Manchester United vs. Aston Villa

If Nani and Kagawa aren't two of the front four, we're guaranteed more tumescent shit.

Why can't we just put out the best XI we have instead of playing lads out of position, fail to take off these said lads when it's obvious they're struggling, and just out and play proper football for a change? It's fecking infuriating.

Christ alive. The match is 5 days away and you're moaning about the line up and performance already.

Special.

DDG
Rafael - Smalling - Evans - Evra
Carrick - Cleverley
Welbeck - RvP - Kagawa
Jones

Jones up front? Fergie seems to think he can play anywhere, so why not :D

Rafael - Vidic - Evans - Evra
---- Carrick - Cleverley ----
Valencia - Kagawa - Welbeck
----------- RVP -----------

De Gea
Rafael - Vidic - Evans - Evra
Carrick
Welbeck ------ Cleverley
Kagawa
Rooney ---- van Persie

A bit different I suppose.

If I was picking:

De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Jones* Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Nani Kagawa Welbeck
Rooney

Van Persie really does need a rest and whilst Rooney was gash against West Ham I'd like to see him up top.

Would be interested to see how that front 4 function.

I expect to see:

De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Smalling* Evra
Valencia Carrick Jones Welbeck
Rooney Van Persie

*Providing Vidic isn't deemed fit enough to play 3 games in 8 days.

I'll be quite pissed off if Jones is in CM against Villa at home.

What The Guardian thinks:

Match pointers:

• Villa have won just one of their past 34 visits to United in the Premier League – 1-0 in December 2009 with Gabriel Agbonlahor getting the goal

• Agbonlahor needs one more goal to pass Dwight Yorke (60) as Villa's all-time Premier League top scorer

• United have scored in each of their past 21 top-flight games, the next longest run this season is five (by Chelsea and Villa)

• Bradley Guzan has made more saves (205) than any other keeper in the division

• Shinji Kagawa has been involved in five goals (three scored, two assisted) in his past seven appearances

I'm hoping we'll see confident Carrick, fresh off his nomination. Alongside Cleverley in midfield - who's had a long enough rest to be sure.

Batter them. Decent win will not only ensure the 3 points but hopefully get the goal difference out of sight.

Can't believe I'm still a little worried.

De Gea
Rafael
Vidic
Ferdinand
Evra
Carrick
Cleverly
Kagawa
Valencia
Rooney
Van Persie

Bench: Amos, Evans, Welbeck, Giggs, Smalling, Nani, Hernandez

With this lineup, we'll thump them 3 or 4-0 IMO.

for all the talk about Rooney I think our best performances - away to City/Newcastle/Chelsea - featured him behind RVP and in front of 2 midfield players

I think its time we take the handbrake off - playing Phil Jones in midfield against West Ham was a negative move

De Gea
Rafael
Vidic
Rio
Evra
Valencia
Carrick
Cleverley
Nani
Rooney
RVP

I think we'll put in a performance and win this 4-0

we're certainly due one

I'm not worried about the result -- deserved victory will be ours.

But I would like to see us play a higher grade of football than what we've been witnessing since the debacle precipitated by the Turkish referee. I won't complain if we snake out another ugly win, but if we can pick up our game against Vill and give them a nice bitch-slap, that should tee us up nicely against our last two difficult opponents, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Somebody will have to fact check me on this to be sure, but if we beat Villa if City beat Spurs, anda then if we beat Arsenal on April 28, I think we'd have the trophy celebration at the Emirates. Sure, I'd rather have it at OT, but it would be fun to see RvP lift the trophy in his old employer's place of business. The message to Jack Wilshere would be clear: if you want to lift trophies, you go to work for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Yeah, there's a potential lack of width there. But what the hell have 'proper wingers' done for us this season anyway? Besides, Evra and Rafael provide plenty.

Being more realistic, I'm hoping Fergie might go for the same line-up but with Valencia instead of Welbeck. Which would be ok, I suppose.

No Giggs or Jones (except in defence where he belongs) please.

