Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Ender's game 5/10

Basically it was shit. The scenario was badly adapted, they skipped Ender's 10 years of training and acting was very bad.

Even for someone like me who usually gives higher than deserved rating to sci-fi moves, this was very mediocre. Even Battleship was bettee.

12 Years A Slave

As a film it's a brilliant creation. Its look, its performances, its script. It lacked narrative drive for the first half an hour or so and my mind wandered a little. Stylistically shared a lot of characteristics with Shame but had far more heart and a powerful ending. Fassbender steals the show which leaves you ffeeling slightly uncomfortable. Eliojofor is also terrific.

I agree with that. It's brilliant, but a lot of the bits leading up to Fassbender's introduction don't really seem to go anywhere. Obviously it's a true story so it doesn't follow a convenient narrative, which isn't it's fault, but it doesn't help the film (much like Wolf Of Wall Street - which I liked less than this) There's also a really weird fingering scene that seems to have no relation to anything at all, and yet links the narrative together for some reason.

There are several stunning sequences though. The one near the end, done seemingly in one shot, is both brilliant and horrifying.

I haven't that film and while you have a point it, depends on how you play the part. It's pretty easy to ham it completely as a "typical perception of XYZ type of person".
It wasn't by any means a criticism of Leo's performance. Considering his age it's terrific. But I think that sort of role accommodates an actor in a particular way, and from a technical standpoint isn't his peak.

I think one of the hardest parts to swallow from a narrative point of view is

his lack of resistance to the incredible injustice that's placed upon him, which is almost certainly realistic but doesn't necessarily lend itself well to a film. For me it kicked off with his Paul Dano beating. The tension that moment created - the semi-hanging, Cumberbatch protecting him from a lynching - kicked the film into gear.
Also if I was to give my film student reading of the fingering scene it would be something about the isolation and theft of humanity the slaves endured, their inability to create bonds because they're all false recreations of real ones. Or something.

I didn't mind the...

fingering scene as a thing, but as the bit that linked the beginning to the last 3rd (it's pretty much the first thing we see, and it's reappearance is where we "catch up" so to speak) I didn't get it's relevance. I kept waiting for that character to turn up and be an important part of the story. And then she wasn't. In fact, the actual scene happened in probably the least important part of the whole film. It was just a weird way to begin.

I watched the second Expendables movie the other night. My word but that is a total load of shite.

0/10
Disagree. At least this one realises that it's stupid and has lots of tongue in cheek humour and laughs at itself where as the first one just took it self too seriously. I thought it was enjoyable enough.

Anyone seen The Act of Killing yet? Want to watch it but not sure it's exactly cozy friday night with the missus viewing.

Edit: feck it just watched the trailer again, I have to see it.

I guess I wont be getting any tonight.

Quiz Show - A good show. It made me think of Wolf of Wall Street on a few occasions, Rob Morrow's character was pretty similiar to the FBI guy in Wolf and Scorsese himself played a bit part in it.

Enders Game. God it was awful. Whoever thought that a supersmart arrogant kid who gets everything thrown his way would be a good lead character should be fed to an alien queen. Also the ending pissed me off big time.

So there is an alive alien 5 metres next to the human base and nobody ever bothered to have a look? And in the end they just let him fly off with the queen to repopulate the enemy race that they were desperate to destroy?

1/10.
I was told to read the book first, and the advice paid off. Movie does a terrible job of portraying the kid in the film, and the ending.

American Hustle

Entertaining (until it runs of steam and comes to a fairly limp conclusion). Renner does the best actual acting, the rest of the performances are fun but hardly Oscar worthy.

It had a very Scorcese vibe so it's quite easy to compare it to The Wolf of Wall Street. This didn't have as many obvious flaws as TWOWS but was ultimately more lightweight.

Still worth seeing though.

How was it? I ask because my best mate is Indonesian and has been telling me to watch it for quite some time now.

Also, is it fiction or a documentary?

It's a documentary. I didn't go for it in the end. But it's definitely a must see. Watch the trailer and you'll get the picture.

No last night we went with Christian Bales new one:

Out of the Furnace which I really enjoyed. Think The Town, meets Lawless.

Yeah, I've seen the trailer, which to be honest, doesn't really appeal to me.

While it could be great, I'd rather watch a normal flm like Out of the Furnace aswell.

Yeah it's probably a bit of a horses for courses one alright.

I really enjoyed Out of the Furnace.

I've seen it, it takes a bit of a while to really get going but turns into a very interesting film by the end, despite the contrived scenario.

Ah yeah you can see the plot coming a mile off and there are loads of holes in the story if you look for them.

I like Bale though, weirdly I also like Willam Defoe (even those polar bear ads are cool).

