Can we finally agree that he has no required quality to play as a lone striker?

He can definately play there but it's not his best position, limits the impact he can have on the game too much, we need him involved as much as possible. If he was playing deeper we'd have kept possession better tonight, no doubt.

Heavy touch, and God knows how many times he fell over...BUT, still got his goal - and a good one at that.

Love that...regardless of how he is playing overall, he has still been getting the goals this season, 27 in 32 matches now. Now if he can just up his all-round game to what it was a couple of seasons ago, we'll have what we always dreamed of.

A complete Rooney - Goal scorer AND creator.

Just a random musing - I wonder how many goals Rooney set up for Ronaldo in their time together. Since Ronaldo left, his assist numbers have fallen precipitously. Is it because, the others simply aren't as clinical as Ronaldo was?

He's in one of his famous purple patches...

hope it last till the end of the season because the goal glut is usually followed by one of his extended slumps. (although given the number of times he's scored this season that might not happen this time around)

He's the only one scoring for us too, so that's a bit of a worry. (tbf Young has done well in the league)

27 goals in 32 matches, 20 in 24 in the league, has to be his best goals to game ratio for us. The maximum amount of games he can play for us will be two less than the amount he played in his 34 goal season.

Obviously having a goalscorer as prolific as Ronaldo will help, but he got 13 last season which was 1 more than he had in Ronaldo's last season and his highest assist record was 14. Hard to explain quite why he's not been getting as many assists as last season. Chicharito's been a bit off-form and Welbeck's still too unselfish and wasteful in front of goal so he's not really had a chance to have that kind of creator-goalscorer dynamic that he had last year with Chicharito and previously with Ronaldo, so he's taken it upon himself to score more.

Is that why he scored 34 goals 2 seasons ago playing as lone striker? Rooney is a star player in our team and is expected to perform but when a team plays football like that no ONE player can win it single handedly against the flow of the game( Ath.Club's game).

So stop trying to judge where a player can and cannot play by a match where the opponents were a footballing masterclass.

It should be remembered that 22 (or just under 2/3) of his goals that season came from playing alongside another striker, generally Berbatov. It's another myth that's being perpetuated alongside it being the one season where he's been consistent throughout. In this case it's because he had a couple of highlight performances in the CL v Milan, scored a hat-trick v Portsmouth, excelled against City in the CC and took apart Arsenal as he often does. Over half of his goals up front on his own came in 3 games.

That's not to say he can't play the role, he certainly can to very good effect.

Who else in world football can play cross field passes as good as Scholes while having great heading ability and deadly predatory strikers' instinct in the box?

Incredible player.

Rooney's really hit form at the PERFECT time for Utd.

The way things are going he could be a big difference in the two sides competing for the title.

Stunning goal at in Bilbao too!

Sky are obsessed with giving him MOTM in every game, he was good but Scholes, Hernandez, Evans and Valencia in particular were miles above him.

That is as retarded as it gets. He looked a different class today

His touch, possesion, passing and link up play was outstanding

HE was poor in first half, but he was great in second. He misplaced at least 4 or 5 simple short passes that could be clear goalscoring chances.
Valencia was better, Evans was better, hernandez gets a nod too. Scholes ran the whole show, rooney did it just in second half. Good game overall, but not MOTM.

edit: Forgot to mention Welbeck, he was good today too, and nothing less important than Rooney was today.

It is amazing how fans can watch same game and have such a different view on certain aspects.

Rooney was very sloppy in the opening 10 mins, but after that he was faultless. Some of his long passes were out of this world

Some of Rooney's passes are probably forgotten because they weren't finished. His bursting run through the middle and pass to Welbeck where he was through and missed. His vision and passing was just brilliant though and always making himself available.

I dont care he got MOTM. Having him, valencia, scholes all having stormers at the right end of the field with carrick and evans also playing brilliantly is a bonus.

If we keep him fit, I dont see any reason why we wont retain the title.

Yup, 10-15 minutes, sloppy as hell, and looked a bit frustrated, angry even. But after that, just about perfect. Shame he didn't get a goal - but he's probably saving it for when it matters!

The major positive he brings is that he drives the team forward with his runs and all round play where no one in the squad can really offer (maybe Antonio Valencia can). It can be such a great galvanise effect and influence on his team-mates around him

Best player on the pitch for me. Reminded me of the Bulgaria game, ran the show in a similar fashion.

I'm shocked at just how many people omitted him in the motm thread. I mean, I wouldn't begrudge anyone if they voted Valencia ahead of him, but he's not even in the top 3 for some people. Not just some people, quite a lot of people. Madness.

I understand being a sky contrarian is very fashionable but don't take a complete leave of your senses.

Hmm, Nani, Welbeck? Even Anderson when on form.

I thought he was a bit of rubbish today, sorry I've completely lost my senses.

His passing at times was off, heavy touches and his general demeanor was not his normal self, especially when we were leading so handily.

He was disappointed a couple of times when we had good breaks on but someone would put in a poor final ball. He's not wrong to be a bit annoyed considering goal difference could play a major role in deciding where the title ends up .

Amazing player...massive contribution which can be sometimes overlooked on here...a delight to watch.

A decent gesture from our Wayne here...

Rooney sorry for boy's injury
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has apologised to a nine-year-old fan after his stray shot broke the youngster's wrist.

Jamie Thomas, from Wem in Shropshire, was watching United for the first time on Sunday when the shot from the striker caught his arm.

Rooney used his Twitter page to say sorry to the schoolboy and promised to send him a personalised gift.

He said in a tweet: "I want to apologise to Jamie Thomas. I have arranged for a letter and a signed shirt to be sent to his home address."

It is not thought he was aware of the incident at the time.

Jamie's father, Andy, said the injury happened when his son tried to block Rooney's shot in the warm-up before United's game with Wolves at Molineux at the weekend.

Mr Thomas said Rooney and fellow striker Javier Hernandez were taking a few shots when Rooney missed one and it came straight towards Jamie.

He put out his hands to stop it hitting him and it broke his wrist.

Mr Thomas told the Shropshire Star: "It shook him up a bit but he's fine about it now and I don't think it's put him off going to other games.

"I don't think Rooney realised what he had done, otherwise I am sure he would have come over."

Ouch...
