Antonio Valencia... | Will wear #25 shirt from this point onwards by request

So, so wasteful.

We've rarely seen him get this much space to exploit in ages, but what he produced was just abysmal. Rightly or wrongly, we keep selecting him out there and we automatically look to feed him the ball on counter attacks. I'm struggling to justify why Fergie keeps maintaining the status quo. Valencia doesn't deserve that much trust this season.

And I think even if someone was pointing a gun to his head and asked him to use his left foot, he would be like no, I dont want to. Useless! There has to be an award for not using your left foot for so long and it has to go to him.

No-one's happy with how Valencia has played this year. That shouldn't have to be mentioned every time you post in this thread...but then that's pretty much all everyone does say. Again and again. It's weird. Valencia isn't playing well and Sir Alex is trying to play him through his slump because the other wingers aren't playing well and Valencia still does the basics better than Nani or Young. Nothing's changed with that all year so why does the exact same discussion take place over and over again? Is Valencia the reason we lost today? Or is he just an easy target to vent your frustrations? It's pretty much always the latter, IMO, and I personally feel obliged to defend United players from undeserved abuse. Criticism's unavoidable but is it so hard to criticise aspects of a player's game while still being supportive of them?

Antonio Valencia at present form would not be starting for any other side in the top 5. The decline in his wing play has been shocking. 12 months ago I'd have backed Valencia to be able to take on any full back in the country. Now I genuinely think the likes of Adam Johnson or Matt Jarvis are more likely to beat their man than Valencia: Valencia doesn't even try to run at people at least they do. Antonio Valencia of today is not even half as threatening on the run to full backs as Aaron Lennon or Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and frankly he's not fit to lace Walcott or Bale's boots.

Valencia has been cut more slack than any other player in the squad. Even Rooney, who was once untouchable, has been dropped when he hasn't been at the races. You look at the stick Nani (deservedly) gets when he has a bad game and its amazing that Valencia can continue to be no better than average and get away with it. When Cristiano Ronaldo was a kid he used to get strips torn off him by many of us lot and yet Valencia has been able to coast along based on last season's exploits. No. If he doesn't improve he shouldn't play. End.

Yes, Antonio Valencia was shit today. Seriously though...some of the scorn towards Valencia is pathetic and irrational. For one, he's not picking himself and secondly it's not like he's trying to play poorly is it? You would've thought that for a player of such class that people would be a bit more forgiving than to completely come down on him after one very poor season. It's like people are trying to attach some sort of immorality to his shitness and are going way beyond the boundaries of constructive criticism in doing so. Only an internet forum I suppose but it makes this place a mess.

Title won or not, player of the season last year or not, he's fecking broken and it's not pretty. Paying those pennies towards his wages irks me.

I guess his form of last season means nothing then?

Tbf though not all the criticism is that he's a rubbish player but more why is he afforded so much more leeway than other players? I wouldn't say he's that much better at the basics and would argue that his wasefulness in attack atm, more than matches any extra protection he gives over nani, young and kagwa. Even Rooney or Hernandez could have started wide for us in a 433 today, none of them would give less protection than Mata. It's the same with the Torres criticism, a lot of it is simply why does he keep getting games when he's not doing anything. Valencia has been poor/average all season, you could probably count all his good games on one hand. That's a long time to play through a slump.

I am more concerned about Fergie's continued persistence with him than his own poor form. Makes no sense at all

Your only as good as your last game, lots of players have great seasons followed by turd ones but you would be hard pressed to say Valencia has been anything like his best since his injury.

His best came a season after his injury, did it not?

Berbatov had the best season and scored 20 goals for us. Did that matter? Nani was also brilliant these past two seasons before this current one? Does it matter now? We sold the former and are on the verge of selling the later.

Firstly Nani was far from brilliant last season secondly like the other chap your argument is irrelevant, Valencia has been at the club 4 years in that time he's had 2 very good seasons, 1 injury hit one and 1 very poor one - we should get rid because 1 of the 4 have been poor? :wenger:

He was OK in his first season, I wouldn't say he was 'very good'. So it could be turned around and said that in 4 years he's had 1 good season. See how easy it works.

In those 4 years Nani has more goals and assists than Valencia

What the hell are you talking about?

Nani in the 10/11 season had 10 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. In the 11/12 season, he had 10 goals and 12 assists. In that season Valencia had 6 goals and 15 assists.

feck me Toni, deserves another chance next year but man he's just shit right now. If we sell Nani now I will be pissed.

Ah because stats are the be all and end all aren't they :wenger:

Lambert has scored more goals than Rooney this season

Lambert and Rooney don't play in the same position.

I honestly don't get the love for Valencia's performance last season. He was pretty good, that's all, and his winning the award was just bizarre. He got dropped for our biggest game of the season for feck's sake.

You're point that he shouldn't be sold because he has had one good season for United is stupid and moronic

And mentioning Nani who has also had one good season in that same time period was your way of showing that? Now that's stupid and moronic

Except Nani's good season was actually to world class proportions and in all the 4 seasons his output has been greater than Valencia (in most probably lesser games as well).

Aye?? That being 4 years ago was as pointless as your argument. Fact is he's shit now, just like Torres.

So you sell a player as soon as they have a shit season then?

Guess Nani, Evans, Anderson, Evra and god knows who else should of been moved on years ago when they also had poor seasons then
