Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Apparently he's told Marca this.

"Here I am no longer able to fulfil my dream," Modric told Spanish newspaper Marca. "I'm going to play in the Champions League - I want to win this competition."

Modric or no Modric I can't see why we're not interesed in Sahin. I remember watching how brilliant how he was at Dortmund and how gutted he was when he made the move to General Franco's mob.

I think you are confusing you and Sahin

He's young, covers the positions we're solely lacking in and probably won't cost a fortune either. We could also take up Madrid's loan offer - at the very least it'll also give us a chance to determine whether Anderson and Cleverley are good enough to make the step up too.

 What loan offer? Where did you get that from? That would not be a bad call at all, but doubt it is realistic.

It was reported in Spain that we were offered Sahin on loan in January, basically because he wasn't going to get enough game time at Madrid to recover his match fitness last year. I guess Scholes coming back meant that we weren't interested.

There were rumours that Madrid were looking for a loan deal for him for this season as well but there's nothing solid to back those rumours up.

You'll get no arguments from me on that one. He was the one i wanted last summer, but Madrid got in there first. If he is available it should be a no brainer. He would cover everything we need in midfield, and could be another Madrid reject type bargain.

Exactly, knowing Real, they'l sell him for cheap too. Add to that Mourinho's respect and relationship with Sir Alex and the deal could be done if we made an effort.

It appears that we draw up a list of 3 targets for each position and we rigidly stick to that list. There is nothing to suggest that Sahin is on that list.

I think that the following were on our list for this year

Midfield

Modric
Alcantara
Rodriguez/?

No10/Winger

Kagawa
Hazard
Rodriguez

Left Back

Alba
Baines
?

Tbh, i never really pay much attention to who are targets are according to the papers. So we could be in for a player and the media wouldnt know about it. But i do agree that at times, we tend to be too rigid in terms of what we'd buy and tend not to do any business if we dont get our 1st couple of choices even if the need is there.

Even if Madrid are mad enough for that money plus player swap deal for Modric, why would Sahin want to leave Real for Tottenham?

If Madrid have no use for him, I'm sure there'll be plenty of top clubs interested, that could offer CL and more money.

Swap deals are very rare as it is. If they want Modric, they'l pay whatever Spurs want. Whether Sahin wants to move or stay on and warm the bench will be left upto him.

Unless desperate, or there's a buy clause, I don't see us, or any top club, being interested in loans. You're just developing a player for another club, and if he excels, they get the reward.

I think our name came up on the January loan idea because Fletcher, Cleverley and Anderson were injured. Hence a short term fix for both teams. For a season long loan I'd agree it's difficult, there would need to be a buyout figure set as well.

In this case though it makes sense. Spurs apparently value Modric at 50M euros. That of course would be what they tell us, to Madrid it is more like "40M and he is all yours".

40M is an awful lot of money and apparently it is Spurs themselves who turned it into 25M+Sahin+Carvalho. Carvalho since dropping from the equation despite probably being a very sensible swap for all involved.

For Spurs it's a good deal, for the moneymen at Madrid it is a good deal (as Sahin hasn't played much due to injuries) and the sticking point is the Jose stating he wants to keep that option and the moneymen should just pay more.

That's where I think swap deals peddled by the media don't come to fruition: they are bargaining chips from negotiators to limit expenditure but either the player is shit (not any use as a bargaining chip) or pretty good (and then the manager tells his own people to bugger off and/or overvalues them taking it all back to cash).

I'm not saying it doesn't make sense. In fact most swop deals in the press make sense. Swaps very rarely happen though and I suspect there'll be no swoop here either...

Maybe I am just a bit thick...

Why would Modric want Madrid... ?

Khedira and Alonso have the 2 CM spots locked. Sahin is a sub and a brilliant player himself. Is Modric thinking of playing on the one flank as Ozil and Ronaldo are also both locked in starters. I mean I just do not get this rumor... :wenger:.

Or rather why would Madrid want Modric? It's almost utterly pointless to spend 30m on a player you don't need

Not sure Khedira has it "locked" though jojojo would have to confirm this. He definately improved as the season progressed and hasnt hit top form but this is Real Madrid, they just might not be willing to wait.

The rationale being banged on about lately is that of a player they don't exactly need but who would be a great squad addition (not miles from many on here saying adding someone of his proven quality is more important than a Carrick backup, no matter how many other midfielders we have for the other CM role).

Essentially:

  • Easier games: alongside Alonso, no Khedira who isn't convincing in his overall play.
  • When Alonso is not available: better alternative than anything they have.
  • When one of the wingers/inside forwards are out: better alternative than anything they have, particularly as they want rid of Kaká
So mostly along the lines of "if we get rid of Gago and Kaká, and consider Sahin as unproven (a bit like Clev/Ando), adding Modric to the squad has us sorted in multiple ways". Reasonable, but not 40M worth, which is where the 25M+player sounds more plausible.

One interesting thing: Madrid fans think at 26 he is young and will pay back over many years, while we point out he will be 27 soon and won't pay over the odds for that age profile.

it's more of gill/fergie pointing that out and the fans following suit. Madrid and Barca do not care about 'resale value'. They buy a player because they are the bollocks and/or have a high profile no matter their age.

Yep, with the way Real and Barca dominate other teams, an Alonso Modric CM pairing would be enough defensively and make them even more potent going forward.

Indeed, I just found it funny when I read three people in a row raving about him being young

He looked completely out of the radar a couple of weeks back but suddenly it is turning into the Madrid version of our "without Carrick (Alonso) we are screwed".

While here people argue what is the point in spending a lot of money on a Carrick backup, us not needing destroyers, etc. over there they are saying "he can backup Alonso and while not needed for that can back up Ozil/Di María or replace Khedira in easy games with Alonso doing the basic defending side needed".

A 40M top class attacking O'Shea basically.

Unlike United, Real do not exist to make profits so they are unrestrained in the transfer market. They will buy a player if he is just a 1% upgrade on what they already have. Its a fantastic position to be in.

One thing that was evident from the Euros is just how many top draw players Real have on there books. I am most envious.

Envious... where's your pride? Madrid are a club with zero class! You don't know what you got (ungrateful), try being a fan of 99% of other clubs out there for a while, it'd be a good education for you.

You'd sell your soul for glory wouldn't you, I seriously don't know how you haven't started supporting City yet, they seem to do things the way you like things to be done.

Silly question, he's a right back who can no longer run and a centre back who can't head a ball. It makes no sense to keep him.

They aren't exactly swimming in CB options though Phelan.

Kaboul
Gallas - 34
Dawson - injury prone
Bassong - not good enough for Wolves

Unless they're have a massive influx of new players it seems a bit rash to sell him.

We also have Caulker and Vertonghen will be signing. Bassong will be sold and perhaps Gallas won't have his contract extended.

That leaves us with Kaboul + Vertonghen as first choice, and Dawson + Caulker as backup, with King as bonus cover. That'll be plenty good enough.

I thought There was a rumor of King retiring, is that bullshit? Ah yes Caulker keep getting him and Corluka mixed up.

Was hoping for white text .

Sweet Jesus.

United should get in there with a bid for Sahin; the player will prefer us to Spurs, and if Real Madrid don't want to go above a certain level, this would give them the funds needed to go for Modric. He's in the zone on the age-price graph where United generally do their business.

I've just given the Sportsmail Reporter an idea for an 'EXCLUSIVE', haven't I?

The sticking point being that Mourinho doesn't want him to leave.

He just won the league, he will have it his way.

How much more potent do they need to be going forward? They've been smashing in goals for fun.