Literally hadn't heard a single word of review before I watched it either which is how I prefer to see film. Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years a Slave, while all good, were ruined by the hype, for me. We'll not ruined but I like to be surprised by a good film rather than sit there expecting.

The Counselor

The opening scene in this was pretty much the Alan Partridge Linton Travel Tavern sex scene played straight .... "Do you like me doing that to you? Shall I do it more quickly or shall I maintain the same speed?" and I thought, this is going to be every bit as shit as I've heard it is. There is so much wrong with it - the casting (Diaz and Bardem are just both wrong, Pitt in another one of those slightly mysterious but cool Brad Pitt cameo performances, Hank from Breaking Bad in a wtf appearance), the script (the philosophising I don't have so much a problem with as just dialogue that doesn't really go anywhere e.g. Bardems "I want to eat your pussy" story) but I just couldn't bring myself to hate it. I don't think it's nearly the car crash movie that the critics would have you believe and on the contrary I think with a few changes it could have actually been very good. I kept comparing it to 'No Country..' and wondering how it might have been in the hands of the Coen brothers who would've both tightened up McCarthys script and made the likes of Bardem and Diaz quirky rather than cartoon. A missed opportunity I'd call it rather than a complete flop. Oh and there's a great line from Fassbender to Rosie Perez after he agrees to front the $400 to get her son out of jail...

Perez - "I owe you one"
Fass - "Yes you do"
Perez - "How about a blowjob?"
Fass - "Then you'd still owe me 380"

If you're in the mood for something wordy and downbeat then watch it. If not, avoid.

The one I remembered from him is one that will make any woman's heart melt. When he's on the phone with Penelope Cruz and she asks him if he misses him;

"I miss you so much... Life is lying in bed with you. Everything else is just waiting."

Hell, even I wanted to feck him.

Sure beats "Get your tits out for the lads."

Really enjoyed Wolf of Wall Street. I thought it was going to be another Gordon Gecho type film glorifying douchebaggery on the stock market, and it sort of was, but none of the characters took themselves seriously which made it more enjoyable. I thought the addition of Jonah Hill worked very well.

The Fourth Kind.

A thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Nome Alaska, where an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a federal cover up.
They said it was based on a true life event, I clearly was not, it was all made up
Just another Abduction film, that failed to get off the ground.

3/10

Watched Safety Not Guaranteed last night. Really enjoyed it, without being able to put my finger on why. I like Jake Johnson a lot though, and the female lead is weirdly attractive. The bloke who directed it (Colin Trevorrow) is doing the next Jurassic Park film, so thought I'd give it a watch.

and the female lead is weirdly attractive.
Hands off, she's mine.

That's a good film, though like you I wouldn't really be able to put my finger on why I liked it so much. Just felt very sincere and from the heart.

I though I Frankenstein looked good, I'm very disappointed to find out its shit.
Where have all the good sci-fi or fantasy films gone?

Is 'Bitches....leave' in it?
 Don't think so.

Damn. I keep seeing the trailer and it has the 'dead or alive, you're coming with me line'. Am sure it repeated another one two. Can't believe they ditched the best one of all. Did they have 'can you fly?'

Is the storyline around the baddies basically just completely different?

EDIT: Robo's voice sounds all wrong too.

EDIT EDIT: They reuse 'Thank you for your co-operation' too.

Shes in Parks and Rec love that show

Anyway watched PROJECT X last night

For any parents of teenagers don't watch if you ever wanna trust your child again. This is a fun and crazy ride which starts slow but slowly
turns into one of the most epic things you'd ever want to experience and by that I mean the stuff in the film is epic and would be crazy to of
been a part of it. The movie itself is hugely self indulgent and has clichés absolutely everywhere, from the weirdo camera kid to the dick best
friend to the hot girl love interest. But the problem is all this is just done way better in superbad, which is just a much better film. Although
there are loads of boobs :D

6/10

Madhouse
I dont know what possessed me to watch this. Piece of shit. Good opening shot 1/10

Lone Survivor

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Good action scenes, good acting (especially from Ben Foster) and was quite emotional considering this stuff actually took place. Im not a fan of war films normally but this was quite decent. Excellently shot as well 7/10

Prometheus - If a tree or a giant bloody spaceship is falling over you, run to the sides not straight ahead. Man will forever be doomed to the eternal quest for knowledge until she finally learns this. Anyway, the film was alright for a while before it turned a bit shitty. Shoddy writing, cardbboard cut-out characters, shallow Von Däniken insightfulness. I never expected to entertained on a cerebral level but as a suspense piece it wasn't really good either, and about as atmospherical as the planets atmosphere. It seems like the Science Fiction genre, well "science" would be a bit too much, is now lost to hacks like Abrams and Lindelöf.
