Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

If you're a fan of Zizek there's a lot of videos of him on youtube, including many of his full lectures.

This is his short RSA Animated lecture (The entire RSA animated series is quite good, if you're into sociology, anthropology, ethics, economics & politics)

It's a clip from _Prevert's Guide to Ideology._

Oh I also watched About Time ..... which has the usual Curtis charm..... but time travel is beyond insane, if you can not think about it in any way, do so. But I couldn't, and it just gets worse the more I think about, which makes me know Curtis made no effort on that part of the story, thus I'm giving it a 1/10. Despite it probably being a half decent rom com should you be able to ignore the time-travel. I'm not sure time travel has ever been dealt with so flippantly, and that's some feat considering it's time travel.

Cloud Atlas - I'm not going to bother explaining this to anyone who hasn't seen it. It seems to be pretty polarizing in the reviews I've read but I loved it from start to finish. 10/10
Glad you enjoyed it. I feel it's a film that, for the scale of its ambition was criminally overlooked by filmgoers. I don't know if it was different in the US or the UK, but over here I can't find a single sould that has seen it. I was impressed when I watched it at the pictures, and didn't quite know what to make of it when I got out, but it's been a few months now and my opinion of it just got better with passing time. There's a lot to take in, but it's a superb film with great performances, a bit of humour, and incredible directing and editing (though the first 30 minutes are pretty hard to get into, I'd say, the rest of the film just flows perfectly which is a real 'tour de force' considering the material).

I wonder whether it's worth reading the book?

Evil Dead 2
Didn't think it was as good as the first but still a very fun film with loads of laugh out loud moments 7/10

The Butler
Thought it was quite boring to be honest and made for the Oscars. The acting was decent, loved the ensemble cast for the presidents and Forrest Whitaker was decent. The film just didn't have much depth and just plodded along which is a shame 5.5/10

I thought it was brilliant even though any time anyone asks me what it's about I find it hard to explain. I watched it with two mates and they hated it which just shows it is a polarizing one but I just think it requires you to have an open mind. It looks stunning, the music is gorgeous and the performances and story just had me entranced even though I didn't know what was happening a lot of the time. I'm definitely going to give it another watch soon.

American Hustle - Another safe film for David O'Russell. Not bad, but not great either, so his RT score and awards fare will continue to sour. Insane overacting at times, although that could of been the wardrobe making me think that.

I think calling it safe is harsh, I just think he's got older and was tired of making difficult films.

On the other hand, the plot for his next picture is batshit crazy.

"A small town waitress gets a nail accidentally lodged in her head causing unpredictable behavior that leads her to Washington, DC, where sparks fly when she meets a clueless young senator who takes up her cause - but what happens when love interferes with what you stand for?"

Let me guess, the waitress is Jennifer Lawrence?

The Selfish Giant - A good little film, devastating social realism with subtle arty touches that elevates it over similar kind of films. It was a bit of a challenge to understand the actors without subtitles though.

About Time As sentimental as Love actually and not as funny as most Richard Curtis films but lovely to look at and IMO it gets away with the sentimentality by being very genuine. That said it might be a bit much for many. There is a time travel plot that is so full of plot holes that you either need to decide to go with the premise or stop watching. If you don't stop then you will either love this film despite it being less balanced than 4WAAF or Notting Hill or find it cloying and hate it. 7.5/10

I really enjoyed the book. It'll certainly help understand the film better if you decide to read it.

Delivery Man

Not quite the Vince Vaughan movie. A feel good comedy that is designed in such a way that every frame is designed to make you 'feel good;. Not that strong a story and if you ignore the obvious gaps, it still comes out as a good movie. Some good comic lines, combined with the light vein of the movie, keeps you from being bored. Definitely worth a watch

7/10

He spoke about it in one of the Hollywood Reporter roundtables, said he'd become too focused on being unorthodox and it effected the quality of his films, so he began not giving a shit about it. I think his last three films have all been very good, and along with Three Kings make for an excellent catalogue.

That's not an upcoming film, it's a cancelled film.

On quick investigation it seems to be in development hell.

Watched American Hustle last night too, thought it was excellent. As most people have said, Bale was great; as were most of the cast. Loved the music and direction too.

Stoker. Ponderous, style over substance chanel advert. Displays the director's suspect penchant for fetishising women, garments and violence. Typically vacuous film making from Park Chan-wook.

Dallas Buyers Club - A really good, solid character study carried by the the performances of McConaughey and Leto who were superb and virtually unrecognizable.

Maniac - remake starring Frodo Baggins, very gruesome movie but not great. 5.5/10

Silver Linings Playbook - Rom-com, but a nice movie - 7/10

The latest Die Hard - utter shite - 2/10

Saw American Hustle, the movie was great.
Surprised with a happy ending though. So much potential there with some people getting screwed over.
Great cast, nice performances by the cast and the cameo was superb. Overall, it was a great movie. I do think it's overhyped though. 92% rating on rottentomatoes by critics does build up your expectations. I don't understand the cribbing about the soundtracks, I thought it was quite good.

8/10.

I'm not sure if I should see the Wolf of the wall street now.

Spoiler alert please Fishy!

Watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty today, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. There's not too much to be said about it really, it's a well done feel good film with some stunning shots when Walter goes travelling. I thought there was a bit of a problem midway through the film with the rhythm that seemed a bit off, but it's a minor quibble. The little cheesy twist at the end was nice, albeit a bit too cheasy. I'd recommend seeing it if you're in the mood, but if you don't like these kind of films you'll probably loathe it.

So after watching '12 Years A Slave' the other night, I thought I'd get take a scotch or two and get round to finally polishing off the McQueen/Fassbender trilogy by watching Shame tonight and I have to say that for the first hour or so it blew me away. Some of the most genuinely honest and brave performances I've seen in a long time. It wasn't so much a film about sex addiction for me as it was about a guy trying to love but simply not knowing how to. Fassbender and Mulligan were both superb and the scene where Fassbender goes on a date with the woman from work was incredibly organic. Loved it. But....
the gay club scene didn't make sense at all for me and the suicide attempt from his sister was entirely predictable even if they did a clever switcharoo regarding the circumstances
. For the first hour I was thinking why are people saying this film is about sex addiction when it's about a lot more than that but then they threw that scene in and sort of shit over the vibe I was getting from it. Shame (pun intended) because I think if that last half hour or so was tightened up you'd have a genuine masterpiece on your hands there.

Still, the work that McQueen and Fassbender have done together in 3 films is untouchable at the moment.

12 years a Slave 9/10
Stunning. Stunning. Stunning.

I've seen it got great reviews but is not at all preachy or self-righteous like these kinds of films can be?

Nothing preachy about it. Just a guy in a very fecked up situation. The most harrowing parts in the film are when the camera just rests on the main character for a time giving resonance to take in what is happening. It's incredible, the performances, the cinematography. The script. The dialogue. I was blown away.

When he joins in with the gospel singing I was in tears.

Am defo up for seeing it, but have found some films about slavery and the like somewhat overbearing and heavy-handed with the message. Was somewhat cynical about the timing of its release too, two months ahead of the Oscars, but haven't heard anyone heard a bad word said about the film tbf.

It was released in the states a few months back. Only just out here now. Awards season probably had something to do with it. This is like his previous films an introspection into a person and the astonishing situation they are in. It resembles Hunger more than it does Shame. As a piece on slavery, it has far more of impact in just the moment he is first in chains than Django could muster throughout the whole of it's run time.
