Shinji Kagawa

Against Sunderland in the league cup one month back.

He has started in 7 League games so far which averages to a start each month or every four league games.

What a joke.

I know he hasn't been great this season but surely a player of his talent should get more time.

The Kagawa and Fabio situation have been the most frustrating to me.

He should do more when he does get games. For all the flack Valencia and Young have gotten this season, Kagawa looks our least effective player on the flanks and hasn't done enough when he does start in the hole to suggest that he should get consistent games there.

Kagawa hasn't been great but he should have a number of assists if not for poor finishing. Simply, he creates more and is more talented than Young and Valencia and it's pretty obvious.

Sadly Moyes opts for physically gifted players who work hard over skilled players and you are what you are when you do that - a midtable team.

Physically gifted players like Januzaj, Young and Mata then? Or like he did at Everton where he played Mirallas, Pienaar, Osman and Arteta?

Young and Valencia should never start for United as there are far more talented players available. I don't care what he did at Everton. He is obviously playing it safe so far at United with Young and Valencia playing to much.

If you listen to what Moyes said about Mata being able to play across the front line, I think that he wants to create a team with a fluid front 3/4. Players like Rooney, Januzaj, Mata and Welbeck are all technical and can interchange position whereas Kagawa only seems to be any good in small area of the pitch when everything around him is setup just so. If he fails at United, his lack of versatility will be the reason. Valencia is in the same boat.

I would argue Kagawa seems to be good not in a small area of the pitch but when we attack at a high tempo and with a lot of movement off the ball.

This season we have done the opposite and so naturally Kagawa has struggled. I'd rather reserve judgement on his ability until I see the team playing at a high tempo and having players make a lot of runs.

Did Pienaar and Mirallas not come central more often than Valencia does now and Baines + Coleman attack down the flanks?

If so, why is Mata / Kagawa not played like Pienaar and Januzaj not played like Mirallas?

As in, why Valencia? Or is it so he would replace Mirallas had Moyes had him at Everton?

The only thing I can come up with is the very real fact that they are stronger on the ball and arent as lightweight as Kagawa and Mata. Also Moyes might be under the impression that at United you need to have a proper winger getting forward and crossing the ball as we're used to. Unfortunately he forgot the part where our wingers put good quality into the box.

Cesc Fabregas on Shinji at evoPOWER promo event:

"I saw Kagawa play brilliantly in the Confederations Cup. His contribution in the match against Italy was phenomenal. At United, they have Rooney, they have Robin. At a top club like that, you need to put in your best performance every day, and that requires confidence, but also luck. I'm hoping he can succeed, as I don't think there's any doubt he has the quality to play for the top clubs."

Cesc Fabregas on Shinji at evoPOWER promo event:

Nonononono Cesc, haven't you gotten the memo? He is not united quality. A bunch of chubby guys on an internet forum said so!!! ;)

Well.. a fluid offense with supporting fullbacks isn't really a thing most clubs want to avoid.

Cesc Fabregas on Shinji at evoPOWER promo event:

I will take what Cesc says with a pinch of salt since he referred to Danny Welbeck and Cleverley as being two of the premier league's exciting young talents.

That said, it's quite apparent how good Shinji is in a team that suits his style such as Japan.

I thought the performance was very good too however it is not vastly different to what he does for us except far more movement from Japan than you see at United. The difference between Fabregas and many fans is that he doesn't just judge him on the ball in terms of attack but off it too. It is quite good how he positions himself in the middle of three players so well, and then continually drifts to keep a distance the opposition defence doesn't know who should be picking him up. This in turn creates space and time for our other players, this was problematic for Brazil too early on when he was drifting centrally.

When I point out those small things, at least in the newbie forums, I was referred to as a Kagawa fan boy. I'm only commenting on what I'm seeing though and those who disagree either don't see it or I'm seeing things.

