Liverpool

We've a game in hand. It could easily be four after tomorrow.

Says who?

You won't be winning the league title, but by all means build yourself up, I think I would piss myself if Liverpool did pull it off, we've been labelled best of a bad bunch many many times but that would eclipse all before, it would be a bigger joke than your 2005 fluke.

Still think you're getting third?

Getting an additional 30-40m will help though don't you think? I don't know how you know our wage capacity.

Your wage is 70% of your turnover, which is very high already. Ours is just 51% because we turnover double what you do.

Our wage bill is currently over £60m higher than yours which gives you an idea of our financial muscle compared to yours.

I'm aware your financial muscle is greater. And where are you getting these current % figures from?

Nope we won't be moving far from where we are, just like yourselves, should be funny watching you in Champions league next year though, how does seeding work when you haven't seen the competition for a few years.
I will be having pay out on my wager with Al too, that's another £20 Nialls getting off me.

Our seeding is going to be absolutely fecked. We just have to hope we do a Chelsea and get an easy group.

I genuinely believe that the whole package United can offer a player would still eclipse Liverpool's even if they have UCL Football and we don't.

On what grounds though?

Higher wages? Surely if United finish outside the top 4 cutting wages will be a priority.
Better manager? Hmmmm
Bigger fanbase? Perhaps but it's not as if Liverpool aren't well known either.

There's always the hope Moyes turns out to be a European fluke merchant in his first season despite doing shite in the league, that's happened to mid table managers before you know.

Cutting wages? Don't be daft it's a completely different scenario than if a club gets relegated or any other club gets a sustained period out of the Champions League. Our commercial income alone is more than double yours and growing exponentially, it makes up nearly 70% of your total income and thats not taking into account our Gate Receipts which are over double yours so even if you're earning more through TV rights in the League and UCL, your turnover still won't come close to ours and we still have a huge amount left to play with.

In fact, if you wipe out our Television money all together we're still nearly £50m better off per season than you.

This summer will very much be a case of speculate to accumulate for the Glazers. They know if they don't invest in the team, the other revenues will suffer in the future.

You have a lot of players on a very high wage, it's not a very good habit to get in to to be fair as it can agitate other players and cause all sorts of problems with existing players. Also you can't complain about City spending to get success if you use the same ploy.

Spending to success is fine if it's relative to your own success.

Every penny United have spent in the last 30+ years is money that the club has earn't on the back of it's on field success. It's very different to spending hundreds of millions earn't through oil. Money that would cripple the clubs but for the wealthy owners.

It's the reason why I will always have more respect for yourselves and Arsenal than I will for City or Chelsea.

And also, as I said, we can sustain the high wages without Champions League football thanks to our ridiculous revenues through Sponsorship's.

I like the way Saoirse's question was answered so she resorted to the old "you can't complain about other teams spending when you plan to do the same" line. No one here has a problem with teams spending. United broke transfer records on numerous occasions, so we're under no illusions that we've spent a lot of money in our time. Spending your own money is one thing. Spending the money of a Russian or Arab Oil baron is different. You surely see that?

I think that's a sentiment echoed throughout the football community regardless of rivalry, sadly though football has moved on from actual football and it's all just business, Liverpool going into Europe after a time out will go in as a brand in the shop window. United and it's falling stock value will have also alerted the financial playboys, seems that these days you can just go head and purchase yourself a history, you would think that City had been an ever present the way they spin it.

United has been a spending machine since it's growth into the financial monster it is today, our demise has come since we decided not to break any more of our own transfer records since the Berbatov signing, we're paying the price for that now as Roy Keane pointed out but the Glazers are what they are and they are clearly huge risk takers financially, look at the amount of debt they took on in their buyout, I shit myself buying my first house ffs. I cannot see that type of personality being phased by laying out millions in order to sustain our business model.

The only way this season can get any worse is if Liverpool win the league. People keep saying they won't win it but if they win today they are well and truly in the title race. Even the thought sickens me.

Go Arsenal, Go City, Go Chelsea!!!

Yes. I agree with this. I'd rather City win the title than Liverpool. If Liverpool win the season after Fergie retires we will never hear the end of it. The smugness levels will make City 2012 seem like nothing.

I'm praying for Chelsea or Arsenal (though I think their standard February slide is just starting) but if neither of them come through, yes, I admit it, City over Liverpool.

I still dont see it. I can't see them finishing ahead of Chelsea under Mourinho or City's brilliant squad, for instance.

Is this their best chance since the PL began? No Fergie, no great side in the league this year, no European distractions, key players fit and on fire...

Next year Chelsea will likely have Cavani. City will spend again & Pellegrini will have had an extra year in the league. Now's the time to strike for Rodgers.

They had a better chance in 09 (?). Weren't they like a point off us? This time they have three teams with better players than them and all ahead of them.

2009 was also a great chance but we finished 4 points ahead of them, & going by memory it was quite comfortable for most of the year. One little wobbly patch from us put them back in it. But we had a Fergie side then that contained Ronaldo, Rooney, Berbatov and Tevez. Different gravy to this years lot.

All depends on what motivates the player I suppose. If it's money, then you're more than welcome to him. If it's playing in an exciting young side managed by a young manager with modern ideas, then he might think differently.

You might piss yourself mate but it won't be with laughter, that's for sure. Fergie's United side that won the first PL in 1993 were not exactly a team of world beaters. I seem to recall you didn't have a great deal of competition back then. It was a great starting point though for your manager to build much better sides over the next 15-20 years.

& do you know why our CL win in 2005 wasn't a fluke ? Because 2 years later we came very close to winning it again.

If they win the league the smugness level is going to be set to 1,000. Please Mourinho, whatever it takes, stop them.

It's going to be unbearable if they win the league.

Hope Spurs pip them to 4th as unlikely as it sounds.

Most of that squad went on to prove themselves again and again.

Pipe down Barney. There's 3 points to play for tonight and this over confidence never bodes well. There are 3 teams I want to win tonight, Liverpool, Newcastle & Palace. Lets secure top 4 first, anything else will be a HUGE bonus this season.

We can mathematically still win it but we won't.

Liverpool won't win the league because there are at least 2 squads in the league which are better than theirs.

Absolutely not. Our turnover this year will be around £425m with wages I'd estimate around the £185m mark. Even deducting CL income from that turnover would still be < 50%. The best ratio in the League regardless of Champions League income. To put it into perspective even without Champions League income we'd have to spend more than £80m per season (around 7 Rooney's) more on salaries to hit the ratio Liverpool are currently at.

Funny little fact - to reach the wage ratio Liverpool hit back in 2011 (over 70%) - United could actually pay both their entire squad and Liverpool's this season.
