Paul Pogba

I dunno. It's unusual for Sir Alex to say 'first team member'. Most people would have said squad. I don't think tonight's game has much significance for Thursday other then he needs games. He needs to get back playing.

From the devilish extreme to another.

You must have been completely taken aback when Fergie signed Young, Smalling and Jones in the summer. What with your perennial opinion that we never need to sign anyone ever.

I would be very concerned, for very different reasons, if Fergie went into next season with Giggs, Anderson and Jones as three of our five best central midfielders.

Thats the type of attitude I was criticizing in the first place. We've seen Pogba turning from 'the reason why we haven't spend money on a midfielder' to 'just a reserve' in few months and I wont be surprised if the mentality will revert IF he signs his contract with us.

In my opinion he's neither one nor the other. He's got more potential to be relegated to the De Laet or Owen type of player but he certainly havent shown enough to become some sort of reason of why not investing in a CM that is starving for quality. Not to forget that the Spanish has changed football. Their workrate, their class with the ball and their constant pressing have made players who rely mainly on hardwork, passion and workrate redundant. A player who can't hold the ball and pass it well even under constant pressure will struggle at the highest level. That's the bar set by the Liga and that's what we should aim for if we want to beat the Spanish guys and reclaim the CL trophy.

I can't believe he's still being compared to Vieira. He's much more like a Yaya Toure.

I think he's very similar to Christian Eriksen to be honest. I know, both are youngsters, but unfortunatly I feel that many of our fans might've seen Eriksen more then they've seen Pogba.

Why is that ridiculous?

Because of the options, injuries, age, diseases, and depth in our current midfield maybe?

What exactly is your reason for not going and signing say ... Javi Martinez, and keeping our midfield exactly like it is. You don't think he'd improve it?

So he's an ACM? His position was all over when he came on.

hes more of an adventurous centre midfielder really, think luka modric.

Likes to get forward and join the box, but will come deep to recieve the ball and start off play like scholesy.

From descriptions on here he sounds like a mix of all of the worlds best midfielders...

I mean he is not very similar to Yaya.

Really? Keeps possession well, gangly but strong, eye for a pass, plays in an advanced role, good shot on him. In what ways isn't he similar to Yaya?

I think he plays a bit deeper than Eriksen, but definitely he is more playmaker than destroyer. I think his size is deceptive - he's not particularly combative nor does he sprint all over the shop. He's a very elegant footballer. If anything I'd like to see him get 'in the wars' a bit more when we don't have the ball.

Too early trying to compare him with other midfielders, he's nowhere near as complete as any established midfielders. If you forced me to pick though I'd say he's similar in a way to Charlie Adam. *braces himself

Is that not American football?

lol..why not. Charlie Adam it is :)

What? He's nothing like Eriksen.

Pogba agreed to a deal according to Sky Sports.

Sky Sports understands teenage midfielder Paul Pogba has agreed to sign a new contract to stay at Manchester United.

Pogba's future at Old Trafford was uncertain as he was due to be out of contract at the end of the season and had been heavily linked with a move to Juventus.
The 18-year-old's situation was recently described as 'precarious' by his agent and speculation had suggested Pogba was set to leave United.

His omission from the squad for the recent Europa League home defeats by Ajax and Athletic Bilbao only prompted further doubts over his future.

However, Pogba was back in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for Sunday's game against West Bromwich Albion and he appeared as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win.

Speaking after the victory which sent United to the top of the Premier League table, Ferguson confirmed Pogba was still making up his mind regarding a contract.

It is now understood that Pogba has elected to continue his career with the reigning champions and has agreed terms with the club.

Pogba has made five substitute appearances for the Red Devils this season after making his debut against Leeds United in the Carling Cup.

We don't need to, I mean we can play the 16 year old youth team players in midfield if we had too.

But we realistically should.

Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs, Jones, Scholes, Fletcher.

I see no 16-year olds among them.

What? He's nothing like Eriksen.

Really? From what I've seen of Eriksen, both of them seems to be at their best in the attacking third, always creating space for themselves and looking for a killer pass. While Pogba might have the physical advantage, and Eriksen perhaps being more of a footballing brain at the moment, I think both of them have a lot of similarities.

I have no idea, as to my knowledge I have never seen Javi Martinez play a game of football.

Id say he's far more technically skilled especially in the shooting department than Yaya. His natural position is probably a little further up the pitch than him as well.

Nate Dogg posted this in the 'best young player' thread.

If he stays then gotta be Pogba, if not then De Gea for me.

With all the amazing young players we have, Smalling, Chicharito, Welbeck, Jones, Evans, De Gea, Cleverley and Rafael, someone pics Pogba over all of them? I love Pogba too, but I don't see how anyone could rate him as our best youngster when he's barely gotten a game for the first team. You can only learn so much from watching a player in the reserves.

Fair play to raiola. The fat greasy cnut has played us like a fiddle.

Or United stood their ground and Pogba ultimately decided he'd rather be at United than at some Italian club. None of us really know the details, but I don't get why people are just assuming that United are the ones who bend over. Much more plausible that all parties reached an agreement that they're all content with.

As much as I hate to label young midfielders Eriksen is pretty much an attacking midfielder only. His defensive qualities are very limited, but his creativity, vision and off the ball-movement are all very good. Pogba is a much more all-around midfielder as I see it.

In caf-phrases this would be: I don't think Eriksen can play central midfielder in a 4-4-2, but I think Pogba can.

Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs, Jones, Scholes, Fletcher

We've talked about it on a different thread, you can look it up. I fully agree we have enough midfielders - and possibly quality - in theory. In reality, Giggs and Scholes are kind of part timers, we've no idea if Fletcher will come back (or how), and Anderson is always good for an injury (let's say the jury is out about Cleverley at this point). So when you look at that, it much less impressive.

Agree re. Giggs and Scholes, call them two 1 squad player.

Re. Anderson, he either has to prove he can be relied on in terms of fitness soon, otherwise it is no point having him around. But as long as he is around, he is taking up a squad place + need games if to progress.

Re. Fletcher, as long as there's hope of returning, he deserves that chance.

Carrick is an obvious choice.

The younger players need games to develop.

No point keeping Giggs and Scholes around if not being played.

Basically, IMO, there is no space for an expensive, well-established midfielder, unless there's a couple of departures.
