Nobody has ever said we're the only team and we look down at others and so on, but it has to be said there is no higher team you can play for, There are players the world over working their balls off to get to sign for someone like Manchester United, that to be offered a position within the club where they will develop you and make you rich whilst really competing for a prolonged period rather than a flash in the pan team thats hit good fortunes. Then when that team offers a kid they hold in high regards and he ponders it over joining another club well that alone should be answer enough.

Sure, there might not be a club higher than United but there are clubs 'like United' (for e.g. Juventus). I think this is what the point is. We're not something special in that regard, in particular for a continental player. And we should always keep that in mind.

How is Juventus 'like United'?

They're more 'like' Liverpool, minus the recent CL win. A club with a noble history but little or no recent success of note.

People need to pull their fecking heads from out their arses and realise that most continental players don't give a shit about playing for United. People think the whole footballing world revolves around us.

You sound like a bunch of arrogant twats at times.

Don't be arrogant, Pogue, you cannot acknowledge the fact that United have been more successful over the last fifteen years than every other team in Europe except Barcelona. Ryan Giggs' medal collection does not exist.

I'm willing to bet that most continental players would love to play for United.

Oh yeah, since they've not won anything recently they can't be a club like us. I do apologise. Anyway, Juventus are challenging for the Serie A (and look favourites to take it) this season and are set to compete in the UCL next season. Pretty much what we are offering Pogba currently in terms of football prestige.

What if Pogba genuinely does really want to stay, but we are offering him something really shit? Something that would surprise any of us if we knew the figure.

Surely then you'd sympathise with Pogba. It's definitely a possibility.

And this is not that far fetched if you look at our recent results what with our wage bill's hefty growth and it now being more than 50% of revenues.

Paul Pogba's absence from the Manchester United squad last night has led to more rumours that he will leave Old Trafford in the summer.

The highly-rated 18-year-old, who United snapped up from Le Havre in 2009 amid 'tapping up' claims from the French club, was expected to start in the Europa League last 32 match against Ajax on thursday after sitting on the bench for the 2-0 win in Amsterdam last week.
But Pogba was not in the 18-man squad as reports from Italy continue to claim that the teenager has agreed a four-year deal to join Serie A giants Juventus next season when his United contract expires.
Sir Alex Ferguson criticised the midfielder's representatives recently and urged Pogba to "look round about him to realise" the rewards that could lie ahead of him at Manchester United.
But the Reds boss is now believed to have issued the player with an ultimatum to sign the deal that has been on the table from the club or he won't be consideredfor first-team duty any more.
He hoped the influence of former club skipper Rio Ferdinand could be a key factor in Pogba's decision on his future and the two were seen deep in conversation at the Amsterdam Arena last week.
"Rio has become an important figure at the club, he is good with the players," Ferguson told The Daily Telegraph. "He is good with the young players.
"At the moment, he is working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure, but Rio is well regarded [by him]."

The media making up things again. How in the bollocks have they come to conclusion that Pogba was to start last night? SAF never ever said such or even anything remotely close to that.

Correct. And by "recently" we're talking about the comparative records of the two clubs over the last 10 years. Apology accepted.

I'm willing to bet that most continental players would love to play for United.

Sure. But simply the fact that we're United won't sway them if they also have offers from Juventus, Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern etc. I'm willing to bet most continental players wouldn't rate United above these clubs, merely on a par with them. And many of them prefer Spain and Italy to England.

And "the likelihood of success based on past successes" is a total fallacy, going by that argument every player should have joined Liverpool in the nineties. If Pogba thinks he'll get more money and more opportunities at another Champions League club, it would be a big surprise if he stayed simply because it's United.

Thing is, you can argue that there are other clubs of our level out there who might pay more but at the end of the day there will always be enough players that we don't need to worry about it. It'd be annoying to have to find someone else but it's always an option. Until the day that every club our level starts offering much more than us it's not really an issue, we might lose a few players but we won't lose everyone. There will always be an alternative. So I'd rather take the hit and lose the player than give in to their demands. Once you do that then you've set the precedent. I've said before with Rooney it was bad, but at least he was a world star, but in Pogba's case he's done nothing and is not even guaranteed to reach any of his potential.

What utter nonsense; if you leave utd then you're taking a step down. The only exceptions to this are the two Spanish giants. Frankly I would only call a move to either of them a sideways step.

I think you're proving their point about how United supporters see it. When you look at a club like Bayern Munich it is hard to argue that we are bigger than them. Many would probably put us level.

those quotes are older than Pogba himself.....

Like Liverpool? Juventus were champions but got sent down a league because of crooked administrators in their club. They lost all their team a part from Del Piero and Buffon and had to rebuild. Excusing United as a team in transition is all well and good but it's nothing compared to what Juventus have had to do.

It's not hard at all; their history might be similarly illustrious but the league they play in is the third or fourth best in Europe, plus Utd have a bigger support worldwide. All things remaining equal most players would rather join Utd than Bayern.

I think you'll find that this is the case. Everything I've been told suggests he's a really good kid, works hard and wants to stay but isn't being offered what he's worth.

I'd SAF's greatest quality along with his man-management is to judge correctly the potential of young players. Also, if what you're saying is true, then I've no doubts an agreement can be reached.

However after reading Zlatan's autobiography and knowing how much a cnut Mino Raiola can be, I doubt that's the case.

There you go again. First he's being asked to stay "on the cheap" now he's not being offered "what he's worth". Do you know what's he's been offered by United?

You don't, eh? Ok then. As you were.

I find this post hilarious bearing in mind the complete breakdown you had over Ljajic and how he was treated. Whilst we're on the subject, how is he doing nowadays?

This is not going to end well for United or Fergie. if a talent like Pogba is allowed to leave then it makes a mockery of the clubs stance on developing their own talent. Im sorry it does. The argument for not paying the big bucks for players because "we develop our own stars" will be invalid for the gaffer because the media will throw this Pogba thing at him.

Hasn't played that much for Fiorentina, and been criticized by their head coach for his poor attitude.

Glad you find it hilarious. Although your sense of humour leaves a lot to be desired.

As for ljajic, feck knows what he's got to do with any of this. When the MUFC website publishes a photo of a beaming Pogba beside Fergie announcing he's signed a long term deal, only for it to somehow never happen I'll understand your analogy. Failing that you're just talking bollox in the wrong thread.
