All players, all coaching staff, from all the professional clubs in the world - the rules are that you are not allowed to vote for your own teammates or fellow countrymen. That would give you the most balanced results.

Asking the fans on an internet vote is ridiculous, for so so many reasons.

Captain of Austria voting for Balotelli purely because he knocked Germany out of Euro 2012.

Not if Messi plays as well as he has this calendar year just gone.

Has he really played that well? Goals galore against the weaker sides and failing to make the difference in the CL (directly responsible for Barca going out) and that El Clasico.

Although the Barca lovefest would reach exponential heights online and the entire Barca squad would place 1-20 in FIFA voting.

With Suarez ranked 21st.

Why don't you let those votes simply balance themselves out?

I agree about letting the fans vote.

Redcafe and the United fans would make sure Ronaldo wins it every year.

Yes, you score 91 goals in a calendar year by 'not playing that well'.

They have more spare time than all of us.

Also fan votes are usually all over the place,

More all over the place than Benzema Rooney and Ramos getting first place votes? Or multiple ballots without Messi or Ronaldo at all?

I'm just saying we could revamp the system. The no team rule is an idea. Another would be to do something like this;

5 journalists from each federation, rotation through countries
1 ballot per continent through online vote

Maybe give previous winners a vote too

I don't have the answers but that doesn't mean the current system works.

FFS Cal? Your hatred for Messi is worse than my dislike for Ronaldo and that is saying something. Ronaldo got second place and deserved too, considering he won La Liga. However, when a player continues to score goals left, right and centre, being a team player etc, it turns heads and makes them sit up and watch. The best man won, but there is no shame in being second place. If there was any justice at all, any one of the Manchester United team could have won the Ballon D'Or for the Treble alone.

Yeah he's been pretty average really.

But seriously, let fans vote online and combine it with journalists and a couple of players. Some of these votes are just pathetic.

Are you serious? Fan voting would strip the award of any legitimacy.

The current system works well. The order of the top three is exactly right isn't it?

Yes a few Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime like Gerrard voted for completely undeserving players but overall it produced the correct result.

Eboue

I can't believe that you are suggesting that fans and journalists would be more legitimate voters, the mind boggles.

Why would we try to fix it if it is working? Messi won in the end, and Ronaldo ended up second, deservedly for both.. Why are we so concerned about sporadic votes that didn't even matter in the end or even got close to being a factor??

Just ignore my point about the biggest games in 2012.

I'd rather they have a draw with ten footballers names in a pot and the winner receives the award over letting fans vote online.

That said, I'm all for letting fans vote for FIFA elections online!

I'd agree. It does work, you can't usually argue with the overall winner most of the time. Of course it gets a bit silly when you analyse the individual voting sheet but I don't think anyone could argue with the result.

The team of the year is a nonsense though, particularly this year more than most. That's where it becomes silly and those daft votes come into effect.

Who is ignoring points? We are talking about the year in all. There have been times when Iniesta was off his game last year but he still turned it around enough to get the votes needed to be 3rd. All three deserved to be up there and only one can win. For a 4th successive time, it is Messi, and to be honest, I will avoid posting any gif that has Messi putting his shades on and states "Deal with it."

The team of the year really isn't that bad. People get really hung up on trendy players like Hummels but on the biggest stage in the UCL and Euro 2012 he didn't play well, where as Pique did.

The only player who was really robbed in the Team of the Year is Pirlo.

And the best CB of 2012 Chiellini, but yeah, just ignore him. And no Lahm to a lesser extent and a case can easily be made for Van Persie. Pirlo is the obvious one, that's just moronic considering he was as good as any midfielder in 2012.

I don't understand all the resistance to letting fans vote. It's not like I'm saying turn it over to them entirely. My proposal gave them at most 33% of the ballots. Some of these votes are just blatantly taking the piss. Do we really think Phillip Lahm or Bruno Alves spend their spare time watching Swansea-Fulham to scout out Michu?

I actually do have the unpopular opinion that Ronaldo was better for the first 6 months of the year. He was the key player in actually getting Madrid over the line in La Liga and he had a decent, if not great, Euros - certainly Portugal did more than most people expected.

However if it was borderline then, it certainly hasn't been since the restart. Madrid have been bloody awful even though Ronaldo has been the best of a bad bunch, and did particularly well against Barcelona. Messi on the other hand has been making goalscoring look easy, even when his team hasn't been playing well (teams if I include Argentina) and when they do play well he's at the heart of the play.

So a deserved 1 and 2, and in the right order. Iniesta's there because people feel guilty about not being able to give it to a twice Euros, WC winning player and everybody likes him.

The team of the year was weird though. A Barcelona/Madrid combined XI with one player who's in the waiting room for a big team? No CL finalists? No one from the PL, Italy, Germany? I like La Liga, but I really can't believe that makes sense.

Spot on.

Seriously an all La Liga team of the year. Frig sake.

La Liga doesn't prevent their matches and highlights from being viewed, correct?

La Liga is far more available to both the casual and regular fan and also seems more marketed though perhaps that's a Barca/Real standalone. Thus the likes of Casillas, Benzema, Iniesta and Xavi are far more known than say other great players like Pirlo and Sneijder (circa 2010 when he was arguably the most deserving of this award). Granted it helps a few of those Spanish players when they're winning international trophies as well.

Where were the Bayern or Borussia Dortmund Players

in argentina, is easier to watch the PL games than La Liga games

thats due to the fact that FOX sports 1, 2 and 3 and the four Espn show the PL, while la liga is only shown by ESPN

the other reason, i guess, is that la liga games are played at the same time with argentina games, and italian games, so at the same time you might watch three or four pl games while only one or two la liga games

They're not alone. Messi didn't vote for Ronaldo (only team mates) and Del Bosque only voted for Spaniards.

He didn't vote for players outside the consensus top tier of players and he didn't cop out of voting so he could have his teammate vote for him either

Well deserved I think, this award is for best player not which player won the most....

Just ignore my point about the biggest games in 2012.

C.Ronaldo failed to show up against Bayern Munich and Spain, if he had done so maybe he would be winning the award. You could argue Messi was the reason Barca even were competing with R.Madrid in the 2nd half of the season because as a team they were clearly better but Messi kept them within distance of Barca but in the end it was too much even for him.

Last season Messi had 73 goals for Barca, the next highest scorer was Alexis & Fabregas with 15. Now for R.Madrid C.Ronaldo had 60, Benzema 32 and Higuain 26. While C.Ronaldo clearly more goals his fellow strikers chipped in with almost 60 goals, Messi didn't have that support hence why R.Madrid won the league.

Indeed, had Villa hadn't been injured, then it would have been even closer to be honest. Asking Pedro, Thiago or other young players to do a mans job is asking a bit too much.
