A few players, Nani & Rooney looked rusty, hardly that surprising. Plus, Everton defended superbly.

Well, I'd play Valencia over Nani on the right every time we can (i.e. we've got fit and in-form right-back). We lose too much without Tony at RM, Nani should stick to the left cause when he finds form it's no difference to him.

Knee-jerk and all that, I admit to have been terribly gutted yesterday I don't remember the last time I was so angry after a defeat. We'll still experience many moments of magic from heavily criticised for their last show players.

Yeah that's what I didn't get, usually Nani has absolutely no problem taking his man on. In the Euros he was beating defenders for fun. But last night he just wouldn't even try, apart from once against Distin I think, where get got out-muscled.

I have to say, it's disappointing. He was great for Portugal this Summer and had a very good pre-season too. To see a performance like that from him last night is frustrating, especially as he's one of our more likely players to get dropped when playing badly. I doubt he'll even start next weekend, though I hope he does, because he's usually good when we play at OT.

But the question is, who wasn't cautious, safe and, frankly, a bit pointless in their play yesterday? Only Cleverley and Kagawa for me. And that's because that's the only way they know how to play. Everyone else seemed spend their time either dwelling or playing the simple pass. I hate to say it but that's a very very dull brand of football if it's intentionally the way we plan to play.

That's because Everton had great shape and defended brilliantly!
 
Valencia took on his man a few times in the closing moments. Rooney beat his man with that nutmeg and run into the box. There were lots of players trying to make something happen. The fact that Everton defended brilliantly and some of our best players were below par meant that nothing did.

Absurd to try and claim we were somehow deliberately playing negative, conservative football. Shows a real ignorance of the way SAF likes his teams to play.

There is what gb said, then there are some fools coming out saying they don't like our players. I've come on and criticized both of their performences, because they were woeful but hyperbole is taken to a whole new level after defeats. Nani and Rooney are obviously brilliant players, last night however they had a bad game, it happens from time to time.
 
Nani looked okay in the first half, he was more involved in our one-touch play and made himself available more often. As the game wore on, especially in the second half, that went to shit and as he tried to move out wider and deliver more crosses, they also steadily got worse. The substitution was inevitable, and justified, but it's not really a point for concern, he'll be fine. He simply had a poor game, and as United as a team became poorer, rather than step-up as we've seen so often, he like Rooney drifted further away which I think is some of the reason for all this long-term negativity we've seen. It's not often we have a game where both are so ineffective, and it showed last night what we lack what that happens.

Probably explains why I've been even harsher than usual about his performance. I only saw the second half.
 
As an aside, Nani has so many options for beating an opponent, I think this makes him ponderous/indecisive sometimes...and the momentum is lost.

I wouldn't blame you then, it was really quite bad. I was laughing by his last cross. I doubt he had any complaints himself with the substitution either, you could see it was getting to him.

Looked that way yesterday, it's almost as if he sometimes needs the receiving pass to make up his mind for him. He received so many passes to his position or just behind him, causing him to have to decide whether to run at defenders or not, which generally didn't end up as well as the few times he received the ball mid-sprint, where the option on how to beat the defender became almost instict based.
 
So, The Sun (I know), are saying he'll be axed for the weekend. Personally I think that's right. Possibly alongside Rafael he's United's most overrated player (by United fans that is). People try and put him alongside Robben calling him world class, but I'm sorry, no world class winger would be considered about being put on the bench, but there's every chance that'll happen on Saturday. And on top of this it seems he's making noises about leaving because we won't give him an improved contract. If he played near his top level regularly, then fair enough, it'd be completely warranted, but the fact is, he doesn't, and his performance on Monday was another example of that.
 
I think the frustrating thing is that Nani easily has such an abundance of talent, that he should be world class. I think his inconsistency lets him down. Since that performance in 2010 against Arsenal, till about November time last year, Nani was our star performer. He is a confidence player.

When you look at this ability, his two footedness, his skills and tricks, his acceleration, dribbling and the ability to go inside or outside his man, it's a shame he's not reaching the same levels Ronaldo could. I think the one thing that Ronaldo has is his sheer determination to be the best, and Nani maybe doesn't have that mentality.
 
Yep, that was my point. Nothing to do with the fact that Nani is far too often anonymous in matches to be considered on Robben's level.

Would we ever drop Rooney? He goes through poor spells as we all know too well, but he'll be playing regardless on Saturday, whereas this world class winger may not.

Rooney has just as much, if not more, reason to be dropped for Saturday.

And frankly, to suggest that Robben has never been anonymous in matches is ridiculous.
 
Horrible 2nd half, completely out of the game and didnt even ask for the ball. He was somewhere nowhere in the middle and didnt get the ball at all.

Needs to find his best form soon but to call him shit now is a shortsighted overreaction
 
feck me, he had an off night. Who doesn't? Some proper knee-jerking. Embarassing. Of all examples to use, Arjen Robben. Jesus. I don't even know where to start.
 
He really does deserve a new contract, whatever he wants we should give. He may have his bad moments but his good moments are just to valuable to throw away over a few extra thousand.

Quite right, Robben isn't being booed by his fans, never misses a shot, and always crosses the ball when it's better to do so.

Like when Robben was absolute dog turd at the Euro's and hauled off after an hour? That was all of 1 competitive game ago.

I'd wager that no player is in their best form in the first game of the season.
 
Thought he was poor game. Passing seemed to be his last though, ran into players most of the game. Or he would run in circles with the ball for about 10 seconds before finally deciding he needs to pass.

I'd live with that, whereas, before the Everton match, I would've thought Nani to be a sure starter for Fulham if he was available; he looked great in preseason. Especially with Kagawa.

Valencia ought to get a shot at the RW spot if Rafael is hurried back for us.

However, I think we'll see a much better United at OT; Home comforts.

That means all of our front 4 firing.

He was playing out of position and Fergie absolutely adores Valencia.

Hopefully Nani will just move to the left on Saturday but I suspect Fergie will want Kagawa, Rooney and RVP playing. If that's the case I wouldn't be at all surprised.

In all honesty if anyone deserves to be dropped it is Rooney.

Can't see it happening mind...
 
I hope he starts. He scored 2 against Fulham at OT last season didn't he?

It's the perfect game for him to assert himself, but I can see him and Welbeck being dropped for RVP and Rafael.
 
Drop Scholes and have Kagawa and Cleverley in the middle.

It'd certainly be ... interesting :)
 
Why not, go out all guns blazing. It probably wont happen, as I can see Nani being dropped to the bench too.
