Berbatov | Fulham player

I'm astonished that you lot are taking fergie at his word. He lies, all the time. He swore that veron was staying until the day he left.

He probably said something along the lines of Berba being here next year but not definitely.
Either way I've learned to not buy into anything regarding transfers unless a club officially talks about a bid.

Good record when starting as well. People keep saying he only punishes lesser teams, but you need players like that who can unlock teams who put ten men behind the ball etc.

I do think he has deserved more minutes than hes been given.

Great attitude, wouldnt blame him if he wanted to leave, but more than happy if he stays.

I agree. I remember the 09 season - we were stacked with talent and almost all teams parked the bus. We had some nervy games against lower-tabled teams.

Who cares if Berbatov 'only scores agaisnt lesser teams'. He scores when he plays and goals need to be scored against the crap teams.

I love Berbs. He's quality and should play more. However, given SAF clearly has reservations about playing him, I wonder whether he's worth his wages. It's a lot of money to spend on someone sitting on the bench week in week out. If we sold him and had someone who fits the system better as 4th striker maybe it would be a better use of the money.

It feels wrong saying that tho. Because I think he is worth the money and we should play him.

I really dont understand why the Welbeck - Hernandez partnership is favored over Berba and either of them when Rooney isnt available. Its just not a very good partnership, and Berbatov is a better player than both of them. The only reason Welbeck plays ahead of Berba in the first place is that the Rooney - Welbeck partnership is a lot better than Rooney - Berbatov.

Hernandez is also a better player to bring on from the bench. Would much rather see Berbatov and Welbeck from the start and then Hernandez coming on if it isnt working.

Yep for me if Rooney is out then I think Berba or Young needs to come in. We need that creative player there who can provide a link for the attack. We're so much better when we have someone in that space. Welbeck isn't bad at it but he's much better as the main striker up top and Hernandez does not have enough to his game to do it.

How many times has welbeck been clean through only to fluff his chances? Sure Berba wont get into as many positions but he is far more clinical.

Shame he didnt play today.

Imagine the amount of shit that would have been thrown around here if it were Berbatov missing those chances Welbeck fluffed today.

Welbeck really seems to get away with a lot because hes a young and local lad. Some even saying he had a "fantastic game" :wenger:

He is for me the type of luxury player that you pair with Rooney at Old Trafford only because you know it is safe enough to play him. We don't rely on him because we cannot afford to and it's a real shame because he is an exceptional talent. For me he just doesn't fit. We have 3 very athletically strong strikers complimented by two pacey wingers and Berba does slow our game down. He is better suited to a slower paced team.

I said it before the game, if SAF doesnt trust him enough to play him even when Rooney his out, he should be allowed to leave end of the season. He's far too good and at far too high wages to be sat on the bench even when we need to score with 10mins left of the game. I was baffled when he wasnt brought on after we conceded.

Our game hasn't generally been fast in a long time. We didn't even attack for 60 minutes today.

If Rooney isn't playing Berba should definitely be in there instead of Welbeck. Suprised to see them two start together up front. Wasn't much in it for them. Berba would definitely have been better in a 4-4-2 that SAF chose. In fact I think he should have started alone up top.

I think the only reason SAF decided against Berba was that he had decided on a midfield of Giggs and Scholes. He wanted welbeck running to help out. If Valencia was fit then he would have dropped one of Giggs/Scholes and likely dropped Welbeck/hernandez for Berba.

I dont think its as simple as a straight swap of Berba for Rooney.

We werent playing fast football at all today. we were building up patiently and were far from too fast for berba. You are painting him up as some kind of a liability, he's far from that. I am totally in favor of either of welbeck or hernandez to partner rooney but when he's out, berba should play for sure imo.

Indeed

That's probably true but in that case then I think he could have brought in Young there instead. I just don't think Welbeck and Hernandez is a good choice in tough games. Welbeck is still raw and Hernandez doesn't have enough to his game at the moment to compensate.

If Rooney is out we should always be playing Berba with Welbeck or Chicharito. The only exception should be if we decide to go 4-5-1, in that I think I'd probably start with Chicharito.

Have you lot just forgotten the last 3 1/2 years? I think berbatov is a wonderful footballer but he's feck all use to us away from home. We play a counter attacking game and he slows us down so badly. We played welbeck and Hernandez today be abuse of their pace and penetration. Berbatov rarely ever scores away from home for us. He just doesn't suit our style. But he's too good and too expensive to be sat on our bench. Hopefully he'll get a good move in the summer.

He was feck all use at Blackpool last season wasn't he?

You're almost answering his own point by singling out one game. In fairness I think Commadus made a great point that we weren't going start both Scholes and Giggs along with Berbatov, would have been manic for any counter attacking purposes.

Not really. It's an example. How many opportunities has he been given since?

You need to add the qualifier - Berba and Rooney were poor away from home as a pairing. This has more to do with both players not complimenting each other or the team. Berba without Rooney is a different and I would say better player and likewise for Rooney.

It's unfortunate that they never hit it off and I doubt unless there is a massive injury list whether they will play together for any prolonged period.

I though he should have been brought early second half.

But not exactly the player who will turn it around or pull the team out of it single-handedly.

We played counter-attack football today?

Our problem was that while the midfield had good control, we lost the ball almost instantly when our front men received the ball most of the time. Berbatov would have allowed us to keep the ball in the final third as well.

Manchester United to offer Dimitar Berbatov extended contract

Manchester United will take up the "one-way option" in Dimitar Berbatov's contract to extend his stay at the club for another year and to prevent him becoming a free agent in the summer. Although the clause is activated on Thursday it does not have to be executed immediately.

The clause ensures that United will not lose Berbatov in the summer for no fee, having paid Tottenham Hotspur £30m for him in the summer of 2008 when he signed on the closing day of the transfer window. He does not have the option to activate it but United intend to do so with Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, stating at the end of December: "We'll be exercising [the option to renew]," said the United manager. "I think it kicks in in March."

Berbatov earns around £100,000 a week at Old Trafford and it is not thought he will receive an increase when his deal is extended. Following an impressive start to his career at United the Bulgarian is now down the pecking order and arguably fourth-choice behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernández. Berbatov has scored 49 goals in 82 league starts for the club.

Wow, didn't realise this  I know there's the argument about the quality of teams he's started against the last couple of years, but that's impressive.

And yes, I expect this is being executed to gain a fee for him in the summer :(

It's a nothing story anyway. The only way we wouldn't activate that clause is if he was a complete crock.

Two Reasons:

1. If we want to keep him we get another year on his contract with no negotiations.
2. If we want to sell him it adds to his value and avoids a Bosman situation.

Complete nothing story.
