Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Alonso and Khedira were huge for Real, in a season where they shocked many people by overcoming Barca in La Liga. But in typical Real fashion even that's no enough to keep your place.

I wonder if Mourinho has any plans to let Khedira leave, knowing him he'll manage to convince him to stick around and play a part in the rotation of the squad, while Modric plays the big games.

Or he could try and play all 3 in "big" games? Certainly would have helped combatting Bayerns midfield last season.

Wow 36m pounds?! Finally this saga is coming to an end. This one lasted longer than the Fabregas saga?

Was midfield the problem last year? For me it looked more like a vulnerability from quality balls into the box that cost them. If we look at the first leg in Munich, Madrid were doing very well until Lahm threw caution to the wind in the last 10 mins, and put some real quality balls into Gomez.

I think Madrid are really strong everywhere except defence. They are not weak there by any means, but i would say that is the one area of their team that could be improved the most.

How exactly is he going to fit in all three? I doubt he is only going to play three defenders and is he going to bench Ozil in big games. Is Modric going to play behind the striker?

Casillas

Arbeloa - Ramos - Pepe - Marcelo

Modric - Khedira - Alonso

Ronaldo - Benzema - Ozil

Something like this maybe? I'm not really a tactical genius so I don't know if it could work.

What will be the line up you reckon if it's true Modric is on his way then? Something like this?

Casillas

Arbeloa - Ramos - Pepe - Marcelo

Ozil - - -Alonso
Modric

Ronaldo - Benzema - Di Maria

Not defensive enough dropping Khedira? Or do you think Ozil, Alonso and Modric can't play together? Just want to hear people's opinions, as I don't have a clue.

They don't play the same position. If anything he has no confidence in either Khedira or Sahin.

It's irrelevant about the position, if Modric is bought, Mesut will sit, simple as...Mou is looking for a quicker playmaker who can also trigger chances from deep

Sahin doesn't even play so that too is off the mark

modric with alonso with ozil behind benz nd ronnie and di maria wide.

in 'big' matches, alonso and khedira just behind modric in a midfield 3.

If modric goes he'll play deeper than ozil without a doubt. I reckon it'll be modric next to alonso, with khediera being rotated in and out. I reckon they'll look to loan out sahin and either sell diarra or if he'a happy to be back up keep him. Tbh though if they get modric and are open to bids for khediera then he's perfect for us.

Then who is going to play behind the striker?

And why would Ozil play behind Modric? The latter is the deeper lying playmaker.

Then who is going to play behind the striker?

Ozil. I don't see Ozil as a sitting player. What a waste that would be of his ability to find space and influence the play across the pitch in advanced areas. It would make far more sense to me to play modric next to alonso, with Ozil given a free role in front when Madrid have the ball, but obviously getting back to make up the numbers, when they don't have the ball.

-------Modric----Alonso-----

--------------Ozil------------

Ronaldo----Benzema---Di Maria

In games requiring a more defensive approach, then Khedira next to Alonso with modric in front would make sense. In that scenario i would expect either Ozil to play wide left, instead of Di Maria, or Di Maria instead of Ozil.

-------Khedira---Alonso-----

------------Modric----------

Ronaldo-----Benzema----Ozil/Di Maria

Because I have no fecking clue what I'm doing?

I'm just trying to figure out our line up if for next season that's all. I'm not one of you Football Manager freaks, I just watch football for entertainment ;)

I dunno I can see modric as the one to be dropped in games where they feel they need more defensive strength. I think mourinho likes di maria, plus you'd be sacrificing any width from those players as ronaldo drifts and ozil will likely too if he wants to get involved.

Modric is special because he can play in central midfield and still be such a huge creative influence, while holding his own defensively. Would be a bit silly to buy him and play him elsewhere, though if anyone can do it it would be Mourinho, who turned Zanetti into a top class defensive midfielder.

Partnering Modric with another deep lying playmaker in Alonso could be very profitable. Or maybe Real won't score any more goals than they did last year and will miss Khedira's superior defense in the middle.

[edit: I see the italian term for a deep lying playmaker has been banned. Personally I use it because it's a short word, unlike deep lying playmaker.]

If Madrid do pull out of this we'll be inevitably linked again.

If the deal for Lucas falls through, maybe Fergie will renew his interest. He must have the money to be going for the likes of Lucas and Hazard in the first place. So if speculation is to be believed, we seem to be quite prepared to spend £30m on one player, the only question is which player will it be?

There is no earthly way United will stump up the cash for Modric if Madrid aren't willing to/comfortable with the deal.

It's clear we have the cash, I don't think that's the question. But he's not worth £40M and Fergie is not goinig to pay that, ever.

If Madrid cannot afford him then neither can we.

I very much doubt they can't AFFORD him, per se.

Maybe (most certainly) Levy's asking for more than Madrid reckon he's worth.

Modric will be sold in this transfer window, that much is certain. The rest is posturing.

We can still sign him tards, have faith!!

#believe

He'll be sold for slightly more than £30m to Real Madrid. It's pretty nailed on.

30m on lucas or modric? i know what i would prefer.

No, it isn't certain. If Levy doesn't receive a bid he likes, from a club that Modric is willing to sign for, then Modric will be staying.

That's always been the case and nothing has changed.

So in order for a player to change clubs a fee needs to be agreed between his current club and another club that he wishes to play for?

Thanks for that piercing insight. It's posts like that which make you such a great addition to this place.

How much longer can he be made to stay? Yes i know the dick shouldn't have signed a 6 yr deal, but still you cannot keep an unhappy player year after year. It's not good for you or for him and both will suffer from this stalemate eventually.

Levy should just except a £30m bid and have done with it imo. Spurs will still be doubling their initial outlay, after having the benefit of 3 or 4 very good years from him. I'm not saying Levy is wrong to want top dollar for him, but it is clear no-one really wants to pay £40m for a 27yr old.

Sometimes it's better to reach an agreement and accept a bit less than you want, rather than risk him refusing to play, or playing shit after which his value will drop anyway. Levy's stance was admirable last year, but to do similarly again this season is being a bit too pigheaded imo.

You miss the point: Sultan said it was "certain" that such a deal would be reached. I'm saying it isn't certain (implicitly because Spurs are not in a position where they have to sell).

So, having missed the point, is your post such a "great addition"?

He'll eventually end up at Madrid but if he doesn't, it would be nice if we went in for him. Just the sort of player we need and Fergie is a fan of his but can't really see us dealing with levy.

Still not a Real Madrid player? Damn, this Levy dude must be some stubborn fecker.

I'm just trying to figure out our line up if for next season that's all.

C. Ronaldo Benzema Özil
Modric Khedira
Alonso
Coentrao Ramos Pepe Arbeloa

In big games. Basically what you played in every El Clasico in 2010 / 2011 after la manita. Except that you won't play Pepe anymore in the middle but Modric. Your main weakness with a touchline hugging winger in Di Maria, a lazy Ronaldo and a lazy Özil last season has been your central midfield. You were outpossessed in the Bernabeu against a Bayern side with an unfit Schweinsteiger and a kid Kroos. You will play 4-3-3 in every big game from now on.
