Hard to leave out so many great players - VDS, Vidic, Rio, Evra, Beckham, Rooney, Ruud.

I couldn't put Ronaldo in there anywhere. To me that midfield as a collective unit is the best I've seen in my time of supporting United - Beckham's crossing, Scholes' vision & passing, Keane's sheer determination and attitude, and Giggs' dribbling. And up front, the influence of Cantona with the goal machine that is Van Nistelrooy.

Gary Neville my hole....

Guy cost us 3 matches in Europe

So is Robson allowed? I know Fergie worked with him, but he wasn't his signing.

---------------Schmeichel----------------

--Neville---Ferdinand----Vidic----Irwin--

-------Keane---Scholes----Robson-------

Ronaldo------------------------Giggs-----

-----------------Cantona------------------

We'll do a second string for fun:

---------------van Der Sar---------------

--Rafael*----Bruce-----Stam-----Evra--

-------Beckham--Carrick---Ince----------

-------Solskjaer----RVN----Rooney-------

*Paul Parker is a wanker so I have to put Rafael by default.

When you consider the different periods the different players come from in both sides, it goes to show the array of talent Sir Alex has produced, bought, managed and nurtured. Incredible

Nice to see a few mentions for Ince and Kanchelskis, not that they necessarily make the best 11, but what talents they were (regardless if he was a big time charlie).

Bruce, Hughes, Pallister, Sharpe should get honourable mentions too.

Glad so many have Irwin in their teams, always seems to be a forgotten player, I thought he was excellent, Mr Dependable.

What has shocked me is some have picked VDS over Schmeichel, for me Schmeichel is the best keeper we have ever had.

Fair points - and completely get the collective midfield thing...but Ronaldo walks into any best ever United sides.

This may be going off topic...but the Madden video games have always/often featured historical/legend rosters.

Would be great to see this in FIFA/Pro Evo...

Fans of any club would love to put together their greatest ever team. Would be v cool online too!

I'm always surprised how many people put Schmeichel ahead of Van Der Sar. Schmeichel was more iconic by a long distance, he imortilises United, but Van Der Sar was ridiculous even as he got older and older. Doesn't take the plaudits in my opinion. How many hours without conceeding did he go?

I'm actually more surprised it's not Schmeichel for everyone. VDS was great, but Schmeichel is just a class above.

Basically the real questions in this discussion are

1. In which order to you have Evra, Irwin and Neville?
2. Which pairs of centre backs and centre forwards to use?

The rest of the side picks itself.

Not really.

- Do we include Bryan Robson who was a magnificent player but who was pretty much a fringe player by the time real success arrived?
- Should there be a place for David Beckham?
- Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 games but is that enough to overlook the fact that his five years here were five of the most barren years in the post-1993 period of the Fergie era? (okay, you covered this as one of the questions)

For me the centre-back pairing is the easiest question of all, by the way. Bruce and Pallister were both great players and Stam was a giant but none of them came close to the stability and impregnability that we enjoyed when Ferdinand and Vidic were at their peak. I know a lot of that is down to tactics but still, I believe they are the finest pair this club ever had. So, my XI looks like this:

Schmeichel

Neville
Ferdinand
Vidic
Irwin

Beckham
Keane
Scholes
Giggs

Cantona

Ronaldo

Irwin was a superb defender, and the model of consistancy... but for me, Evra was one of, if not the best left back in the wrold for about 2 or 3 seasons, during which time he'd put in a world beating performances in almost every game.

Schmeichel

Neville ---- Ferdinand ---- Vidic ---- Evra

Keane ---- Robson
Scholes
Ronaldo-----------------------------Giggs
Cantona

4-4-2:

---------Schmeichel--------

G.Nev---Rio-----Vidic----Irwin

Ronaldo--Scholes-Keane-Giggs

---------Cantona---RvN--------

Tough for Becks, Robson, Stam, Pallister and Bruce, and a bunch of strikers.

I'm sure someone will have posted this already but:

------------------Schmeichel----------------
Neville------Ferdinand-----Stam---------Irwin
-------------Keane---Robson----------------
Ronaldo----------Scholes---------------Giggs
---------------Van Nistelrooy----------------

subs: Cantona, Rooney, Van Persie, Vidic, Evra, Van der Sar, Beckham
