I was surprised when Rooney took it too frankly. Given the playing staff we had at the time it was logical but it doesn't feel like a forwards number. An 8, to me, is an orthodox centre midfielder. Maybe its because I remember Incey wearing it but, when I talk about a number 8, I mean a proper box-to-box midfielder. Mata doesn't feel like an 8. 7,10,11 are more appropriate for a player who operates in advanced areas like he does and I figured, as 10 and 11 were taken, that 7 would be his.

Me too. I was surprised Rooney didn't get 18 with Scholes getting 8 that season. But after seeing Rooney and Scholes in it (Scholes for England) I've come to accept 8 as what I described in my previous post.

I dunno. I've always associated 8 with a player who is equally tenacious as he is talented with the ball. Scholes and Rooney comes to mind. Nice number.
Scholes? Sure all he does is smash the ball against trees, boring number. Mata should've taken 69 because that's what his beard makes all women want to do with him, and by all women I mean men, well, me, mainly me.

Well it's just a very modern, semi-designed mythology. It didn't actually start as a "thing" until Cantona left. Robson wasn't running around in the "Iconic No7 shirt" (At least I dont think - I was about 9 tbf) In fact Robbo was still here when Cantona came. Wearing 12 if I remember correctly. Then Beckham was basically wearing "Cantona's shirt" to most people. When he left and Ronaldo got it, that's when it properly started to become this mythology, and Best was retro-fitted to it. We did have a ridiculous uninterrupted string of truly great players wearing it from like, mid-80s to 2009 though. Which is definitely cool.

But yeah, Adnan just feels right to me. Being a young player too, which - if we just go with the mythology - Best, Beckham & Ronaldo brought to it.

I always think of 8 as Gazza's number. Mata fits that bill for me.

Sure, I think you hit the nail on the head - it's just fecking cool. I know if I played for United it's the shirt I would want. Best did however number 7 but also 11. And others I think, Robson also definitely wore it at times. But like you, I'm in no place to remember because well, I wasn't around in my physical form.

Robson definitely wore it, and with distinction, it just wasn't "a thing" when he did. Neither really was it with Cantona. It started to be made a deal of post Eric (and only as a great, historical mythology post David) is my point. Which I just instinctively think as "modern" when in actual fact, it's depressingly ancient.

Also, going back to 8, I liked when Rooney was 8. It clicked with my Gazza connection, and it made him & Ronaldo 7 & 8, which was...erm...something.

I think 8 suits him perfectly. Not sure why.

Me too.

10 is right for Rooney (who will most likely play as a 10 more frequently than Mata), 7 and 11 should be for explosive players (Januzaj and someone new), and 8 for a technical and efficient attacking player (Mata).

I think it set a precedent as well. Modern United was defined by the level we now expect our number 7 to be. The shirt is iconic to the team because - especially in Cantona and Ronaldo's case (Robson in a way though as you mention wasn't the same "thing" then) those two were the benchmarks of quality.

Mata would have made an excellent 7 but also he doesn't have that arrogance and he probably felt it'd just bring another element of pressure alongside his price-tag. Going for 8, realistically, was probably the best idea he's had since he signed his name on the contract.

great signing for Utd. Welcome Juan.

Ps;just as well he called Jaun. . Imagine if he was called Tom:)

Bought my first player shirt since Rooney in 2005...weirdly also number 8.

I'm 22 and I'm not remotely embarrassed even though I laugh at grown men who have their Chicharito shirts on show.

16 EPL games left
1440 minutes + 80 added on (fergie time)
I hope we will see our number 8 playing all of it with lots of goals and assists.

I'm really beginning to think the club will do something wank-worthy this Summer. It's all very exciting.

I think 8 suits him more than 7. I've always seen 8 as the slightly deeper attacking midfielder in the team e.g. Messi 10, Iniesta 8.

I reckon we could go for the first ever triple digit number with Ando. He has the heft to pull it off.
I reckon we will sign a multi million pound deal with bet365, and have Anderson parade it around on his back. He is after all a giant walking billboard.

£70 for a Mata shirt

M8T8

That's woeful.

Anyway, watched the video above and my word he's a cool customer. Really can't wait now till tomorrow to see him playing.

I spose 8 implies they're thinking about him centrally, rather than on the wing? Clutching at straws here.

I seem to be in the minority but I'm not really bothered what number he wears, now we're in the era of squad numbers.

Anderson have probably not even cleaned his locker yet and now Mata is wearing the #8. I think that sends a clear message out to mr Anderson on what kind of level we expect out #8 to have.

Btw, I don't feel like starting up a new thread so how about setting the ability attributes on Mata in this thread?

How many poor feckers bought the 7 Mata shirt over the weekend?
Not even going to lie, I was close. Got a mate who works at sportsdirect so it's easy access to personalised printing. I asked and he just told me when to say when I wanted it. Luckily I wasn't stupid enough to have it done before they actually announced it.
