Rio Ferdinand

John Terry is a dispicable person - of that their is no doubt but the FA have again been unable to deal with the situation. The FA seems to lurch from one calamity to the next - what is it about this institution that makes them so predisposed to making bad judgement calls?

The big problem for England is the expectations built up by the media which gets the country into a frothy mess. Each tournament the objective is to win the tournament this leads to making compromises usually short term picks based on form or experience. However the better long term startegy would be to pick a side for the current tournament that could win it possibly in 4 years time so they have time to develop a game plan and tactics rather than chopping and changing every tournament.

Finally seeing the light? He won 3rd best player in the Premier League back in 2007. I'm sure the majority opinion has always been kind towards him. Erikson on the other hand...

Took them until 2007 to realise he's the dogs bollocks that's pretty fecking delayed. No one was really complaining when he was shunted out wide for Gerrard and Lampard.

Ferdinand is the best CB I've seen in the top flight of English football. Terry really only had two very good seasons in 2005 & 2006 when he was playing behind Makelele, he's not as good as a whole crew of CBs including Campbell, Adams, McGrath, O'Leary and others.
Yeap. More importantly, has Terry ever really played that well for England? He was carried in Euros 2004 by Sol when he was supposedly at his peak

Still dont understand why they stripped Terry of the captaincy but are allowing him to play. Why go half way about it?

I still think Terrys best days were due to Carvalho and Makelele in front of him. Hes good but he was vastly overrated. Rio on the other hand has been class next to most defenders. I remember him and Silvestre being a fantastic partnership until Rio was suspended 8 months and our defence looked like shite.
Rio/Vidic obviously was beast like and Rio was probably our best play (bar Ronaldo) in 2008. And hes looked class next to Evans as well.

I do feel sorry for Rio as his international career has been a big disappointment due to injury, suspension and failure to qualify.

To be fair, that's when he became the deep lying footballer, prior to that his best spell was in 03-04, playing behind Ruud. In between he struggled with form and the eye injury thing. He should have still started in midfield, but I don't think his talents have been underappreciated at any time by a majority of the public. Personally.

I do but I think I might just hold Scholes in too high a regard and my friends are a bit thick when it comes to Football.

Have you seen the gents behind the FA? Not sure if they know how to put on their own pants or wipe their own arses. Most are so far flung from normal society it's a travesty they have their say in it.

I wish someone would introduce them to FM and tell them it's the new way of selecting English sides then lock them away in a room to play the game mindlessly. That way there's room for real footballing intellects to lead us.

"I've selected Terry! Cracking choice. I've just brought in Henderson too, he might be a bit poor at the moment, but I've seen the future and in five years he'll make an excellent captain for England. Perfect scores in physicality, tackling, and power. Not so good with passing, but that's only a small part of the game."

Cool, do we have any centre halves left or do we put Carrick and Berbatov in defence?

Michael Keane or Carrick would be up next at CB if needed, I'd guess. Evra has played there too but we don't have anyone to back him up if we move him.

We have 5 centre halves at the clubs and can't keep two of them fit.

Evra at centre half would be a disaster, when did he ever play there?

I think thats the point though - the general public only really appreciated what a great all-around footballer he was after the prolific goalscoring began to dry up. His peak as a goalscorer and his peak as a playmaker didn't really coincide, but even in his high-scoring days he was never really recognised as the superb all-around football he was.

In his prime he never really got the adulation Gerrard for instance did, but I massively doubt that Gerrard will ever demonstrate the sort of playmaking skills Scholes has as he ages.

Is Vida the only fit centre back?

Not good going into the new season and makes our lack of LB cover all the more annoying. I got no problems with the players we brought in this summer but really wish we had signed a left back or not let Fabio go. It's a massive void in the squad having only one orthodox left back.

Well after playing so much in pre-season, I was hoping Rio would go through the entire campaign without missing any football.

I guess that leaves Vida as our only fit CB, and I don't think he played 90 mins this pre-season so it could be a long night if Rio is out.

I believe it was during that injury crisis a few years back where Carrick also played some CB, or maybe it was in 2006/7 during that run where Heinze was also at CB when we beat Milan at OT but Kaka scored two? I seem to recall Heinze running into Evra and allowing Kaka to walk past them both for a goal.

Either way, I'm sure he played there a few times, Evra is my 2nd favorite player after Scholes so I always pay attention to his exploits.

How highly did you rate McGrath Pete?

I only really caught his late career renaissance with Villa and Ireland, and I was very young, but in my heart he's right up there with Baresi and Kohler as the best defenders I've ever seen.

Why could Wootton not do a job there? Surely hes our next best qualified centre back?

If true then I'd expect Evans to be rushed back - two recently-injured centre-halves better than one and our most reliable central-midfielder IMO.

Can RvP play in defence? :smirk:

Personally I rate M. Keane a bit higher but I think Wootton would be a fine choice. Considering SAFs recent history I'd guess it will be Carrick, but I wouldn't be too concerned with any of them.

Pretty sure he played cb against Wolfsburg a few years back when we had an injury crisis.

He also played cb for the 2nd half of a game last season. Don't remember the opposition but it was the game before the Blackburn game at home.

I'm hanging on to this at the moment. feck the prospect of Rio out for a month.

Rooney - Van Persie
Kagawa
Nani - Carrick - Cleverley - Valencia
Evra - Vidic - Rafael
De Gea

On a serious note though I fecking hope Rio is available. Having 4 CBs injured for the first game of the season would be simply ridiculous.
