Sir Ryan Giggs

I remember in the 04-05 season review he said that he enjoyed every game more because he only had three or four years left of playing, and here we are eight years later having Motm performances.

 True.

I sincerely maintain that he looks faster and fitter than he did back then.

That backheel is outrageous. He's done a ton of tricks or spectacular passes etc like that over the years but it never really gets talked about.

Remember when he hit a half volley almost inside his own half, Charlton away I think it was? Hit the crossbar and Ole put away the rebound. When you watch old season reviews, Giggs just constantly pops up with unreal bits of play. Year after year after year.

Absolutely. And you hear things like "if only Giggs had shown this kind of passing when he still had searing pace" but he absolutely did. There's loads of outstanding passes throughout his career, right from his teens. It's insane how many goals he set up directly or indirectly, and yet you have people who lived through that and still underrate him...
276 assists in 573 games? Are you having a laugh? That can not possibly be accurate. If you really believe that stat, then i can only conclude that you did not actually watch Giggs in his first 10 years.
I'll be making a Giggsy video some day with just his involvement in all our goals over the years, season-by-season, and I think people like apotheosis will be really taken aback. Even if you take away the sheer beauty of his game you have an unbelievably productive player.

id be pretty confident giggs has averaged about 12 assists a season in all competitions, so id say he comfortably has 250+ in all competitions for united. coupled with 166 goals id again say he easily has had a direct hand in over 400 united goals in his 927 games. which is amazing. not to mention the amount of goals he was involved in the build up to. impressive no matter who you are

Him and Cantona used to link up loads in his early days if my memory serves.

Yep, by far our most influential attacking partnership of the 90s and I'd say there's an argument for it being every bit as productive as anything we've seen under Sir Alex. So many outstanding interchanges between the two.

I remember when there was a lot of controversy over his European form in 96/97 and then he met Juventus and Porto and I think after that, people dropped the 'poor in Europe' comments, Giggs has been a terrifying player, but I do love the early Giggs the best, the Left wing Wizard...

I think it was Utd's form in Europe in general rather than Giggs. Also Eric (unfairly) got far more criticism over his Euro form

Thought these were trumped up stats but when you think of it - he's got 157 from 01-02 to date. 57 assists since 2008/09 season. Assuming we are more or less half way through the season, that gives him 4.5 seasons to reach 57. Over 12.6 assists per season since he turned 35.

He got 18 in 08/09:eek:

He would need roughly 12 assists/season from the time he broke into the side to the 2001/2002 season. We need stats from that period.

Agreed. I think of all the youngsters, Giggs benefited the most from playing with Cantona.

So... all the criticism he got for playing like crap a few weeks/months ago is invalidated, because he's playing well now?

Ok.

He had an average start to the season, no-one was arguing otherwise. It was the (very popular) suggestion that he was over the hill that has since been proven to be complete and utter bollocks.

Adex doesn't like Giggs much. Wouldn't hear his comments on Giggs.

Bit random. When did we say any criticsm he got a few months ago is invalid?

I think you know we didn't but just wanted to bring up the fact that a 39 year old had a poor start to the season, in order to have some sort of strange dig at Giggs.

God forbid we heap any praise on our most decorated player ever. He has had some poor runs of form, don't you know.

Bizarre.

Giggs is consistently, completely unreal. He's 39 and still playing so well. So what if it took him a little longer to get warmed up this year?

Ok.

If by "criticism" you mean "Giggs should retire now to save some dignity" then yes, it was invalidated and made look stupid now..

Just found this match highlights. I always remembered Keano bossing the midfield, but didn't remember Giggs's performance at all. Took Ashley Cole to the cleaners in the second half.

Btw watch Ashley Cole's dive at the beginning.

What a goal from JOS! Completely forgot that.

Also Giggs utterly bossed that game.

All the talented players on that pitch.....

..... and Pascal Cygan!

Rooneys Pace was lightning then

Wonderful from Giggs. A goal and two superb assists. Loved the pass to Rooney in the first half as well.

Always remember this game for Keane going at Vieira in the tunnel but as Andy Gray said "Again, Ryan Giggs' contribution... says volumes about the way this guy is playing at the moment."

Miss Highbury and the Arsenal rivalry. Giggsy scored a couple of big goals there like the end of the 2002/03 season.

One of my favorite United matches

My favourite non-final United game, fecking have 'em.

23 league seasons in a row now that Giggs has scored in.

It's a record that'll never be broken in my view, or at least not in our lifetimes.

Incredible achievement for a Footballer and it really has been a privilege watching him play as a United player.

Still can't believe some United fans wanted him to retire early on in the season when he was suffering a blip in his form.

At his best he can match Mata, Silva, Cazorla and co. in terms of passing and all-round class, IMO. Showing yet again that he's excellent in a more central role too.

I love the little pirouette he does when shielding the ball; does a little 180/270 degree turn and glides away in possession.

Fantastic footballer. An extraordinary achievement to be still playing at this level at 40 years of age.

The joke is he wasn't even playing very badly. He had like two sub-par games.
