He just has such poor anticipation, and is generally slow at everything. Can't see that improving much, if at all?
The thing is no one is going overboard in praise, generally saying that he was better and played well. It's early days but he's already been written off by many on here who seem to dislike him because he's not as aesthetically pleasing as their dream signings.
Thought he was OK - a little better than average, but he's finding it hard to justify the pricetag, and I think he will continue to do so. If he had cost £15m or less, it would all be OK. He improved his game for tonight, so here's to hoping he will improve further. Looked a bit quicker around the pitch today.

Sociedad would struggle to stay up in the PL. Fellaini showed himself up to having no creative spark, no ability to time his tackles, no positional awareness, and basically no redeeming feature.
Standing in the middle of the pitch and occasionally breaking up an attack isn't a great display.

People moan about what he doesn't do but we don't know what he's been told to do so how can they moan? Isn't it better to have a bit of common sense and give a player time? Isn't it? Keane was a ticking time bomb. SCHOLES was a ticking time bomb. What this comes down to is quality and I think some people should wait and see how it develops over a 12 month period because right now Moyes is still working out his best team...or is that stating the fecking obvious?

A lot of them are transfer muppets who blame him for not get a cool Spanish midfielder or whatever. If Moyes had done what he said he would do, and got a second central middie, even the underwhelming Herrera, then a lot of these 'fans' would be calmer.

People are going apeshit here for some reason when it comes to Fellaini and I'd partially blame it on a lack of proper midfield signings and shit transfer window overall. 'He isn't good going forward', 'he can't pass it longer than 10 yards', 'he's not fast'. Could as well say that he's not fecking flying, shooting lazers out of his eyes and doesn't do this annoying Sturridge dance.
We've all expected a good playmaker and possibly a box to box midfielder to be brought here in the transfer window. We've got a defensive midfielder and people are expected him to fill in all those three roles now.

It's quite worrying that this appears to be his level. A slow, laboured game where he has enough time to think and pass it on. What's he gonna be like against Arsenal's quick players swarming all around him? In that defensive midfield role he's gonna concede fouls galore. We don't intend for him to stay up front and be a nuisance like he was at Everton. I still wonder why we were so dead set on him being the man for this job in the first place. We knew what his style is.
He still needs more time to show his true ability but it's gonna take a lot more to convince us. We can't afford to have a liability in such a key position. Learning when and when not to get stuck in is the first step to improving his defensive game.

We're here on some idiotic curve here as well, firstly it would be 'he's going to pummel and elbow everybody and get sent off'. When it's been proven that red cards in CL got feck all to do with any kind of logic ( Ribery elbowing Lewandowski in the final, Lewandowski elbowing Koscielny, Ramos elbowing Lewandowski again in the semi at Bernabeu ) we're hearing that he's just shit and clumsy.

He was very limited in his passing in the first half but when the game became open he was the one who released Kagawa a couple of times and found Rooney in decent positions. He provided cover for the back four although Sociedad presented little threat, that was evident in the few chances they created.

Agree with this, his style of play doesn't matter if he's effective. Only problem is that he's never been good enough to be effective at the top level. He hasn't shown his best form here yet and hopefully he continues to improve but even at his best he's lucky to have found his way to a top club. People didn't just want different players because they've a different style, they wanted different players because Fellaini isn't good enough to improve us significantly.
A defensive midfielder who's only way of defending is giving away free kicks isn't much use to us.
Don't get me wrong I think he is a decent player (never £28m), but he looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights since he's arrived, has not stepped up to the plate even in the lesser games. It's like Everton put stilts and a wig on Gibbo and sent him back our way.

What game were you watching? He made interceptions, tackles and forced errors through pressure on many occasions tonight. He did give a way a few freekicks, though some were undeserved. But to say that is all he did is idiotic.
People know his limitations and are pointing them out. I didn't want him here because I don't think he's good enough, but I'm reasonable enough to say he played better tonight. He did, it was an improved performance, and lets hope he improves more.

Well I for one don't mind being put into that category, football at its best is an aesthetic sport, I don't want United players to be lumbering oafs that are effective, that isn't my idea of what United should be.

The red card at the end changes perceptions, and rightly so, it was idiotic and unnecessary. Though having seen replays of both fouls, they were pretty harsh. The first one is barely even a foul.
Not many could've been too unhappy with that midfield performance if Hernandez or RvP had put away their chances and United were coming back with an easy 3 points having dominated possession and barely conceded a shot on their goal.

He looked decent in the opening 10 minutes or so, and I praised him for it, but he's so far from what we needed its unbelievable. Several ill timed challenges because he fails to read the game early enough.

Could we at last put it to bed alongside 'Rafael can't defend' cliches? You get away with anything in CL as long as referees see no problem in it. You'll get booked for bullshit and be left alone for elbowing people if one has such wish.
Out of 16 fouls we've commited today, he did it 5 times, while being fouled 3 times himself.
