Like I said the fact that he was our fourth striker obviously didn't factor in their thinking otherwise the interest would have never got off the ground. Those quotes were from Juve's CEO by the way, and if the stumbling block had been wages then I imagine he would have mentioned it. It wouldn't really reflect badly on Juventus if he had come out and said "We were interested in the player but his wage demands were unrealistic". Besides the quotes seem to imply that Berbatov made it known to him that he wanted to stay in England and that was the end of that, negotiations wouldn't have got far enough to disagree over wages.
All of which isn't that relevant considering that you're original point was that Berbatov must have struggled to find a bigger club than Fulham that wanted him, when it's clear that Fiorentina and Juve did.
We went for the likes of Owen and Larsson despite not being United material (first team level). Strength in depth is important for any club and Juventus may have seen Berba as a candidate for that if the price/salary is right.
You're giving too much weight on what Marrotta says. Owners/CEOs tend to lie alot especially in Italy. Would you like to see Galliani's statement saying that Thiago and Ibra wont be sold at any price?
I feel sorry for Berba but at his age, with his reputation, in this difficult market and after such a negative season it would have been hard for him to find a bigger club then Fulham. Things may have changed if he either accepted a massive pay cut or United allowed him to go for free.
