Arsenal vs. Manchester United

I've grown a little bit more in confidence for tonight, I think purely because it's Arsenal and our player's have little to lose now.

Wouldn't it be great if the Fulham game, and others before it, were all part of a long-con from Moyes and co...

Make everyone think that all we do is Cross... go out of our way to prove it, then in this game, everytime we shape to cross, we actually do something entirely different! Arsenal won't know what's hit them....

You're missing the long long con. We'll continue doing that in the league, dropping the tactics for a few non-cross goals to get us a few points as not to give away the complete con. In the Champions League we'll leave it until the last minute or play out 0-0 draws and winning on penalties. We'll "luck" it right to the final, and then BAM. We beat Bayern (who by this time have hired Rene as their consultant for additional advice on how to nullify us), it'll be 6-0 inside 20 minutes before they even realize what is happening.

I'm more confident before this game than I would be for most games, despite them over-achieving this season...

I think it'll be a score draw or we'll nick it, Moyesie Style

This seems to have caused an uproar. No one's suggesting we should bench him. My point simply was that I think Moyes is more likely to bench Mata and play both Young and Valencia than drop them both and play both Mata and Januzaj today.

I could be wrong ofcourse as he may be desperate enough today to try what we've all wanted for a while now.

Actually...

However we should also drop Young and Velencia in the bargain, i'm not making a pitch for Contrary as a new tagline. ;)

I've just been told that Jones has injured his hip in training and could be out for some time. Someone read it in the MEN.

is Fellaini not fit?

why wouldn't Carrick or Fletcher play there? or Cleverley

any injuries to these guys??

Well that would be in addition to Fletch and Clev from my PoV. It's not that Carrick is injured or i at least i don't believe that he is, just a personal preference to leave him out of the starting XI tonight.

Yes!!!

in the bag for the Moyesiah

If we had a defence as such to put out, I'd say a draw was on the cards but there's no way we can sustain a defensive game for 90 minutes. Got to go there and have a go.

Talksport have Evans as a confirmed absentee for tonight's match, i must confess that i didn't realise his injury was that clear cut.

Smalling and Vidic tonight then?

At least that means Rafa at right back.

Is anyone else, oddly, really excited for this game like me? Even through all the shit we have been through these couple of months, I always feel we bring some sort of good game against le Arse. Plus it will be amusing to add to their mid-feb collapse I suppose, we need something to laugh about.

I'm excited for every United game to be honest with you - even in this current slump, the gaps between games seem longer than ever

With a 10 day break coming up Moyes has no need to have one eye on the next fixture, so it comes down to whether he's going to react to Arsenal or dare Arsenal to reach to us. There is no right answer but given everything that's gone on recently I highly recommend Moyes put his cock on the table and go for shock and awe.

De Gea
Rafael Evans Vidic Evra
Carrick Giggs
Mata Rooney Januzaj
RvP

I don't know if Evans is fit, but if he is (and assuming Jones really did pick up a new injury) then that's that. You might quibble with Giggs, but who else? Not Fellaini (new injury, right?) and not Fletcher (who disgraced himself against Fulham). Maybe Cleverley, but Clevz has a bad habit of spraying balls to the opponent in his own third. Giggs can't go a whole 90 but he keeps things neat and clean in front of him and still, after all these years, has a great eye for the killer final ball.

Objections may be raised about omitting Valencia and Young but neither offer anything that would concern Arsenal. The gonners have no one who can defend Januzaj. And there's no way we're going to spend 37m for Mata and bench him after being our best player in the three matches he's played so far and a long rest coming up.

Another option would be to drop Rooney back alongside Carrick and play Kagawa higher up in a central position. That really could work but Rooney wouldn't stand for that and I wouldn't blame him. He's paid a King's ransom to create and convert scoring chances, not to protect Evans and Vidic.

And if we lose to Arsenal, we've only lost to the favorite going into the match. But if we win, it will be a famous win. We have zero chance of winning this match is wheel out Valencia and Young and have them do the same old thing minute after minute.

Go for it, David. Your future as manager of United can only be saved by being brave. You know the old saying from the American West: It's better to die with your boots on than to live in on your knees.

Before the Chelsea game (and for the 15 minutes of that game!) I was convinced that we were going to cause a glorious upset. I'm struggling to feel the same about tonight.

Me as well. Last night I watched full match highlights from like 3 or 4 previous games away to Arsenal over the years, the 4-2 in 04/05, 2-2 in 07/08, the 3-1 in the champions league, etc. Rooney always brings his best against them, lets hope he can do it again. I actually think we might win it to be honest, everyone is expecting us to lose and them to win, like against Chelsea, but this time we have Rooney, RVP, Mata and then one of the other wingers playing compared to Welbeck, Januzaj, Young and Valencia.

I've just heard some of Moyes' pre-match statements, an emphasis upon "our resilience" is likely suggestive of the approach he'll opt for.

I would imagine so.

And whilst i agree that Rafael should be the first choice in the position, it is worth remembering that Smalling put in a fine defensive display when used at right back against Arsenal previously.

Rio might not be in favour with the management but needs must regarding his place on the bench later.

I've never been less bothered about a line-up or formation as I am today. I just want to see 11 players leaving everything out there and cutting out the most ridiculous mistakes.

If it's not a hospital pass, it's just stopping standing still and letting someone run by. If it's not missing golden chances, it's hitting crosses into the least dangerous areas. I hope Carrick can build on his performance on Saturday (albeit under no pressure at all) and I hope Wayne Rooney can play a pass in a forwards direction. Just those two things would make us look so much better, let alone all the other nonsense that needs correcting.

Agreed. I just want them to play without fear for a change.

If I had anything to do with Arsenal I'd be targeting Evra and Vidic. They simply do not concentrate throughout games.

Paddy does like playing against Arsenal though, if they are too gungo-ho down that flank it should leave plenty of space through which he can return the favour.

Just press them hard from the start and give them no time on the ball. This worked perfectly for liverpool and Arsenal are always uncomfortable under pressure. If we go there to defend or see how the game plays out will get nothing out of this match.

Dont know how bad the London weather is , Manchester is horrific, is the game still on ?

There have been some pretty sharp showers as well as a burst of hail so i gather, yet the heavens would seem to have taken a break fro the moment [a tad chill and blustery of course].
