Saviola
Davids
Flamini
Larsson
Cambiasso

Saviola ran down his contract in order to keep picking up his massive wages even though Barcelona were actively trying to get rid of him. Flamini was regarded as a shite player and Arsenal could not get rid of him in 2007 before he had a great season; not even comparable to the Kagawa situation.

Larsson was 33, at that age free transfers are more likely to happen; Cambiasso? Real Madrid are the stupidest club ever.

Just read about this being a done deal.
Fantastic :D
Just a fullback more and we'd be good to go.

You don't have to be a multi skilled superstar to be very effective. I sometimes watch Antonio Valencia and scream at him for not using his left foot, however he is one of the most effective wingers in the premiership, if not europe on his day. For all Nani's superior skill, it's still a toss up over who I'd prefer to have in the team on any given day.

Effective for a winger is one thing but an effective CAM is another...Being good with both feet means he can't be neutralized very easily or shepherded to the weaker foot...Defenders will have to either give space or be beaten, Kagawa won't win all those encounters but he will win many...and goals will come

Just watched all Hazard's goals and assists from last season, and compared it to Kagawa's.

From 20 Hazard's Goals, 8 were from the spot. (Kagawa 13 goals, 0 from the spot)

From his 15 assists, 6 were from set pieces (Kagawa 11 assists, 0 from set pieces)

Also, Hazard played 38 matches in the French league, Kagawa played 31 match in Bundesliga.

I think we maybe got a better player.

Yeah, I think Kagawa's relative anonymity of being an Asian player who no one knew about a couple of years ago, has worked in our favor. If he was European, the price would have probably been at least double what its reported as now.

Call me cynical and it's probably bordering on positive racism by the club if it use the case but I do hope we let Park go now. He had a really poor season and at 31 we can't expect him to get any better. With Kagawa giving us the commercial interest in the far east he really doesn't add anything to the team.

Fantastic servant to us and I wish him all the best.

I was actually agreeing with you. Hazard is supposedly the more talented player, but it's not necessarily the more talented players that are the most effective for the team.

Hmm, not overly similar players, and Kagawa is quite frankly, better.

Good passing, being able to play the ball through, keeps the balling moving, no long balls? Better? Time will tell. Cleverlys younger and still inexperienced.

Atm I'd actually rate kagawa higher than hazard, but I have only watched kagawa quite a lot for Dortmund and not so hazard. Hazard though from what I've seen has the bigger potential. Let's wait and see how they develop but feck me kagawa would be a great signing

I don't think that's positive racism, I think that's just traditional old genuine racism.

"Who needs the Korean? He's shit anyway and now we've got a Jap!"

We have a player who has said he wants to retire here. I say we keep him. Give him a chance to regain his form a bit, and if not we just use him sparingly as an experienced head in Carling Cup games. On the wing, I should add.

I take it you haven't watched kagawa ever then? He is better than clev and clev is 23 as well no?

By a total of 5 months.

At the moment Cleverley has to prove that his body is up to the rigours of top level football. Kagawa, on the other hand, has been performing consistently in Germany's best team for two years. Right now he's obviously a better player, not an "alternative" to Cleverley.

I misunderstood then...I thought you were suggesting being two footed is not necessarily an advantage

Your last bit is absolutely true and I think most fans understand that...Although, emotionally, it can be hard to accept when you see individual talents choose elsewhere...I'm quite sure United fans are going to love Kagawa

The two things clearly aren't related. If we want to let Park go, then that won't be decided by us buying in another player from the far east. I'm sure if we do not buy another player from there in the next 5 years, we won't just keep Park because he's a marketing asset. We could buy a someone from Scotland and be in a position to let Park go, and that won't be because we want to suddenly match up the commercial interest from Scotland, to that of the far east.

well he's 22 :p

I said from the vids Godfather...But lets wait and see what he does in our shirt? How about that? We've bigged players up before and they've not lived up to the billing.

Not saying this lad won't, but personally I don't care what he did in Germany per say - it's what he does for us in England that will say if he's a good player or not

Think JOS want to retire here too, the squad rules now make that more difficult. Park has lost his best attribute (his 3rd) lung and considering his age I can't see him regaining it.

No. He didn't get much of a look in this season for whatever reason, yet despite his rustiness he was still given the nod for a big game at the end of the season and was (in my opinion) unfairly criticised for it. He could still be a useful player.

It's probably down the back of the sofa

Kicker ie the source that said Martinez to Bayern last week?

I think that's actually still on the table afaik and Kicker is usually not into gossip talk at all.

Sky News Germany still reports that Bayern is very interested in signing Martinez as a partner for Schweinsteiger and an alternative for their defense if need be.

But as has been mentioned many times before Bilbao players are hard to get.

He is used mainly on the left by Zaccheroni in the Japan national team setup. So, he could be useful in that position.

Fair enough :D

Nah sorry man but Kagawa has proven himself as a better player, and I don't think Cleverley is as talented as him therefore won't go on to be better. The age thing makes no difference seeing as he's a year younger.

Kagawa also has one thing Cleverley doesn't, quite an important thing, goals.

Players as highly rated/sought after as Kagawa don't run their contracts down. Dortmund would never have let it happen. From the moment he refused to sign a new contract it was a case of who he signs for this summer not whether or not he stays. I hope he ends up at United but if we can't cut a deal he'll end up somewhere like Arsenal.

It's a bit like Ashley Young actually. He was too good a player to try and quietly run his contract down, so it wasn't difficult for the selling club to kick off an auction. It's actually incredibly rare for players to run their contracts down, unless they're at the very end of their career. Chamakh and Squillacci are the only players I can think of who joined a CL club in that manner and they're both shit.

Dortmund wouldn't have much choice if he didn't want to move. I appreciate that United will want to get a player they think they need without taking the risk and that's fine - my point was that the poster i responded to seemed to was banging on about "value" as if this is a great deal.

United could be paying up to £20 million for a player who would have cost nothing next summer, or a damn sight less in january is all I'm saying.

Please no. Don't do this to us. The prospect of having an actual attacking midfielder who could make a three-man midfield WORK made me giddy, I don't want to lose that feeling.

Cleverley can play in a deeper role.

------Carrick-----Cleverley----
----------Kagawa-------------
Valenica----Rooney-------Nani

Nice pit of pace in that setup.

Ashley Young,Welbeck,Hernandez on the bench also have pace to burn. I can see us doing a few teams on the counter attack away from home in spectacular fashion.

I think the Kagawa deal will definitely be done in the summer. Dortmund know that he want's to leave and that he won't be signing a new contract. Gill and Fergie will make it plain that they won't pay over the odds for a player that will run down his contract.

On the flip side Dortmund also know that we need a midfield playmaker and will try to squeeze out another couple of mill. There will be a halfway compromise of sorts and Kagawa will sign in the next couple of weeks methinks.

I don't know how you people live like this... hanging off every word in tweets and speculative articles.

Fair as in he is worth it as a player, and it is in line with the fees of the likes of Nasri and Young. It still is a bit of a stupid situation that a player with one year left on his contract can cost such a high figure

Both Nasri and Young had one year left on their contracts, so it's actually perfectly in line with the market.

That's unfair on Cleverley. He's a real goal threat.

The one really big advantage Kagawa has had over Cleverley this last season was managing not to get a serious long-term injury.

In fact, Cleverley's bad luck with injuries has really hindered his development ever since he won Watford's player of the season (11 goals in 33 appearances) If he can catch a break with injuries (no pun intended) I can see him and Kagawa link up for United in the same way that Kagawa and Gotze did for Dortmund (or Cleverley and Lansbury did at Watford). It's quite an exciting prospect tbh.
