Where do you expect us to finish this season?

Neck on the bloke time. I think we will finish 5th. I'd prefer not to have the Europa league next season as we could thin the squad out a bit and concentrate on getting back into the CL, but at the same time, the EL would be good for Moyes' progress.
We are showing signs of having a more settled team to select, so maybe that will shore our defence up a bit, which will enable us to pick up more points.
I still think Fellaini back and fit will be huge for us, I'm sure of it.

I'd fancy our chances there more than when it comes to a top 4 finish in all honesty.

how's that. have you forgotten how we were destroyed the last time we dropped in on the Europa? and that was under fergie!

If we did win the Champions League, the gloss would actually be taken off a bit if Liverpool aren't 4th.:)

we really neeed to stop this winning the champions league business. it's getting embarrassing.

Yep but it was a mismatch between us and Athletic, they weren't better than us strength wise but won easily because we couldn't cope with their style. We haven't even been beaten that comprehensively by better sides in the Champions League other than perhaps Barcelona in 2011.

Nah, what's embarrassing is stuff like this. We're in it to win it, we might, we might not. Anything can happen in 90 minutes. If Burnley can beat United on the opening day of the season then we can beat a team in the CL final. Let's not all jump off a cliff now eh? Look at Chelsea's completely undeserved win. Not to mention the posts were completely tongue in cheek to begin with before you strutted in trying to piss all over everyones chips.

CL win is obviously going to happen that there isn't much point discussing it.

In the league we'll finish where we are now going off current form, but I know we can do better so I'm not ruling us out moving up the table just yet.

We didn't undervalue SAF but there is no way that he is worth 30 points a season. With Mourinho I think that we would have got around the same points as last season and at-least make a decent challenge for the title. With a lesser manager like Pellegrini/Ancelotti etc we would have done again well though not as good as last season. With Moyes we aren't gonna get even Europa League and this isn't because of the players. Maybe we overrated our team a bit but there is no way in hell that this team is so much worse than Liverpool and Arsenal, let alone Spurs and Everton.

He is compared to managers which take time to stamp their own personality. Maybe not to managers who walk in and out of clubs but are shorter term glories.

Undeserving? Beating Barcelona and drawing with them away after being 2-0 down with 10 men, then beating Bayern in their own stadium after being 1-0 down in the 84th minute? My friend there has rarely been a more deserving win in history, unless of course you class the most deserving team as the one with the most chances and possession, or the one thats apparently ' the better team'

Does Moyes fall into this category? With Everton he seemed to instantly turn them into an upper mid table outfit and then leave them there? He certainly didn't strike me as a manager who needs 5-6 years to mould a team in his name (he'd have been sacked at Everton if he did!)

Damn liars.

Looks like the rules take effect from 2015/16 along with the Europa winner rule.

http://www.london24.com/sport/uefa_confirm_new_champions_league_qualification_rules_1_2209012

Not sure you can take anything from that article...

"Infantino did not confirm the full details, but it is understood that Europa League winners and Champions League winners will no longer take a place from the domestic leagues if they finish outside of the Champions League qualifying spots."

Even if true, that is essentially in line with the current rules - it is only the top three associations which are the exceptoin to the rule that you don't take a place away from the league.

Haha that made me chuckle

I know, its annoying when people confuse fortune with deserving. We put in some heroic performances that all true United fans would be proud of if it were their team and players.

So people cant use the term deserving/underserving or lucky/unlucky?

They can but they can use it correctly. Chelsea deserved it because they won fairly and against all odds, and thats different from saying we were fortunate.

You're barking up the wrong tree mate. I've had this futile discussion countless times.

There should be a seperate trophy, awarded after the Champions League final, to the team "most deserving" of the Big Ears. We could use metrics like ball possession stats, number of shots that hit the bar/post, and the amount of beautiful aimless dribbles that were made

Wheres the one for pulling back a 2-0 deficit to the supposed best team on the planet in their own back yard? :p, thats worth 4 points alone.

Barcelona would win it every season! :D

From here 4th will be a fairly decent turnaround. Liverpool playing well is a pisser.

I'd say that even 5th - an 8 point gap - would be a remarkable turnaround.

Undeserving is the wrong word but certainly incredibly lucky would fit perfectly. Chelsea were nowhere near the best team in the CL that season and got a lot of luck in drawing Barcelona when they did, right after an incredible clasico if I'm not mistaken.

And we need not dwell on the negative tactics.

But a trophy win is what it is and no can deny how lucky United were in 99 when Bayern dominated us in the first 90 minutes.

We really need to NOT finish in a Europa League spot

the way tottingham, Liverpool and generally everton are going, we might not have to do anything except carry on as we're going!

Think we will finish 7th which is unfortunately going to qualify us for the Europa league, even though I think we will lose another heap of matches, the teams that could over take us are basically Newcastle and Southampton who will drop points just as regular.

Interesting scoring system. At a glance I dont think either of our CL victories would score higher, would they?

I said a few weeks back that we would definitely be in 4th possibly in 3rd but i would have to be realistic, it looks like we are adrift of the top 4 and so i dont see any progress we will end in 7th place.

Based on our form since January 1st, I will estimate that we get a whopping 14 points the rest of the season to finish on 56 points. A scant 33 short of our 89 last season. At best, we'll finish 6th.

Nah, but I don't think the weighting is very correct either.

Also, I thought about it last night and "winning the League or Champions League the previous season" needs to be in there... as that was the criteria for qualifying prior to 199x. Something we didn't achieve in 1998 but did achieve in 2008.

Edit - Also you would think winning the Super Cup and Club World Cup, as well as getting to next years knockouts, would count for something!
