Serbia vs England U21 - The Incident

What sort of provocation justifies a brawl like that? Surely not just the act of kicking a ball into the stand that racially abused you.

I get the impression that they were trying to cause a riot to get us kicked out. Hopefully that cunning little plan has back fired.

You see Rose taking in deep breaths - he was clearly trying to push back his emotions. The players had been abused from before the start of the game.

They were professional throughout the game and only when they won did they celebrate - to release some pent up anger and stick it to the fans hurling abuse.

They done well dodging all the things the fans were lauching at them as well.

Serbia should be expelled from competition. Disgusting scenes.

Lovely how during all the madness the ref was able to find Rose and give him a red card for kicking a ball. UEFA should overturn it and suspend the ref for being a dick.

I heard that an English coach went after some Serbian players/coaches/fans down the tunnel. Any truth in that?

Video in here and commentary http://soccernet.espn.go.com/blog/_/name/espnfcunited/id/1107?cc=5901

Obviously racist chants do not belong in football, you won't see any normal Serb (football fan or not) deny that. As far as the racism goes that was poor and we should be fined/punished for it.

What happened afterwards was a result of England players provocation. If you dance around giving it the biggun you will expect some type of reaction - and in Serbia it will find you quickly. We don't know what happened with the coaches or players as a lot of it was off camera.. but as the coach said the England players weren't angels themselves.

As for the repercussions, if we were banned then it wouldn't surprise me.

The England players has been subjected to shit for the whole match. Not just racial abuse, but objects been thrown from cnuts in the crowd. They then go and score a winner in the last minute. Hell, I'd be shocked if they didn't give some back. These are young men remember, under 21. Add this to the fact when in a match you can make a lot of 'heat of the moment' type reactions.

I'm shocked your even questioning the England players reacting and not just condemning the disgusting behaviour of the Serbians.

I think you're giving my dear compatriots far too much credit there. What happened yesterday was anything but cunning.

Is this serious? Having watched the video, the English players seem to just be huddled together celebrating the goal when the final whistle goes, the camera cuts to Pearce shaking hands with the Serb coach, then all of a sudden it's kicking off.

What fecking provocation?!

Are you still counting there dickhead?

He might have been slightly premature with the count, but as proven in the post below - you accepted the challenge and fecking aced it.

No it wasn't. It's the result of a shit country with a shit culture. Move on with the times or build a fecking wall around your country so the rest of us don't have to deal with you.

That vuc would eventually make an arse of himself in this thread was written in the stars. It was coming like a heart attack.

And you didn't have to be clairvoyant to know that the old "it's just a minority, don't tar everyone...", chestnut would find it's way into one of his posts either.

If we were talking about just the fans then the minority argument would probably stand as well. But the Serbian players and staff were a right disgrace and they are the reason why the Serbian football team should be banned.

Comments like that are just as bad as Vuc's bullshit in this thread.

Give your head a wobble.

Serbian football ... I'm not surprised. Anyone who has been there knows about it... as a supporter of foreign clubs you're having a very hard time, and racism issues are nothing new either. Still shocking, they should be banned since the Genoa incident at latest.

And the reward for most idiotic comment in this thread goes to...

People saying stuff like this calling others racist, you couldn't make it up.

Yeah, sorry for the comment regarding the wall. Over the top of course, but I just get fed up with seeing the same countries fecking up over and over with no consequences. As already mentioned this isn't the first time Serbia is guilty of this and there has been loads of troubles in other sports as well. The fact that Vuc is trying to justify it by basically saying it was the English players fault for provoking the fans just pushed me over.

They just don't get the message and will not. Expel them now before they hurt someone. If their FA were willing to try and maybe play at a neutral situation, you could try it, but they don't get it either. Get rid.

Aye blaming the England players for provoking the fans is just a ridiculous argument.

he didnt dutifully bow down to his masser and had the temerity to challnge them on their abuse.

Being Black whilst playing football isnt an offence, serbia can feck off.

Don't see your point. I don't have a problem with any country, as long as they play nice - or rather, as long as they're not continuously being idiots.

That's just embarrassing from the Serbian FA. At least admit to what happened, to attempt to shift all the blame onto a young man who lost his head for a minute after being subjected to racial abuse is disgraceful.

If the Serbian FA can release a statement like that it shows that they need serious punishments so they can take a step back from football and sort themselves out.

The most unwholesome aspect of this thing is the astonishing amount of people who haven't even bothered to condemn racism in the wake of all this.

From everything I've read today in the Serbian press and on various message boards, geko and vuc come out looking like the moderates compared to the majority.

That's the sad part, and unfortunately this won't cause much of a tremor. Not nearly enough to even begin grappling with the problem.

Almost considering going back on the "build a fecking wall"-opinion after that Serbian FA statement. Beyond belief.

