Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

Who'll pay 50 though ?

I think they will be queuing up to be honest. Everybody from the likes of City, Chelsea, Madrid and maybe even us. Then there's the likes of PSG who will probably throw 300k a week at him.

If he's off to Spain I reckon Levy will take £50m for him.

Who will take him though? I don't see Barca going for him and after the Modric debacle I'm not sure Madrid will cough up that much. But then you never know what that lunatic Perez is up to. Would be glad if Madrid pay that much for him.

He's the exact sort of player that sparks a title challenge from a team. If Spurs can keep hold of him and make a few key signings, they'll challenge next year, I reckon. He's absolutely sublime. Best player in the league at the moment.

Do yourself a favour and have a look at who he's scored his goals against this year. The notion of him as POTY ahead of RVP is hilarious.

Of the current top 6 Suarez has scored against City, Chelsea, Everton & Arsenal so far this season

If he doesnt come here, I'd prefer him to stay at Spurs. Would be a prefect signing for City however. He'd bring the directness and pace on the wings they lack.

I don't think he should be POTY ahead of RVP, but he's still been absolutely fantastic and has been carrying his team on his shoulders. Liverpool aren't like us anymore in the way that games against small teams are meaningless; it's more challenging for them to win those games now.

Chelsea don't need him really. They need to strengthen other positions and want to reign in spending a bit.

City, maybe yeah.

Madrid he won't fit with Ronaldo there already as they both want to do exactly the same thing for mine and play on the same side. But maybe they'll bid anyway.Would be better going for a Mata mind you to play on the right.

PSG, don't see him going or them realistically paying that.

Us?

With our sponsorship deals and improvement in debt, we should have quite a bit lying around if we wanted to spend it.

That's a first team spot you don't have to worry about for 10+ years.

Levy won't sell to us for even that though. I doubt we'll pay it anyway.

This. You tell Cristiano Ronaldo to make way for Gareth feckking Bale and play at a different position and he will slap you on the face.

Madrid always wants shiny new things. I expect Ronaldo to leave & Bale to come in; all in all, he'd be a slightly less expensive CR (in view of Ronaldo's contract 'problem').

Due to the expense of an extended contract, mate. And because PSG may offer a mind-blowing fee.

Ronaldo won't leave but that wont put them off bidding for Bale. They paid 30m for Modric when they already have one of the best midfields in the world, he starts almost every game on the bench. Di Maria would be dropped and Bale will play wide while Ronaldo plays central or to the right side. They'd make it work even if they interchanged all the time.

Ronaldo--Ozil--Bale---
-------Benzema------

All 3 behind the striker are capable of playing in any of those slots, Bale or Ronaldo can move inside or Ozil can drift wide it wouldn't matter.

Yeah, true, that's another angle (selling Di Maria).

Haha they'll be the anti Barcelona. Keep shooting at every angle.

Di Maria does a lot of work compensating for Ronaldo not having to do it. With Bale there dunno, how it will work. Bale is not really that comfortable on the right.

Against top half teams this season Luis Suarez has had 13 starts, and scored five goals. Robin Van Persie on the other hand has made just 10 starts against the rest of the top half, and yet has scored nine times. Suarez has had a good season, but half his goals have come against Wigan, QPR and Norwich. Saying he's been better than RVP, or even close to him, is akin to claiming Walcott's been better than Bale.

And no one is saying Suarez is better than Van Persie. The fact is he's done an excellent job for Liverpool. They're not a top 4 team nevermind a title side so the smaller games mean a lot for them.

It's not just the Mail's journos, there was a very serious danger he'd win the Football Writer's Award purely because he's great at hammering crap teams and because he plays for plucky little Liverpool, a club with a mere 200 million quid's worth of players on their books.

Fortunately the Welsh messiah has put a stop to that and so we'll have a mere injustice with the award (like Ginola) rather than travesty (like Parker)

Didn't see any of the game tonight. Just see the gif of the goal on the other page, but I'm assuming he's had one hell of a gave overall for people to be talking like they are?

What've I missed?

He's scored 8 of Spurs' last 9 goals and over half of them have been screamers. There's only a few players in the world that could do what he's done recently. Certainly not Walcott. Part of the reason Spurs have been lacklustre going forward is because Bale's gone into uber-selfish mode, but he's winning them games on his own so in fairness why shouldn't he?

This, basically.

I see Torres' poor form has finally stopped him being up for YPOTY awards.

Yea no doubt he's in incredible form, I was only asking because I'd seen a few comments like 'after tonight....' so thought I may have missed something particularly special.

Is it best to highly rate a player because he scores screamers, or show caution because he's scoring so many screamers?

One wonders whether we are witnessing something very unsustainable or very indicative of future ability.

I'd say it's a mixture of both, weighted towards the latter.

No one in this thread has said that

Suarez winning POTY would be a 'Parker-sized' travesty?

Thanks for the giggles.

He's got more than a screamer in his locker though....

...back off and he'll unleash his long shot.

...close him down and he's explosive enough to exploit the space behind you.

I can imagine Ferguson not wanting to have to dial Levy's number again though.

Fantastic player, just a shame he's at Spurs. I'm sure if he was at any other club (apart from the top ones obviously) we'd be onto him like a fly on shit, but Levy will squeeze every penny out of us.

A lot of people who watched it don't think he did much apart from the goals. They obviously had their eyes closed for his set piece deliveries. Caulker should have scored a hat-trick from Bale corners. His delivery into the box was superb, but the fact Spurs couldn't convert (yet again, hence Bale's low assist tally) and he scored 2 great goals has meant this has gone largely unmentioned.
