That wasn't my point at all, I was saying that just because we are the only club in for a player doesn't mean that the player lacks quality as per the point I was addressing in the quote suggesting that because no one else seems to be seriously in for Kagawa then that means he lacks the requisite quality to make a difference.
And - how do we know noone was interested in Kagawa ? He may have turned down several big clubs by saying "I will only move to England"
I think Fergie will plan to use Kagawa in a variety of different positions. English teams are in a different situation to continental teams in that the style of play we face in the domestic league requires a very different approach to that which we will face in Europe. We need players who have the attributes to be able to play in different roles in different systems and Kagawa fits the bill.
In the 4-2-3-1 we usually play (2 midfielders, 2 wingers, 1 forward dropping deep off the frontman) Kagawa could play anywhere in that 3, much in the same way that Mata has for Chelsea since Di Matteo came in and changed to that formation. Squad rotation will assure everyone gets games and his ability to roam from a central position or to come inside off either flank makes him very useful as a starter and as an option off the bench.
In European games and big domestic games where we might want to be a bit cagier and use 4-3-3 I can see him being used as the most offensively-minded of the midfield 3 (or on the flanks of the front 3 if our designated wingers are out). In those games where we sit back I think a player like Kagawa who could receive the ball in our own half and burst forward quickly past a player or two at speed before picking a forward pass would be a huge boost to our counter-attacking play.

We might not be the only big club interested but if we are then it doesn't mean he isn't a quality player which is what my original point was.
If other clubs are in and it looks like he is choosing us then maybe we aren't as unattractive an option in comparison to other clubs as we are being made out to be.

Can't help but thinking people are hyping Kagawa to unrealistic levels - from what I've seen, he looks a good player and I think he'll be a good signing but from some of the comments on here you'd think we were getting Messi.
It's all snippets, but he really does seem to see a pass that nobody else does.

Me too. Certainly people are excited at getting a creative central player cos we've looked short of one for awhile now. Haven't seen anyone talking about Shinji like his surnama is Kagawadona though.

No it's not, I'm not reacting as if we're signing Messi, I'm reacting as if we're signing a way better player than Messi, dummy.
Quite the opposite, people are saying this is an astute signing. A player who clearly has quality and will only improve when he gets here. As far as signings to this reminds me a lot of the Valencia signing.
I think its more the excitement that we're signing a creative type midfielder which we've been aching for.
But I don't think anyone is hyping him up to 'Messi-like' levels. On the contrary I think this is as low pressure as signings come - I mean the fees quoted aren't astronomical, the whole process has been low-key (compared to the circus theatrics of the Hazard saga), and he's not looking to fill in a specific void left by a player. The only pressure I can imagine being applied to him is if he inherits the no.7 shirt, but again I think Fergie played a blinder by downplaying its significance by giving it to Owen.
Essentially we're getting a tidy, versatile and hardworking player who was integral to a major European side's back to back league wins, and someone who's seen as a superstar for his country. All for a relatively low transfer fee in today's crazy inflated market.

The Messi thing was an exaggerated joke - I do however think people are expecting more than we'll get.
I'm predicting a good start, a lull around mid season and a strong finish and for him to be fantastic and an integral part of the side in 13/14.
watched the whole Oman v Japan game and they look for him to create things all the time and the majority of the time he did deliver, He looked very comfortable on the ball and can certainly pick a player out ,what I did like though was the way he changed the way he played during the game ,one minute he goes on a run, the next a simple pass its very hard to actually see what he was going to do next, In a word unpredictable and thats why i think he will fit in very nicely at United and Premier league football is made for him in my opinion, I have watched the games he has played since I found out United were interested and he has impressed me in every one and i am very sceptical when i watch players, Against Oman he was good but then you have to look at the opposition ,but against Bayern he was very good he was the reason they tore bayern apart at times,no mean feat against the best defence in the bundesliga they scored 5 against a team that had only conceded 22

Redkoas, think Izzydiggler is on about people on here getting spastically excited, not the media. We all know the papers generally go silly based on a players price tag, ie. Hazard, Sanchez, Benzema and all those other hyped up players we've been in for in the past.

He sort of glides with the ball like Silva. Can look very classy. Silva is definitely better at keeping the ball but like you say, Kagawa has very good end product and of course he's younger by about 3 years so he's likely to develop more over time.
