Shinji Kagawa

I'm sure Kagawa would have a better chance lasting 90 minutes if we played him in his best position. Probably won't happen though. Good game though. Need gifs of his assist and that turn to beat the southampton player in the second. Who said he can't dribble?

Which is strange considering he was supposed to be one of the fittest players at the club when he turned up. Did better on the bleep test than anyone at the club.

He does a load of defensive work as well to be fair to him.

Imagine that Travellers him, probably only Welbeck does a comparable amount of work of our 'strikers'.

Only been able to watch the highlights. It was a really nice ball for the assist. Its that type of one touch passing that just unlocks defences. Hopefully come the end of the season the whole team will be used to him and reading of those type of balls regularly.

Well, I don't know. Then maybe people complaining about his lack of fitness are wrong. Because from all the reports we've heard is that he's extremely fit.

He made that turn 3 times tonight. Can't wait for him to be back to full fitness.

Didn't think he looked at all tired last night, surprised he came off.

He is a magnificent little player but I can´t help thinking this will turn out like Veron. Veron was also a great player but we already had Keane and Scholes and playing all three of them at the same time never quite worked out. Now we have Rooney and van Persie and Kagawa is played out of position and I fear we´ll never see his true potencial out wide but I don´t see us dropping Roon or RVP.

Good game from him. I don't think he could be blamed for the second half display when the entire team was cack. The front 4 need the midfield to be functional.

He is adjusting well to the team and the league.

Hopefully not. I hated it when Veron left us that season. He was looking good in pre-season and seemed like he finally settled into the team. Hopefully Kagawa will settle in fast, and prove that he's a fit for the team because he's a class player.

He's already starting to settle in. Plus, I'm not sure if starting positions really mean so much unless Kagawa is required to solely stay wide. Based on his performance yesterday, he definitely has license to roam. When he does, he can do things like he did yesterday for Rooney's first goal.

I'm surprised Magnus that you seem resigned to kagawa turning out like Veron. Don't think we've seen enough to really know yet.

Have we ever tried rotating Rooney or van Persie to swap with him on the left throughout a match?

If we expect him to be a touchline hugging winger and cross balls in, then his talents will be wasted. However, the last couple of games where he's played from the left, it looks like he has been given the freedom to roam about.

I think the 90 mins fitness will come as he gets used to the physicality of the PL.

With Kagawa, Rooney & RVP in the side, we should get some fluidity in the attacks so sometimes we could have Kagawa drift in-field with Rooney taking up the wide areas or RVP dropping deeper and Rooney going a bit further forward. Imo, since the Ronaldo-Tevez-Rooney side, I think our attacking play has been too rigid at times.

I think the issue comes when we are defending and who is supposed to be covering that left side. In the first half Kagawa was floating about the pitch but then was sprinting back into position to help out Evra when the opposition had the ball. It's why I don't think he'll last matches.

Hmm good point. Think ha_rooney touched on a possible solution. If Rooney doesn't mind covering for him when he does drift then we should be okay.

However, I think part of the problem is we still haven't figured out how we want to play. There were times yesterday where the team got stuck between the expansive approach and keeping it tight and short.

fergie is doing him no favours at all by playing him out wide that is why he is having a lot of average games and getting subbed.
He is best playing behind the striker like he did behind lewandowski trouble is we have four strikers.
I would like to see him given a free role and not tied down on the wing probably at the expense of welbeck

That pass was the first real sign of his Dortmund ability - their is so much more of that to come.

It reminds me of the Scholes to Giggs chipped pass a couple of seasons ago which Giggs volleyed across the keeper to the inside post. He weighted it so perfectly with a touch of back spin so it would sit just right for Giggs.

Kagawa weighted that perfectly and with a such a deft bit of spin for it to sit just right for Rooney. Can't wait to see more of it.

Yep. He was doing exactly that sort of thing week in week out for Dortmund. To be fair to him, in his few stop-start appearances with us he's been inches away from getting a few assists/goals with that sort of football. All the signs are there.

Got a feeling he'll be dropped for Giggs against Fulham, but I think it would be best to keep him playing right now, even if it is wider than he'd prefer to be.

I really hope that he starts against Fulham now, I think that he's finally starting to adjust to the team and league. SAF is showing no signs of leaving him out rather he plays good or bad though, which is promising.

He better not get injured in that Japan friendly against Latvia now, that'd be typical!

It's amazing how many players were chasing him, and he still created excellent chance.

That bottom GIF is amazing. It's great that we have another player besides Nani, RVP, Danny and Rafa, that is willing to take on their man in that manner.

I wonder if he'll eventually be able to play for a full 90 minutes? He seemed to be subbed at around the 60-70 mark at Dortmund too. In saying that, it was for the best that we took him off when we did last night.

If we want to get the best out of him, we need to play him further up. I've said before, I think his best position would be basically as a striker. Slightly deeper that the main forwards but within 10 yards or so. He is elusive and finds a lot of space, and he's very intelligent on the pitch. I think we're playing him a bit too deep and if he were to be played higher up I reckon we'd see the best.

Next season, I think we need to stop being so reliant on wingers and play a midfield 3 with Kagawa as the head of it.

He could have two solid no-nonsense CM's behind him, say Carrick and Fletcher to help keep the balance of the team and allow Kagawa freedom, and then any 3 attacking players ahead of him. Say Rooney, Van Persie and Hernandez.

Think what Kagawa could do with some freedom in the middle those 3 ahead of him.

Beautiful pass, but why is no one following up just in case the keeper spills the shot?

If I'm not mistaken, the goal was off a throw-in and we are all overloaded on one side.

It should be at least some type of hybrid. We praise United for being flexible but then when the idea comes of using a formation which isn't dependent on winger, sparks fly.

It's worth an option and we're at a period where we don't really know our best team or our best formation. Our 4-2-3-1 with wingers has worked well in the big games in the PL. Not sure how it will stand up in europe though.

I agree about the wingers but I would like to see Kagawa behind Rooney and RVP. Based on what we have now, centre three of Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson.