I hope Moyes sees what I see too and he can convince him to stay one more season. I hope the reason he isn't playing him is because our team doesn't seem to play at a high tempo and lacks movement, something he plans on addressing in the summer. He probably has tried this season but the team just always resort to crossing. Kagawa does that 'safe' pass but with Japan, he passes short, runs into a much better position quickly and receives the ball in a better position. At United he does the same, gets into that better position wanting the ball back but doesn't receive it because the player he passed to has played it long. This so called safe passing is actually quite a good ball retention tactic and common sense.

Look how deep he often comes for the ball, it's a travesty we have not put him to good use. He simply has not had the chances, people saying he should be doing more in the chances he gets, but its very difficult to build up some form if you are in and out of the team. I wish we can hold onto him.

Cesc has just compounded what we all already know. Welbeck, Cleverley and Kagawa would all look better than they do now, in a different team. You know this, I know this, everyone knows this.

I hope we can keep him and hope we can find a way to give him more game time. Mata is not able to play Olympiakos so i hope Moyes gives him a start in that game doing a similar job to mata. I think to compete at the top in all competitions we need high quality depth and hopefully we keep Kagawa because we need high quality depth.

I dont agree with you here, I think Kagawa is very versatile. Timing is the issue. Fergie bought him and many players need time to fully settle in which i think was happening in his first season with us. Then in his second season he gets clobbered by a new manager finding his feet, an emerging talent, a full on off season and the need for rest and recovery. A combination of factors I think has contributed to his lack of game time, mostly out of his control. Hope we keep him, he can have an important role for us.

He will probably start on Tuesday as Mata is cup tied. He's got the rest of the season to try and impress.

Personally I would not be to disappointed if he left in the summer in light of Rooney signing his contract and Mata joining us in January. Rooney has signed a long-term deal and we have signed Mata and Adnan has come to prominence which mean things are very different from the start of the season. I'm not sure where Kagawa fits with all of that and he's down the pecking order.

If RVP left I'd be more inclinded to keep him but I really don't see that happening.

You really believe we'll start him in a knock out CL match after not playing for something like a month? I hope so, but doubt it. Valencia or Young. Or if we don't want to start Adnan twice in three days - both!

Januzaj is a necessity on Tuesday. I'd love to see the front 6 except Kagawa instead of Mata. I think with Fellaini and Rooney in the lineup Kagawa would have it much easier, as there was far more movement involved today.

Kagawa started all but one of the Champions League games and it's mainly been Mata that has stopped Kagawa getting game time, so I could see him starting. I don't think Januzaj will play on Tuesday but think Valencia probably will start.

If Kagawa had played at all in the last few weeks I could have seen him getting a start on Tuesday. But his time on the pitch wasn't limited, he just wasn't given any and at times wasn't even on the bench. Doesn't strike me as someone about to be launched back for a CL knock out match.

We'll know soon anyway...

OH WOW!

Man, those two examples certainly put the issue to bed ONCE AND FOR ALL!

God, how STUPID I was to think that Rooney was a far superior player to Kagawa.

I now see the error of my ways.

I have seen the light. I have awoken from my slumber. The erroneous myth has crumbled before my eyes to reveal the TRUTH.

I am truly converted.

Thank you.

For you have saved me from my waking sleep, stirred me from my unconscious zombie state and showed my the path to true SALVATION.

It's baffling. Has Moyes ever been asked about this at the pressers ?

Yep he is toast, we have a limited manager who can't get the best out of a talent like Kagawa. Its best for him he goes somewhere
where they play proper football and can recognize his talent properly.
I'm no Moyes fan but it goes both ways. Kagawa himself is known to be frustrated with himself and his inability to adapt to the physical differences in the Premier League.

It's not really that baffling. RVP and Rooney are back and we have just signed Mata. That basically means 3 attacking slots are locked and fitting Kagawa in the same side as Mata, with neither of them being out right wide players, is not easy.

United have played 5 games since the signing of Mata so not exactly a lot of matches missed either. He was an unused sub today.
