Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Wolf of Wall Street - fecking Excellent. A film that, in time, will stand up with Goodfellas as a Scorcese masterpiece. It's 3 hours long, but it never feels like it, and ontop of that, I can't think of many, if any scenes that were wasted. Di Caprio is brilliant - a worth Oscar winner if he gets it - everyone else does their part, and it's all put together brilliantly.

Oh, and it's bloody hilarious!

Surfer, Dude is one of the most ridiculous films I've ever seen. He's shirtless for the entire movie and plays it completely straight.

Why were you watching this in the first place?

Are you a fan of surfing? If so, watch Point Break. It's the only surfing film worth watching.

Contracted

A very strange film,a girl goes to a party and has sex with a stranger, this stranger is wanted buy the Police for reasons unknown. This girls thinks she has contracted a sexual transmitted disease, but its not it is something much worse.
It was very slow in parts, to be honest never really got going.

3/10

american hustle - enjoyed the second half a lot more. it needed more dick swinging scenes between bale & cooper, the bit on the plane was by far my favourite part. other than that, bale & adams' relationship was pretty good, save for their crappy cliché-ridden opening monologues.

dallas buyers club - good watch, brilliant performances, not good for my tinnitus (LANA).

her - enjoyable, just too much of it felt nerdy male fantasy to be great.

the fall - i liked it. as advertised, it's visually so pleasing but the childlike plot is really patchy. the interaction between the child star & adult lead, made it.

detective dee - mindless entertainment, some great visuals made up a little for the lacklustre plot.

the wolf of wall street - phenomenally boring story so it dragged a bit, but somehow it was a pretty great film. the meeting where they planned the, er, throwing contest was genius.

bad lieutenant - weird watch given how ordinary it was for so long. the iguanas & cage's rant in the nursing home cracked me up for a few minutes straight. entertaining enough overall thanks to a rare, satisfying ending.

A Serious Man - Funny, thought provoking and typically quirky - an unmistakable Coen Brothers movie.

Carrie (2013)

Not a patch on the original, the acting apart for Moore was poor at best, I thought the girl who played Carrie was hopelessly out of her depth, did not do the role justice.
The burning of the prom was not has good as the original, for me did not have the shock value.
Not the poorest remake I have ever seen, but it comes pretty close.

3/10

Inside Llewyn Davis - A somberly comic tale of artistic failure and aimlessness. The Coens were unrelenting in their portrayal of the downtrodden, unsympathetic but at the same time sympathetic Davis. Low-key, well-crafted, it's the best work they've done in quite a while in my opinion.

Dallas Buyers Club
Very good film, slightly dragged on towards the end, should have probably been 15-20 mins shorter but the performances from Matthew Mcconaughey and Jared Leto really pull the film through though and worth watching for sure. Very depressing so you do need to be in the mood for that kind of thing 7.5/10

The Ring (Remake)
Never watched this because Ringu is one of my favourite horror films and I didnt want to see how Hollywood would feck it up but finally watched it yesterday after reading a good review and thought it was ok. It is probably one of the better Hollywood remakes and can see why western audiences would probably even prefer this one to Ringu. The films does tail off a little and becomes a bit stale after a very strong start as they do the 'Hollywood' thing and try explain ever nook and cranny of the story but still an enjoyable ride. Not as good as Ringu but definitely worth a watch 6.5/10

It is better than you think it will be, but predictably it cannot recreate the atmosphere and spookiness of the original. A few of the Japanese horror remakes have been OK if you judge them as standalone films tbf. It's just that they are never as good as the original.

Escape Plan. It's a really fun, enjoyable old school action movie. The acting is horrible in a good way and especially Arnie has some awesome cheesy lines. I got exactly what I expected. 7/10

Gravity.

Must admit I was not blown away with this, but I did enjoy it.
I am not a big Clooney fan and he did nothing to change my mind.
Sandra Bullock was excellent, carried the whole film for me.
Good story and some excellent camera work.

6.5/10

What didn't you like about it?

I just thought it was a very dull movie. I usually like slower paced films, but this seemed like it lasted forever and I just couldn't take in the crying and fighting he was having with his OS. At times it was laughable. I can see why you enjoyed the film yet didn't have the same affect on me. I think 9 out of 10 is too generous and it being nominated for best film is ott. Although I did think Phoenix did a superb job and that was the highlight of the film for me. The wise cracking video game character was pretty funny as well. It wasn't a terrible film but certainly avg at best.

Agree that's a fair rating.

That's fair enough, I can understand that if the movie doesn't "click" with you as it did with me it can be quite tedious.

Well there's this evil, right? And people want to be delivered from it.

Did you watch it at the cinema in 3D?

No my 18" laptop, I suspect it would be better watching in 3D at cinema.
Yeah. I have no interest in watching it at home. It was purely a cinema rollercoaster film. Without the 3D and huge screen I imagine it's all a bit daft.

There's no point in watching Gravity on your laptop imo. It's brilliance lies in how immersive it is in 3D in the cinema.