I picked almost the same players (just Evans for Rio) but set them up a bit different:

De Gea
Rafael - Vidic - Evans - Evra
Carrick
Welbeck ------ Cleverley
Kagawa
Rooney ---- van Persie

Were not having much joy with wingers and Cleverley and Welbeck and the fullbacks can add width.

I think those formations would actually end up playing very similarly, to be honest. And now that you mention it, Evans for Rio would be a good move. Feels like Evans hasn't had much game time recently, and at the moment I rate the two of them equally. It'll be nice to see a couple of those Evansbauer runs out of defence again.

thought Valencia and Kagawa had strong games last time out and I would love to see Nani get some minutes. I like seeing Danny in the team despite his troubles scoring but hes not a winger so let a winger play out there.

would be completely unnecessary to start Jones centre mid v Villa. They're not physical, and we're at home so don't need a spoiler!

One for Cleverley for sure.

LR7 does have Kagawa in his line-up, in the middle where he's at his best. Valencia's game was 'strong' compared to his poor form this season but nothing special otherwise. It's 50/50 for me whether he should start or Welbeck take his place as a wide forward. But I don't think any of our other wingers have done anything to justify starting ahead of Kagawa or Rooney. I'd rather have an in-form player drifting into the middle than a poor 'proper' winger. I'm normally Nani's biggest fan, and until recently kept hoping to see him in every line-up. But he's been so indefensibly abysmal in his last couple of outings that I think he's forfeited the right to expect to get 'minutes' by default this season.

are you sure you don't want to swap Carrick and Valencia in for Rafael and Evans while you're at it?
And maybe squeeze Anderson in at left back or something?
;)

I did have Carrick instead of Evans to begin with but I wouldn't want to leave us too open, which is also why van Persie is AM instead of a striker in a 4-4-2 system.

Alright Tony Pulis, no need for us to camp in our own box.

Yeah you're right, formations on the pitch are nowhere near as rigid as on paper! I think playing slightly more narrow might help make our passing more cohesive though - I don't think it's too much of a coincidence Newcastle away is still floated about as one of our most complete performances when we set up similarly - but on the big wide pitch at OT it's a different prospect I suppose.

sorry I should have specified that instead of going for a diamond shape we could go 4-4-2 with Kagawa and Valencia off the back of the West Ham game. Agreed that compared to his normal this season performance it was a good game but if hes been played through his poor patches then it doesn't make sense to take him out after a good one.

With Nani obviously its an ongoing debate that's raging in his own thread but Im of the opinion (and note: I've never played the sport competitively thus don't take me seriously :smirk:) since the Real Madrid sending off (which it was agreed he was playing well) hes played twice, both times in the F.A. Cup and both times subbed off (the home tie I think he was injured and the away tie he had the most horrendous half of football ive seen him play - however in the second half he was finding his feet to be subbed off).

We play a relegation candidate at home, which should bring us 3 pts away from the title, then we have an away game to Arsenal and at home to Chelsea where we might need all our weapons available to us. This is a good chance to get him some "minutes" that might benefit both us and him incase Valencia reverts back to off form, we are chasing a goal or injury occurs. Obviously his contract situation is detracting from the managers faith and his confidence but usually that side distraction is put aside (no pun intended) when the player steps on the field. I just think its a shame he sits on the bench when he could be of great use to us.

Let's put on a show tomorrow. None of this 1-0 and then we'll feck about and hang on for grim death. All out attack, United style.

We have only won the league once at Old Trafford after the 1999 win, and that was a boring 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

The fans deserves it again.

The atmosphere will be incredible. I really hope the players go out and put on a performance and win the title with a convincing victory.

I picked well in making this only my 3rd trip up of the season :-)

Could be a great night now.

Party time after the game. Villa are going to be up for it and I worry that players might think it's already over and be celebrating. I mean it is already over but I'd rather we actually confirm it tomorrow.

No, the players will be going all out to make sure tomorrow.
Like other posters have said, we haven't actually won it at home many times.
It's normally when we're not even playing.

A routine Monday night against the Villa has suddenly become Cup final significant.
