Guillermo Varela

Sensible signing, young, talented and cheap/ "value for money". As others have said it means less making do on the right hand side. We now have at least two fairly natural players for every position, except left wing!

We actually have four right footed wingers: Valencia, Nani, Young and Zaha. However Nani and Young can fairly comfortably cover the left wing. It does raise a concern that the only natural left winger we have turns 40 this year - Giggs and he mostly plays midfield now!

I wonder if Fabio would be any good as a left winger, he has played there once before. He certainly has the pace and a reasonable amount of skill and crossing ability. His defensive history would make him good at tracking back.

Do we conduct our medicals at Carrington now? Any sightings of the lad?

I doubt this guy will be considered a first teamer next season considering he hasn't broken into the Penarol senior side. One for the future.

Isn't our reserve side very short of defenders anyway? Wouldn't be surprised to see Varela going straight in our reserve team while adjusting to the league, culture, country etc. and Vermijl, after getting run-outs in the League Cup, going out on loan.

Right back?

Sir Alex's first signing was a right back.

Moyes is just copying Sir Alex :)

""I will have a medical on Friday and on Saturday I join the Uruguay Under-20 national team."

"The deal has been agreed, we now have to discuss some points, there won't be any percentage regarding any future transfer."

"The deal can be as much as 2.8 million Euros. Guille will adapt quickly to Manchester"

Translated that is around £2.4m, cheap, but substantially more than the original £1m mentioned. Would assume that its maybe the £1m up-front and then the rest based on appearances, so if we pay £2.4m it probably means it was worth it!

Well that crushes our dreams of signing Tony Hibbert!

What are we thinking, back-up to Rafael? Fabio as left back cover? Buttner out?

Why would Buttner be out, Evra is not exactly young any more, no reason not to have 3 left-backs, 2 once Evra moves on or retires

Haven't got a clue about him,but if the reported 1.2m is correct ,can't see it being a risk.

Feel a little gutted for Vermijl as he is about the same age and a very talented player. Thought he might get a chance this year, but perhaps he'll go out on loan instead.

Really? From the little (I must admit) that I have seen of him, I can't say he has ever looked like he even had a slight chance of making it with us.

According to some guy on Twitter, this is him on a plane here.

Can we really not afford first class? Not even Business? Glazer out.

He has very long hands.

Cant really complain about signing a young player for a small price. At 1-2m even if he doesn't make it there's not much of a risk.

I know it's wrong, but my immediate thoughts were of De Laet, Buttner and Schlupp (whom I know we didn't buy, but came close to doing so). I really hope the coaching staff can succeed in turning the guy into a United quality talent this time.

He's been very consistent and did pretty well in the game against Newcastle if I recall correctly. Gets up and down the pitch, scores a few, sets up a few. Good talent to my mind. Will see I suppose.

He has officially signed

On Friday, Manchester United reached an agreement with Club Atlético Peñarol to sign Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela.
Here, we assess the highly-rated youngster and learn more about his promising career...
The basics: Varela, who was born in Montevideo on 24 March 1993, is an ambitious full-back who plays on the right flank for South American giants Penarol in his native Uruguay.
The background: The 20-year-old has made one first-team appearance at the Centenario Stadium but is a regular for Uruguay's Under-20s with nine caps to his name.
The links: Guillermo recently completed a trial at Carrington and later spoke positively about the experience to South American radio station Tirando Paredes: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I'm glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”
The manager: “This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can’t deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.” – Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva.
The future: After reaching an agreement at Carrington on Friday, Varela's next step is to fly to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships – where future team-mates Angelo Henriquez (Chile), Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Larnell Cole (England) are also taking part. The tournament begins on Friday 21 June.

Is this chap going to be the Buttner to Evra on the right side?

ie the guy who has no hope of ever being the first choice, but will fill infor 3-4gamesa year?

Perhaps? he might even turn out semi decent.

Either way his head must be spinning right now, what a step up!.

Is that article saying he's only played once for his club side or once for the senior national side?

Seeing he had a trial at United last season it makes you wonder who's actually signed this lad.
