FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013

Glad for him, you could tell by his and his family's reaction how much it meant to him. I burst out laughing when I saw his tense face seconds before the announcement.

The media would have crowned Ribery by all accounts. All the lists do is reinforce the belief that few footballers and managers watch much football outside of their own.

Plus it's biased. Robin reckons Robben is the best player in the world.

Yeah, Lloris voted Ribery 1st, Neuer 2nd and Bale 3rd.

I think most of the media took into account that Ribéry won everything while the other two did not.

Ashley Williams: Gareth Bale, Xavi, Cristiano Ronaldo

The voting must have been very close this year.

I said in the who should win it discussion that my answer would be Ribery because it should tell you something about the year. This feels like a guilty, 5 year achievement, vote for Ronaldo. Not that I mind, because I like him, I'd just have given it him last year, when he'd actually won something.

So next year then. All about the World Cup. Brazil win and it'll be Neymar, Argentina and it'll be Messi. Spain and it'll be - maybe finally a Spanish Ballon D'Or on the pent up guilt thing, or more likely, Messi. Germany wins and it'll be Ramos.

Don't really care, but congrats to him anyway.

He's probably been the best over the last year, though I'd have preferred Ribery to shake things up a bit. Messi is still the best player around, but Ronaldo had the better year.

Media votes seem the most honest. And that is why the Ballon D'Or was always a more reputable prize.

Do you think Ronaldo would swap this for another league or cup win if he had the choice?

No way.

Not sure about honest. The media usually rates success with the team higher, that's why Ribery won the UEFA footballer of the year award. In the end when all these players and managers decide, he wasn't the best and individual skill counts more than being influential in winning, there's nothing wrong with it, imo. Said it before, all 3 deserved it and the really close results show that imo.

I also think it was great, that Ronaldo cried. It was an honest reaction and made him way more likeable to me and also gave the award some meaning.

A lot of managers voted Fergie as coach of the year and then you reach the media votes and every single one is for Jupp, rightfully so mind.

TBF to Messi he said this in pre-tournament conference. Good from him

However, Messi, 26, insisted that despite the duo's ongoing on-field contest, he is a great admirer of the Portugal captain.

"He has great qualities and I admire what he does for his club and for his country," Messi explained at the pre-ceremony press conference.

"Above and beyond the fact we are rivals, he is an outstanding player."

He actually cried? Jesus H Corbett that's ridiculous. You should thank your team mates and manager, say it's an honour to be nominated try to get Adriana Lima's phone number.

Individual awards in a team sport are silly, especially with the voting being as flawed as it is.

Sorry, I wasn't looking at it in such depth. Should have been more clear.

Just meant that the media seems to vote with less than an agenda. The Portuguese media represntative voted for Ronaldo, Ribery and Messi. Same can't be said of Ronaldo himself or our national coach.

The German media guy voted Ribery, Lahm, Ibra while Lahm voted Ribery, Ronaldo Messi. The exact opposite, biased media, fair nationalteam captain. Pretty sure it evens itself out somehow or not, but I doubt you could say one party is less biased than the other.

Did they show Messis reaction when Ronaldo was announced? They normally do the other way the past few years Messi has won it.

I loved Messi when he was smiling like that. It looked like he didnt know what was going on which is weird because he did know what was going on.

Bloody hell Messi looks inconsolable:

They were showing all three player faces. Nothing worthy of note. Yellow smile and applause from both him and Ribery.
