Chelsea in the Community Shield, he may not have done it on purpose, but it went it because he gets himself into scoring position...and the gods are with him.

He was actually good today. He had a great first ten minutes. Taking players on. Getting involved. Then he had a bad period where nothing was going for him. Shots not coming off or passes. He got it back together in the second half and I'm pleased with his performance today.

He's becoming a more dangerous player. Can't wait to see him run at defenses soon!

Couldn't control the ball on a few occasions, missed crucial chances, and missed easy passes. He wasn't shit, it's just a knee-jerk reaction by me which I refrain. Scored a goal, and was unlucky not to score more.

F*cking hell, time and again he scores crucial goals for us - I don't seen anyone else doing this for United - yet some want him to be Platini. We're bloody lucky we've got Javier; in fact, if it wasn't for the newer players, the senior players' form/complacency would have us scrabbling around for a CL place.

Honestly his first touch / control is actually quite shite  Quite wasteful and although he didnt do it today, hes offside waaay too much given his speed.

But hes always in good positions to be scoring and his movement is excellent.

He was a lot better today and highly unlucky not to score a second. If he continues to be involved like that he'll becomes even more dangerous.

Hernandez could have easily been the match winner today, his overall play was a bit off but the criticism he's getting is baffling. Rooney for a senior player was worse today for me and didn't step up when he was needed, he got frustrated and made poor decisions however he hasn't been criticised at all (yet). Hernandez gets the job done most of the time, that said I'd like to see Welbeck and Rooney develop a partnership.

His first touch has been poo the last two games. As far as his passing goes, it isn't really his strength so one can understand it.

Basically his game is all about movement, making quick bursts and finishing. His finishing has let him down today despite scoring.

also nonsense.

Some of you lot.... clueless.

I dont see whats wrong with that statement except for the fact that I was meant to say at times tbf.
But yeah, his control and first touch at times is quite shocking.

His passing in the final third has gotten a lot better, it seems to me. He was seeing all kinds of runners and holding the ball up pretty well.

What I do love about him is that he is always in the right position to score. Even when he doesn't mean it.

Plus when he receives shit passes he is always in a positive mood, he doesn't get visibly frustrated at others, he keeps going.
Yes there are many things he could improve (the technical aspects of football) but he's scored at least.

He wasn't shit but wasn't good either. Not sure when was the last time he put in a great performance, maybe Bolton away? Surely, he scored the winners in the last away games, but the performances weren't excellent.

Last season he surppassed all expectations which made him flying This season the expectations are quite different and his performances suffer from it. We should be patient though.

BTW, when was the last time when we scored more than 1 goal in the league with Chicharito and Rooney up front?

Basically every game this season til City crushed our confidence and we started playing like a sack of s-t.

Chico's a good player. Had good moments today, had bad moments. When it started going pear shaped for him after the opening 10 or so minutes he didn't let his head drop and kept making the right runs ultimately yielding our goal and what should've been our winner cos it was never offside.

Can't see why so much criticism should be aimed at a £7m striker who's done so marvellously since he got here. If he was boosted by better form from the senior players, not to mention some actual creativity from midfielders, he'd be top of the scoring charts year in, year out.

There are a number of established United players who are not justifying their places, and haven't done so for quite a while.

Also let's not forget he's not had a proper pre-season, he'll be back at his best soon. It's very good he's still scoring goals when not playing extremely well.
