He admitted to calling Evra "Negro".
He is arguing that it's perfectly OK where he comes from and that he did not mean to offend Evra.
He has not apologised for the offence the so called "misunderstanding" has caused Evra and instead his club started a smear campaign calling Evra a drama queen and saying (incorrectly and libellously) that he has used the race card in the past.
He's being serious for once. He said something I said earlier, Suarez only got 8 matches...because the IC took everything into consideration. He got off lightly.
For them, it's a perfect storm of perceived 'enemies':
1. The press (after the Hillsborough coverage)
2. The FA (for continually favouring United, of course)
3. Manchester United itself
These elements just reinforce the 'Us against Them' mentality, to the point where, it seems, everyone's a liar or an idiot unless they agree with LFC's position. Some aspects (see '1.') of this mindset are understandable, considering what Liverpool's people have gone through in relatively recent times; however, much of the angst truthfully stems from a non-acceptance of the club's failure to match United on & off-field. We'd expect this curious behaviour from some sections of the Liverpool support, but from the club itself? The management's support of Suarez seems like an unholy mixture of standing-by their player (commendable in theory; but not, it appears, in practice) and a desperate, wrongheaded plea for future loyalty from an important asset. In all this, Liverpool has failed to see the bigger picture - that the club genuinely is bigger than any player. It appears they are willing to sacrifice integrity for short-term success; it's obviously not about 'Us versus Them' - it's all about 'Us' or rather 'Me': outdated thinking & the desperation to succeed or be sacked (yes, Kenny...) and the continual patronisation of the club's fanbase by the owners...how long before CEO Ian Ayres starts muttering about 'breakaways' and 'seperate tv deals' again?
I think we all have to keep in mind this is the first real suspension of note for a prominent player charged with such an offense.
Pexbo's comment shows how out to lunch they (they being LFC players management and lawyers, and Suarez and his handlers are)... and how they missed an opportunity to show everyone that LFC is about fair play and sporting issues. We all get it, sometimes in the heat of battle, players say things they shouldn't... and no battle is hotter than us vs Liverpool. Even once it appeared that the tide was turning against Suarez, if the player had held up his hand and sincerely claimed that he had done this, and said something along the lines of "I didn't think I was being offensive, but I now know and understand that what I did was not acceptable"... I'm quite sure he would have been slapped with a smaller ban akin to Rooney's swearing to the TV cameras. Couple that with the club wearing some anti-racism shirts and some choice photo ops of Suarez doing some community service in black neighborhoods and LFC could have come away from this incident with a degree of respect.
Instead they chose to attack everyone and put the blame on everyone but themselves. And I don't mean turning their back on Suarez (in theory i see the point of standing up for the player, but not in the manner they did). Players have come back from off the pitch racist incidents (Woodgate for one). SteveJ hit the nail on the head with his comments... time to put an end to the "self pity city" moniker.
I notice that several prominent current and former Black players have come out and spoken out about the shirts LFC wore in warm up yesterday... good for them. Those voices need to be heard. I haven't gone through this rather large thread, but have there been any meaningful quotes from former / current black Liverpool players John Barnes, Paul Ince, Glen Johnson... ect?
And one last thing... Liverpool... you thing the FA is harsh on YOU and that we have them in our back pocket?!?
1. Cantona (the longest ban imposed for an on-field incident in FA history)
2. Ferdinand (6 month ban for the very same offense a City player... the team hardly matters TBF... had done several months prior and received no ban at all... who then passed a much more stringent drugs test later that same day, which he paid for himself) This one still pisses me off
3 Ronney (3 game ban for swearing in APRIL... while United were in the hunt for 3 trophies... 3 games for swearing, really?!?)
Yep, we really do have the FA on our side
