FC Basel Vs Manchester United

What? No Morrison this time Sean? ;)

I suspect that line up will be correct BTW.

He'll be on the bench :)

And this is a big possibility if Berbatov, Rafael and Fabio are still out.

Possible bench players: Lindegaard, Amos, Kuszczak, Evans, Fryers, Gibson, Pogba, Morrison, Valencia, Young, Welbeck, Macheda, Diouf

Out: Chicharito, Berbatov, Carrick, Owen, Anderson, Cleverley, Rafael, Fabio

Rafael is fine isn't he? I think I saw that Berbatov would be OK too. Can't see him making the bench. Wouldn't be surprised if he travelled though for the experience.

Hernández is out until next year I think. Should be early January though if we're lucky, might be able to come on against City in the FA Cup. Berbatov I'm not sure on but I'd hope he could make the bench for this, I think we should play three in midfield though due to missing Carrick, Anderson, and Cleverley.

Lindegaard; Smalling, Evans; Morrison, Young, Valencia; Welbeck

Smalling could well start again at Right Back, despite coming back from injury and playing so many minutes right away. Jones would then start in midfield again and Gibson on the bench. Might be more likely to be honest, but as long as we have a 433 I think I'll be more happy. Got to miss this game and the Wolves game due to work, after missing half the Villa game too, pretty disappointing...

Hope we win and Benfica slip up. but if Benfica win I couldn't care less if we just draw this without too much trouble and get done with the Champions League for a while. No injuries though!

I'm in 2 minds about this. I glad its on ITV so I can watch it in the comfort of my own home, but then again, we never seem to do very well when my Mrs is watching and we need to do well on Wednesday.

Should I give her a fiver & send her off to the pictures?

Fiver for the pictures? Closer to a tenner these days mate! More if you wanna treat her to some popcorn and a drink...

Basel have been doing very well - in very good form and they seem to be very confident

SUBS: Lindegaard, Rafael, Evans, Gibson, Valencia, Young, Welbeck.

This looks right to me. I'd rather see Park on the left and Nani on the right for this one. Park will be fresh from having not played on the weekend, and Nani is more effective from the right. With Vidic, Jones, Giggs, and Rooney playing through the center, that would be very tough team to beat.

We only need a draw right?

UEFA cup for us this year unless we find a performance.

Basle (top of the table ) beat the team in 2nd 1-0 at home yesterday. Wont be easy but we should do it.

We'll get at least a draw.

I wouldn't fancy our chances in the next round against some of the sides that have topped their group though.

Haven't they changed manager since we last played them too?

Yeah, but its shit. When do we ever play 5 at the back and without any wingers

When we're out of form, playing a strong side away from home and we have to avoid defeat at all costs wouldn't be a bad time to start.

Of course that side isnt set up to win a football match but it doesn't need to. This isn't about winning the game, the sole aim Wednesday night is to not lose, and if playing 5 at the back helps us achieve that it's the way to go.

It's the sort of thing McClaren did when he was England manager. We're better than Basel and haven't lost away from home in yonks so why change a formula that works? If we want to be conservative, we play Rooney up front alone with support from Nani on the right and Park left with Giggs in behind and two runners in Fletcher and Jones in midfield. We'll shit on them.

No way Manchester United should play with that attitude ever!!!!

I would hate it even if we're going through.

I would rather lose a game with a attacking attitude.

What was your reaction to the Blackburn 1-1?

The old double inverted triangle formation, classic.

If we don't play cautiously we'll just get opened up on the counter and be playing Europa League football after Christmas. Remember this is a Basel side that shouldve won at OT if they're finishing was half decent in front of goal, and a side that rarely loses at home. They will create chances and plenty of them, the important thing is that we lock up at the back, leave with that clean sheet and stroll into the last 16.

Bit different when both teams are playing for the draw in the last 20 odd minutes isn't it? We still went behind and had to get back into that game.

Basel will want the win, playing for a draw doesn't figure for them at all in this game. So it doesn't figure for us either.
