Thought Houghton was a right midfielder. Played like that for Liverpool no?

I'll mainly be playing a 532 so will need a midfielder comfortable in the middle and on the right, and go to the right entirely in a 343 or a 442 with Di Livio coming in from right wing back into the middle as a defensive midfielder as he often did.

With my final pick I will need a central midfielder proper though this is a range of things I can do with my current players, when I get one that will increase my options substantially.

Di Livio, Tassotti, Baresi, Sanchis, Le Saux

The assigned stadiums are merely to add colour to the game, they do not have any material impact on the competition ie there is no influence (home advantage, crowd support, familiarity etc) on the players and the match at all

Polls will last 1 day, except for the semi-finals and final which will last 2 days. Polls are open to all Redcafe members to vote. However, managers and assistant managers must not vote in matches of their group nor the group which provides their next opponent in the knockout round (Managers and assistant managers of teams in Group A or B cannot vote in both Group A and B matches. Managers and assistant managers of teams in Group C or D cannot vote in both Group C and D matches). Non-compliance could result in expulsion from the competition. To enforce this, the votes in polls will be made public. 30 minutes before the poll closes, I will make a final call for votes. 5 minutes before the poll closes, I will post the votes tally and this will be the final result of the match.

Good stuff Pols.

What is the significance of the 12th player? Is he a substitute or a reserve?

Hope you have had a great Christmas day kps88:)

The 12th player is a substitute, part of the matchday squad. Group winner gets to pick one player each from the two eliminated teams to add to his squad, followed by the group runner-up's turn. In the knockout rounds, winner of the tie gets to add one player from the losing side to his squad. This means that by the final round, each of the two finalists will have a squad of 16 players to choose their starting XI from. In choosing for the team that would most likely win the match, voters have to consider the starting XI, tactics, team balance and bench strength, with players considered at the level they were at in their prime :)

a 12th player?! What 12th player???

What is different this time round are the players and the competition format.

All players born in the 1960s (1 Jan 1960 to 31 Dec 1969), bar Diego Maradona, are available for drafting. For the purpose of this competition, these players are considered at the level when they were in their prime. Each manager gets to pick 12 players to form a squad.

Competition format is identical to that of the Euros - 4 groups of 4, top 2 in each group advance to the quarters. Group winner gets to pick one player each from the two eliminated teams to add to his squad, followed by the group runner-up's turn. In the knockout rounds, winner of the tie gets to add one player from the losing side to his squad. This means that by the final round, each of the two finalists will have a squad of 16 players to choose their matchday team from.

I'm not in favor of picking a player from the losing teams. Kind of defeats the whole draft. You can just chuck one out for one of the best player ever. Some players get more lucky than others.

It does not defeat the whole draft, voters have to consider the starting XI and bench strength, the whole squad counts, every one of your original 12 picks counts. And there are 3 group matches to determine which two teams out of four progresses to the quarter-finals before they can pick players from the eliminated sides to add to their squads.

Personally though, i do not mind sticking to the 12 players of the draft.
However, to effect this change, it should be with the assent of all 16 managers.

I go along with sticking with the original 12

Appreciate if the remaining managers can state their views on this. If there are no objections to Snow's proposal by the completion of the draft, we will effect the change - no additions to the original squad of 12.

I like the added element of choosing a new player from a losing team. Makes things more interesting for the voters as well I think.

I pick the greatest player from Belarus ever and part of the Soviet Euro 1988 runner-ups: Sergei Aleinikov

I take it that you are kidding

Does that mean that you object to Snow's proposal?

I picked players knowing that if I got through the group stages I would get two more and so forth, I'd be annoyed if it changed because people didn't read the rules through.

Sticking with the ethos of players at their peak I'm surprised this guy hasn't been picked yet.

Need him to add some steel to my midfield. I trust the matches will be voted for under the presumption that the referees use 80's standards - and not the present day namby pambys who would take a dim view of Big Norms rough-house play!
