Today was an example of what can happen when Kagawa plays on the left, yet is allowed to drift in. Too much space is left un-used, and our left flank is pretty much isolated. I've never been a fan of playing with width, but we need some width in order to play a good offensive game. Does this mean that Kagawa is unable to play well on the left? By no means. But should he play there? No.
Based on potential and current form, this is our strongest front 6:
----- Carrick - Cleverley ---
Valencia - Kagawa - Januzaj
---------- Rooney ---------
I've taken out RVP because of his current overall play. Rooney is miles ahead him there. I've also taken out Nani because he's a bit similar to Januzaj, but the latter is currently much better. Valencia is useful to have because of his burst of power and energi.

He drifts inside. If you play two strikers in front of him, it's going to be crowded. If you play two strikers, don't play Kagawa. If you play one, play Kagawa. It's pretty simple.

The quality is there but one criticism I have of Shinji is that I don't think he's quick enough on the ball at times, although you could attribute that to the insistence of our players to stand around and do feck all.

Zombie football. We've been playing it for a while. Most of our players get the ball, then stand around. It's hard to watch.
Loads of time this game, it was Rooney out wide and Kagawa in the middle and he still did feck all.
I forgot he was still on in the second half, just couldn't get into the game and was no better than Nani.
IMO Kagawa should have gone of. Nani was his infuriating self but he was doing something at least unlike Kagawa

I think maybe we should try him slightly deeper as Carricks partner he should be able to still get forward from there and would bring a goal threat we haven't had since Scholesy dropped alot deeper. We need to find away of getting Rooney, RVP and Kagawa in the same side.

Playing on the left and drifting in, is nothing like playing behind the striker. Why? Because of the passing options and movement around you! When Kagawa leaves his left wing, then there's not really anyone there to take up his spot. When he then receives the ball in the center and is about to pass the ball on, he doesn't have attacking players running around him on both sides. It worked against Real Sociedad because they weren't nearly as strong defensively as Stoke were today. This, combined with Kagawa having a good day, made it so that we didn't need any width on the left at all. But usually we do. Today was an example of this.
Kagawa's looked impressive in the no.10 role ever since he came back from injury last year. We're probably only talking about 100-150 minutes combined, but those minutes have all been brilliant. It's about fecking time he gets a solid run in the no.10 position, now that he's finally gotten used to the PL. It's all up to Moyes.
I don't think he'll succeed there because of his defensive liabilities but I think it's worth a shot at this point. We don't have anyone else to play next to him

I thought he was okay today. Still needs to get used to Premier League football, as he relished playing against the Spaniards mid week. But what he can offer is clear. It's just building cohesion between the front four. The talent is there, but they look out of sorts in terms of rhythm.

Yea he was slowing the game and keeping the ball for hours. If that was not enough, some cringey shots and awful crosses ( bar that one that actually got to Rooney at last ).
Lack of any proper movement is always going to hamper players like Kagawa AND Nani. This is the problem.
Positioning of front four was a problem too today. We either lacked wings at some point while trying to force everything through the middle or we moved it all to wings and had nobody in the box.

There's a difference between a player being shite and a player struggling to get into a game. Our whole attack looked so static. Nobody moves or attacks space. No wonder Kagawa held onto the ball. You could see his arms gesturing for movement. As good as you want him to be, he's never going to be able to pass through the body of a defender.

I didn't think he was that bad. He didn't lose possession or do anything bad with the ball. He was just playing miles out of position, forcing the whole team to smudge into the middle of the pitch with no outlets.