“@MirrorFootball: Serbian FA statement: "Danny Rose, behaved in inappropriate, unsportsmanlike and vulgar manner towards the supporters". Full story to follow”

That is a staggering statement. England should tell FIFA/UEFA where to stick their anti-racism campaign if they do nothing about Serbia. Blatter/Platini don't care about racism it is just a token gesture. The fact that the assault of our players and coaching staff and things being thrown should be enough for a ban never mind the obvious racism. The Serbians just don't get it that there is anything wrong with monkey chants. Morons.

Is Vuc a Serb scouser. Always the victim... it's never your fault.

Provoking the poor far right nutters in the crowd, England should face a lengthy ban.

Jesus! He must be auditioning for Sepp Blatters' job.

Agree with that. Unfortunately it's a very common strategy in similar cases, if you can call it that, which eventually leads a lot of people to believe they're the real victims of a corrupt authority. A ban and empty seats, which I think would be totally justified, are actually likely to backfire for a lot of people.

God almighty Danny Rose has said the chanting was going on before the game. What was he supposed to do, white up before he stepped on the pitch so as not to offend the poor sensitive dears. These people need to get educated. We are in the 21st century not victorian times.

Bloody hell, maybe a few who were disgusted by our 'always the victim, never your fault' chant will understand what it's for now. The Serbian FA has done an LFC but without any smoke and mirrors to hide behind. Disgraceful.

Here is the full Serbian FA statement from the Guardian,

Serbian FA denies racism and brands England's Danny Rose 'vulgar'

The Serbian Football Association have angrily denied that their fans were guilty of aiming racist abuse at the England Under-21 team, and condemned Danny Rose's behaviour as "inappropriate, unsportsmanlike and vulgar".

The win over Serbia was overshadowed by chaotic scenes at the end, with Rose, who later said the racist abuse had started in the pre-match warm-up, sent off for kicking the ball away after the final whistle.

Players and staff became involved in an angry confrontation which continued into the tunnel, while video evidence shows racist abuse continuing from the stands.

However, the Serbian FA statement, which they translated into English, denies that their fans were guilty of "any occurrences of racism", and said the controversy was isolated to the final minute of the match.

"The FA of Serbia absolutely refuses [sic] and denies that there were any occurrences of racism before and during the match at the stadium in Krusevac.

"Making connection between the seen incident – a fight between members of the two teams – and racism has absolutely no ground and we consider it to be a total malevolence.

"Unfortunately, after the fourth minute of the additional time and the victory goal scored by the guest team, unpleasant scenes were seen on the pitch.

"And while most of the English team players celebrated the score, their player number three, Danny Rose, behaved in inappropriate, unsportsmanlike and vulgar manner towards the supporters on the stands at the stadium in Krusevac, and for that he was shown a red card."

The statement maintained that the rest of the game, until the final minute, had been without incident.

"During each and every minute of the match, until the last one, a sport[ing] atmosphere, respecting fair-play [prevailed]…"

There was an apology, however, for the way Serbia players and staff confronted members of the England party.

"Football Association of Serbia apologises to the guests from England and the overall football community because of the unsportsmanlike behaviour of a part of the technical staff and players of the Serbian U-21 team.

"By this we inform the overall public that we will, as a matter of urgency, start an internal disciplinary procedure and punish the culprits after reviewing all the reports. It will be done whether a possible disciplinary procedure by the responsible Uefa bodies will be started or not.

"Furthermore, we will not either accept the fact that our players and members of the technical staff were provoked by the gesture of the English player Rose, since violence has no place at sports events. To be honest, we expect the same investigation from the English FA."

Just heard about the Serbian FA's statement, unbelievable. Do they not have PR departments over there?

They could have mitigated the consequences had they offered something [some contrition as well as practical measures], however they don't appear to be interested.

Ban them from all Internationals for the next few Tournaments. I'd be utterly ashamed to be a Serbian football fan today.

But that's the thing, I'm not sure you would. Having previous with this, it clearly doesn't bother them, it's like it's just in their mentality to think this is normal. These aren't just isolated incidents. How long before UEFA step in and say "enough is enough, you're out of the next however many tournaments"?

Well it took longer than expected, but there you go.

That for me, is an attempt at justifying what went on. "You will expect some type of reaction." Seriously? For provoking a crowd that's racially abused you for 90 minutes. What is 'some type of reaction' anyway? Booing? Fair enough. Throwing missiles though? Sparking a mass brawl? More racial abuse?

It's a baffling mentality.

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has said he should be rewarded for "reducing suffering", not accused of carrying out war crimes.

Beginning his defence at his trial in The Hague, he said he was a "tolerant man" who had sought peace in Bosnia.

Hang your head in shame my man.

It's 2012 ffs. Embarrassing.
