Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

If 'lively' means 'doing feck all and giving the ball away in dangerous areas on a regular basis', I agree entirely

I think the journos have momentarily forgotten this isn't the 1950's, and we can all watch the game with our own eyes with TV coverage, and judge for ourselves

I think with Bale we have gotten glimpses of his ability this season yet against top teams he always goes missing apart from his one off show against Inter which was down to Maicon being wank.
I think the signs are there though for Bale to develop into a top top player in a year or two.
He seems to be a left sided version of Antonio Valencia only not nearly as good but Bale has a wicked left foot that could score plenty more goals in seasons ahead if he reaches his potential. Theres definitely a lot more to come from him.

Imagine all the 'inconsistent' talk if nani put in a performance like that. On the other hand Bale gets praised for playing shit.

HOOOF ! CHASE !!!

Redknapp should rinse that cash cow dry then go buy a footballer instead.

I reckon Liverpool will buy him for some ridiculous fee.

Might put in the odd good ball for Carroll and give them some much needed genuine width, but he'll soon be found out for being decent but nothing more.

Much as Bale was over-hyped when playing well he's getting under-rated now he's in poor form. Such is the way of the caf.

He's been injured on and off for months now. Never had the run of games needed to get some form. If he turns out to be a career sick-note (which is a possibility) he'll never amount to much but if he does have a full pre-season chances are all the hype will seem a lot more deserved by the beginning of next season.

I don't think hes being under-rated, just being judged against the standards he's bizarrely now being set against.

The funny thing about Bale being player of the year is, if he signed for a club like United or Chelsea, and then performed to the same level, he'd currently be getting written off as a huge flop.

People on here thought it'd be a good deal if we paid £30 million for him. What is it with football fans and not being able to see the difference between form and actual talent/potential?

He was excellent for pretty much the entire second part of last season. It's true that's he's been very underwhelming and inconsistent this season, but the level he showed in second part of last season was definitely worthy of hype. The journos and fellow players are just a year late in their praise.

He was never 'tearing teams apart' (aside from Inter) - that's part of the myth.

No, the myth is that he only played well against Inter. He also ran riot against
the likes of Chelsea (and your lot) towards the end of last season and played very well in a bunch of league games last summer/autumn.

Regarding that last question, it's as much an issue now as it was when he tearing teams apart at the back end of last season/beginning of this season.

Even when he was in great form he still wasn't the best wide player in the league, let alone world. He just hit a good run when Spurs happened to be in the spotlight and playing well as a team, and for some reason everyone went ridiculously overboard.

Remember that season when James Beattie scored about 30 goals in the Premiership and became the next Alan Shearer? Or when David Bentley was the new and improved David Beckham? People are idiots

He looks woefully out of form. Then again, I never understood all the hype after a few good performances.

What's happened to his Beckham-esque dead ball ability?

More myth, he was anonymous against us last season at WHL (and twice this season - last week a good example). All the games I've seen him play this season in the league he's been comfortably outplayed by the full backs from Sagna, through Steinsson, to Neville to Ivanovic.

He doesn't seem to have a clue when faced with one-on-one with a defender. He seems to work best when running onto through balls in space behind the full back and crossing. The coaches have found him out, and playing the full back deeper.

How is Bale the POTY! Anonymous again last night! Football players should not vote, everyone knows most of them are thick.

I'd support this if not for the fact that writers and fans have given even stronger evidence that they should not be allowed to vote either this year.

Usually, the writers tend to look for a more sensible and less hyped choice than the players, but this year they seemed to abandon all reason in favour of looking for the most unsung hero in the league.

Parker has overnight become an even more oversung unsung hero than Claude fecking Makelele.

This. Weirdly so, he didnt get all that hype when he was that good i.e 2nd half of last season and when this season he's been inconsistent and rather underwhelming, the hype is through the roof.

I think he just attains extra hero status because his hair makes him look like a world war 2 pilot.

I've been wondering about that as well. When he was at Southampton he was supposed to be a free-kick specialist but since he's been at Tottenham that part of his game hasn't been particularly great.

I reckon if Walcott had gone to United instead of Arsenal he'd be a better player than Bale now. Wenger's turned him into a shot shy fanny boy.

In fact he might even be a better player anyway if you put him in the Spurs team where his wing play wouldn't also be rendered utterly pointless.

I don't understand why Walcott hasn't progressed.

Imo he could become better than Bale and has more potential talent.

Bale is FAR superior to Walcott, I mean I get the Bale over the top hype hate, but cmon man. Never found Walcott to have more potential either, Bale has crossing, is only slightly slower and is a smarter player, definitely to makes smarter passes and is more involved in build up play from what I've seen.

Shame, it was a dreadful tackle - Blackpool should consider themselves fortunate to be a club too small for the media to want to drag Adam over the coals so the FA can ignore it.

Bale has been a lot better, way more productive and more consistent so far this season than he was last, yet is not getting anywhere near the same level of hype.

I got sick of hearing about him last year but now I'm watching thinking what a good season he's having and nobody is talking him up in the same way. Bizarre.

His bursting runs really killed Chelsea, he was just so goddamn quick... Nothing in it, just a tap and run.

I think he's not getting the hype as he hasn't scored some beauty's like last season but he's getting more and more consistent which is better.

Why oh why didn't we fight that 12m price tag when he was in Southampton...

Aye I've noticed this. I think the majority of his hype came from their european campaign or even specifically from that one game against Inter.

30 games, 7 goals, 1 assist last season.
14 games, 5 goals, 6 assists so far this.

Much of the hype last season was due to the Champions league. Didn't he score a hattrick in one game against Inter at the San Siro and then a hattrick of assists in the game at WHL?
