If Levy wouldn't sell to Real, who they did a deal with especially because of Gareth Bale, then he certainly isn't going to sell to us. Plus Real would outbid us without a seconds though. Not going to happen...
I don't get Levy's reputation as a some kind of transfer negotiating genius. The price he got for Modric was hardly 'high-end'. Unless the reports of his value, previous offers and fee demands were grossly exaggerated.

We'd be criticised if we weren't in for top class players who are available but neither club wants to sell Bale / Fabregas and sounds like neither player wants to move either. We've probably more chance of signing Ronaldo than these two.

I don't get this belief that prior to this date the norm for big transfers has been for each to be proceeded by a public statement of intent to sell or leave. Why has this now suddenly just appeared on the horizon as a necessary criteria for a transfer to happen? I don't recall anyone, ever, having this in mind before. I suspect the reason it's in mind now is to go along with this 'everything we do is incompetent - whatever it is' mindset that's going around.

Thats what we'll end up with... a side which will not be able to compete with a rejuvenated Chelsea/Citeh. We really do need to make some important signings this summer and make sure this is not just hot air. The dream lineup would involve unreal expenses, sums which United have never spent... but its interesting to see which deals are seen as priorities and which'll be left on the backburner.
A lot depends on the player though. He could force a move.
Plus, Real spent a lot of money already and I doubt they are that loaded like the Oil clubs

Why has the Levy is the "best chairman in the world" talk be become such common currency these days? He's nothing of the sort. Just because he comes out with these strong soundbites doesn't make him the best in the world at his job. Nonsense.

I've never said that he is the best chairman in the world. Far from it imo, in that he actually discourages players from signing as he doesn't let them leave for clubs irrespective of gentlemans agreements made. He treats other clubs poorly, especially in England, and obviously doesn't appear to have a good reputation amongst his peers.
However, because of this way of acting, purchasing players from him is notoriously difficult. We especially, because of the Carrick, Berbatov and Zeki Fryers transfers have a very bad relationship with him. Thinking that we can waltz in there with a bid lower than the one reputedely put on the table by Real Madrid earlier in the summer and expect to get a deal is bonkers. If anything we'll have to pay a premium to purchase him being a domestic rival (in his eyes - not ours).
As for Real Madrid having shot their financial bolt, that's never going to happen. The banks can be tapped up for another interest free loan at any point if neccesary and its been clear from the start of the summer that Bale is their number one target. Thinking that they are not going to get involved in any sale is insane.
Even if Bale comes out and states that he wants to leave and the only club he would consider is United, wouldn't guarantee he gets his way. Daniel Levy is many things but willing to sell Bale to an English club for £60m is not among them.
Id take Bale over Ronaldo - and I suspect Moyes would do the same this summer.
I can see Ronaldo coming back to United, but I think its much more likely next summer with 12 months left on his deal, if the club are still keen.
The Bale deal makes sense for United now - a top player, a statement of intent and a huge boost for the new manager. The big question is whether United are preapred to pay a high enough sum for him - because Spurs will have a fee in mind which they won't turn down.
I think the fact that Bale hasnt agitated and pushed for a move to Real Madrid, while still professing his admiration for the Champions League and not overtly claiming he doesn't want to move could bode well. A move to United seems like a good fit in theory.
If we make a bid it'll be an opening bid, and I suspect it'll be immediately rejected. Bout what of they go back with £70 million? At some stage Spurs would need to consider what's best for the club - and if the player wants the move then something could happen.

All teh noises coming from the club are positive. They've made an official bid for Fabregas and will have other irons in the fire. It seems clear they intend to, and will do their best to improve the sqauad, and for once it seems clear that the manager has big money to spend.
The season is weeks away and signing players takes time. People shoudl cut the club some slack and judge them at the start of the season. They may not get the players they want, but they're showing intent and trying to get the deals done.
Fabregas and Bale? It's a lovely thought. It's really not in the realms of reality. Bidding for a player not wanting to leave his club and a player who, if an offer is accepted Real Madrid would top it by 20 million.

I just tweeted Oliver Holt to say that I didn't expect articles like that from him, regardless of the fact that it's in the Mirror. He's not one for bullshit (it's obvious we'd WANT Bale but not obvious what we have planned), that's usually the jurisdiction of the likes of Martin Lipton and Alan Nixon.

Bale is a one-off for Spuds, so they'll rip the complete arse out of demandin an out of this world fee. They wont want to sell this season anyway, as he's vital for them to get into the Champions League next season. Its between them & Arsenal for 4th.

There is no difference. A player is available for what club is willing to listen to. Comparing the fees for Bale and Ronaldo is pointless mate. There was only one team that could realistically sign Ronaldo. They did. Here are 5 or 6 that could now go into the market for Bale. Pushing the price up as they go.
