Olympiakos vs. Manchester United

Judging by the huge jump in pages posted I guess we're not happy with the lineup then
Kagawa is on the bench ffs we can change it round once we've felt this side out, how dare Moyes try keeping things tight in the first leg away from home.

Ask any fullback whether they prefer a winger ahead of them who will stay wide or cut in field and they will say the wide man.

This is about structure. Hodgonesque even.

100 per cent WUM.

Bloody hell....it's Olympiakos, not Bayern Munich. We'll be fine with Val and Young.
Yes we'll be fine, but you should say the same to the negative manager we have in charge, say it's olympiacos, we'll be fine with januzaj and kagawa on the wings, you know talented players, and not just extra fullbacks in the winger positions.

There's something wrong with the lineup when every single opposition fan laughs at it. United fans and moyes supporters will look for excuses, but it's just going to not lose against olympiacos.

Smalling at right back. Cleverely, Young and Valencia in mid-field. Yes, we're away from home ... but this is such a statement on Moyes's intent and tactics.

That's probably the truth and that in itself is sad, we're more worried about them than them of us.
I agree! Sir Alex was a gambler, and look how that worked out. I guess Moyes is too conservative.

It's amazing that Moyes has frozen out Kagawa to such an extent that he's basically not even in contention for games anymore. This would be a good game to give him a run and to continue the 4231 from the weekend, but Kagawa hasn't played in at least a month. Instead, we revert back to his tumescent 442 with the worthless wonders on the wings. He talks about playing down the wings as "how it's done at United" and the same about rotating the squad but he's absolutely clueless.

Didn't even notice Rio is playing again too and we have no CB or RB on the bench.

Let's see how we play before we put the knife in. Line up doesn't fill me with confidence, but at the very least we should let the team play. If it's all hoof and cross, It's two steps back after one step forward. Becomes very difficult to justify any progress being made.

After seeing that lineup I don't see us having enough to win here. Draw possibly.

Think I might start a Quote and Shame thread if we play well and win. "Supporters" shouldn't be allowed to get away with such insulting criticism of our pre-match team.

How is playing 4-4-2 defensive?

Firstly, lets hope its not a proper 4-4-2 as there'd be absolutely nothing to link our 2 strikers with the midfield. It'l definitely be Rooney dropping deep playing virtually as an attacking mid. Now, if it was Kagawa in place of say Young, we'd actually have 3 proper attacking players and given his style, might say some good football. But now it will be 2 defensive wingers and given their style, we wont have much of a choice but to keep going out wide.

Wow, awful team. Smalling right back, Young on the left, Cleverley in the middle? Flat 442 presumably? It's like everything that's kept me awake at night this season all at once.

I really thought Saturday was us turning a corner.

My worry is that in a high pressure situation this is what Moyes reverts to. What does that say about the man?

Let's chuck him in then eh

I seriously hope you are joking here.
Again 4-4-2 is really an attacking formation... It would make sense if you argued both our wingers have not been very productive.

Biggest joke is that neither Valencia or Young are actually that good defensively. Young is lightweight and Valencia has made some ridiculous defensive decisions this season. No doubt once again Valencia will, at some stage, decide to stand still at the far post watching as an Olympiakos players creeps in to shoot as we have already seen many times this season...

Both would contribute more than Kagawa defensively, I dont doubt that. It'd be needless though as we should be more positive.

I'm going to cry again. At least give us Giggs in the hope he has one of his dazzling displays. We effectively win the tie tonight then we can rest players in the second leg before the Liverpool game. I can see us making it difficult for ourselves once again.

Bloody hell....it's Olympiakos, not Bayern Munich. We'll be fine with Val and Young.
So why change the style from one that was successful and showed much better football? Use same system to get the players in the right groove. Hes being defensive and going for the draw.

One of val or young I would have been fine with but both just makes us too two dimensional. Its one thing setting up for the counter attack, but we havent been able to do a decent counter all season, we have been far too slow and val cant make a decision

How is playing 4-4-2 defensive?
It's not playing defensive as such but employing Young and Valencia in the same team gives you a couple of players that will at least track runners and work back. I do feel Valencia's defensive work is rather shite myself but he will at least track and cover.

Defensive wingers, and attacking full backs? You young 'uns are strange.

Well since that obvious flaw in our 442 system hasn't stopped us from trying it all season, I wouldn't count on it

Atleast try and understand the point of the criticism ffs. No one's complaining because they think we'l lose this. Its Olympiakos ffs. Nor that we'd be dire, we have good players. We could definitely be more positive though and play a more varied/attractive style.

Let's chuck him in then eh

My point was that we can't because Moyes refuses to play him. I didn't expect him to start and don't expect him to see the pitch. It would be dumb to start him after not playing him since around October. We are now limited to Young and Valencia in Europe because Moyes won't play Kagawa at all, he won't play Januzaj in Europe, and God knows what Nani is doing. I'm sure Olympiakos, Bayern, and Madrid are all shaking at the thought of those two.

We'll probably still get a result as olympiacos simply aren't very good, but we're allowed to criticize the selection. It's a forum ffs. He's going defensive against e worst team in the knockout rounds. We're Manchester United, not Everton, something moyes hasn't realized yet clearly.

This is effectively our Champions League away team even if we draw Bayern or Madrid in the next round.
