Swansea City vs. Manchester United

 Bollocks. Anderson was inconsistent at best. In general I find that people who think Cleverley 'disappears' are just those who don't notice a player unless he's doing something hollywood. And not constantly going for the flash option is the exact reason that Cleverley is better there than Anderson.

Agreed. When Ando gets the ball, he heads towards the goal nine times out of ten, whereas Cleverley heads to goal one out of ten. I know which one I'd prefer in a match like this in a midfield two with a possible one-eyed Carrick.

STARTING XI
De Gea - Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra - Carrick, Anderson; Welbeck, Cleverley, Giggs - Van Persie

BENCH
Lindegaard, Fabio, Evans, Valencia, Kagawa, Januzaj, Rooney

decent side but I think we might struggle for goals if RVP isn't on form - I'd give Valencia a game - he didnt play midweek did he?

I'm not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic here or not. Either way, you're both wrong and missing the point.

What? I'm not being sarcastic. I would want Cleverley alongside Carrick in a tough away game. I prefer Cleverley in a midfield two. I prefer how he keeps it simple and I prefer how he doesnt sprint up the pitch with the ball leaving Carrick all by himself in the middle when the ball is turned over.

Tbf though, whilst I would say when in some of the big games where Clev had a restricted role he impressed me and certainly was an asset being in there next to Carrick, when he doesn't have those restrictions he often gets himself very far from Carrick as well. Ando tends to go through the middle, Clev seems to run out wide quite a bit, both leave Carrick isolated imo and both seem to completely run out of steam after an hour as a result most likely.

I'll be a bit surprised if Giggs starts on the wing. I suppose if neither Nani nor Young can make it then it makes some sense, it would be a tough first game for Zaha and Giggs is more reliable.

But it does boggle the mind a bit. Whatever happened to him as a central midfielder?

Yeah he has gone back on it a bit, sometimes it can be annoying as it doesn't quite work but in fairness he's shown his stamina is still there and usually now he ends up tucking in so almost like a 3rd midfielder, I guess of valencia or zaha play they'll provide the real width and then welbeck will move inside and out as required.

He'll be tucked in with Welbeck doing a lot of the donkey work IMO.

EDIT: This is in no way a veiled attempt at calling Welbeck a donkey... :nervous:

Oh, ok... you made it sound like you were saying Cleverley is a 'turn around and pass it back' player, which made your answer seem sarky. My bad, anyway. I agree. Although I don't like this misconception that Cleverley doesn't build attacks. He absolutely does, and our 'zombie football' always happens when he's not on the pitch. It's just that he does it more carefully than Ando, which means he doesn't constantly lose the ball like Anderson does. And he uses more passing and fewer of those 'eyecatching' driving runs which fool people into thinking Anderson is having a good game when he often isn't.

--------De Gea---------
-Jones---Rio-Vidic---Evra
Valencia-Carrick-Cleverly-Giggs
--------Welbeck-RvP------

Is what I think it will be.

Some overrating of Clev going on in here by Brightonian. ALso I would love to know the travelling squad. Why the feck do we not know already.

Cleverely disappeared for a lot of most games.Anderson was a lot more involved, and even looked fitter.
Seriously?. You will find he is either top or among the top in touches on the ball and distance run during the games we have had so far in the pre season. What have you been watching?

Much lower than Ando. I think Ando has been better

A lot of underrating of him going on in here too.

Definitely. He was ok during our pre season imo. Looked promising. Wouldnt say he looked much better than Anderson. They have their strenghts and weaknesses. Both decent midfielders though, although in tough games I'D also prefer Clev.

I'd prefer a new CM alongside Carrick tbh.

You've made that clear. Most people seem to disagree. Stack has pointed out some actual facts disproving your theory that Cleverley has been 'disappearing'. Which is really just the mindless parrot line about Cleverley, up there with 'only passes it sideways' about Carrick and 'clumsy on the ball' about Welbeck. None of them have much basis in reality. In fact, I thought that in a number of the pre-season games he got stronger and more influential as the match went on.

What happened to Zaha? Not even on bench for you?
I won't be surprised to see that lineup, but it is safe to say that that lineup doesn't give goal scoring confidence. Zaha instead of Anderson and we look decent going forward.

I'm still not sure if Cleverley is best used in the engine room with Carrick or in the 'hole' behind the striker. Either way, as you say it's not a very attacking team. Would prefer to use Kagawa behind RvP and Zaha on the bench at least.

Today's the day it all starts again

I don't like when Hodgson plays Cleverley in the hole and I don't think we should when we have more suitable players for that position, even Welbeck. Cleverley is our best option beside Carrick. I think Moyes likes a midfield three and I reckon it'll be Carrick, Cleverley and Anderson or Giggs in for Anderson.

Ideally, I will also like Kagawa instead of Giggs in there but we know that Giggs will start, don't we? :D If we have Welbeck-Kagawa-Zaha behind RvP, that is some counter attacking power to have possessing both creativity and pace.

A 2-1 win for United with Rooney coming off the bench to score the winner.

I guess it's just a matter of time before he's established as a CM only player. Remember that Scholes started out as a forward, and gradually became a central player - I hope Clev goes the same way because like you say we've got plenty of options for second-strikers and attacking midfielders. It's in the CM position that we need a superstar.

...then not celebrating? :D

I'm going to say 3-1 to United.

Swansea 1-0 up at half time, RedCafe in meltdown. Classic United revival in the second half.

Swansea 1- 3 United

At last PL football is back!. Got a good feeling about this . 0-2

Finally...it's the time to stop fannying around. Circle the wagons. Get behind the team and the manager. Light the red touch paper and let's fecking go.

My Dad got us tickets for this last night from a mate who can't go. Cannot wait.

The guardian seem to think we will play Giggs in a midfield two with Carrick against a Swansea team who can counter attack very quickly :nervous:
I think they're wrong.

The guardian are always wrong about our line up. I can't remember exactly what they predicted for the Community Shield but it was hilariously wrong.

Hoping for:

----------DDG
Fabio Evans Vidic Evra
---Carrick Cleverley
-Nani Kagawa Rooney*
----------RVP

*Or Welbeck

Don't have a good feeling about this. Only because its Moyes first game and Swansea are dangerous

I feel quite the contrary. He's hungry to prove doubters wrong likewise the players. We also have Vidic and/or Ferdinand fully fit to command from the back which is a huge boost. Welbeck has picked up his game steadily during the pre-season too.

I think - I hope - we'll surprise a lot of people today, positively.

De Gea

Jones
Vidic
Ferdinand
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Cleverley
Giggs

Welbeck

RVP

With Welbeck floating between striker position and left wing

4-5-1/4-4-2
