Mesut Özil

Wenger in the media today saying that he's still recovering from that penalty miss. I can't get my head around someone who lets their head go down after missing a penalty that early in a game.

Wenger is such a clown, cue another 18 months of him mentioning mental strength when he realises what he has said.

Last thing Arsenal needed in the summer was another mentally weak player.

I think Wenger's finally realised he should probably give him a rest so he's giving himself an excuse to do it. We won't see him for a couple of weeks, I'd imagine.

This thread is amazing. A couple of poor games, more than likely due to fatigue and people start claiming he has been terrible all season etc. He's a truly world class player, whos importance and contribution to his team goes much further than assists. His movement and vision for little ones twos creates so much space for his teammates. He's a great player in poor form, that's all.

Some of us have been highlighting his 'averageness' since the beginning of November, to be fair.

It's his first season in a much more physically demanding league. He's been running on empty for a while now I imagine, given his increase in completed matches. He's shown more than enough to suggest that he will adopt similarly to Mata and Silva in my opinion.

If Arsenal still have hopes of lifting the prem trophy -- they can forget about the CL and the FA Cup is a waste of everyone's time, although you do have to go through the motions with a stiff upper lip -- Wenger will have to play Ozil. This is no time for "rest", as any gap that emerges over the next few weeks is a gap that cannot be closed.

You don't need to manufacture consent to rest a player, if you do, things are not all well. I am surprised Ozil hasn't been rested more.
I'm a massive fan of his, but he always seemed to be rested as soon as a game was won, even at Madrid, where the average 90 mins is arguably less demanding than in the Prem. I do think Wenger is doing nobody any favours by still banging on about a missed peno.

He is an easy target but he'll come good. Especially once our injured players are back and when we strengthen over the summer. Like Balu mentioned, he is a bit of a specialised player rather than someone who can adapt into any team.

He has played 4 games in 11 days so I think despite what happened against Bayern he'd probably sit this match out. I'd put him on the bench and bring him on if needed. We don't want the situation we got with Ramsey when overplaying him seems to have caused an injury

Ozil-bashing is getting ridiculous... I think he has it in him to turn the corner for next season and he'll be better for the experience.

He's not a flair or flashy player.

British media love someone like that, a Gerrard or a Bale or a Suarez. Explosive players who contribute to the game in a very outward (For lack of a better term) way.

Ozil is a lot more subtle, he won't score a 30 yard screamer or volley it into the roof of the net, that is not his game and coincidentally it makes it more difficult for people to appreciate how truly good he is.

Look at how long it took for Scholes to be fully appreciated in this country, the fact that he was shunted out to the wing for the national team so lesser players could play in midfield was an absolute disgrace.

Ozil could dictate the play from midfield, put three chances on a plate for Giroud to miss and the press would still come out and say that he had a terrible game because he didn't score a goal or create an assist, ignoring his effect on our overall game.

He can improve of course, no denying that but he's second on the assist charts in the league so what does that say about all the players below him (including Silva, Mata, Hazard, Navas and Aguero)?

Yep, the bashing in here is far to excessive, particularly by Rob. His ability shouldn't be questioned which it seemingly is by some, but his mentality and attitude has to be. He was never going to be some colossal, leading figurehead in the team and the team need to be catered to his style. At the moment he isn't thriving to the best of his ability due to the lack of runners and pace ahead of him.

His mentality is questionable and not something someone should expect to drastically change, but there are many variables in his dip in performances since the turn of the year.

Thigh problem, according to Wenger, which is probably not true. He's being rested.

Definitely a good move. It's against a relegation team, and can be dealt with with the players they already have. No point putting him in when there are more important games at hand. Give him time to rest and he will be back to playing much better than his recent form.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's next season before we see him in form again, looks like he's suffering from a bad mix of exhaustion and lack of confidence.

This is the great thing about football. Because it is not quantifiable like other sports like cricket and basketball, it provides an opportunity for forums like this to flourish with hundreds of post like this one talking complete rubbish.

People are perfectly capable of appreciating good players who create chances for others. Ozil's not been doing that for months.

If everyone saying that Ozil has been crap this season is just pushing an Anti-Arsenal agenda, how do we explain him getting booed by Germany fans? Do they have an anti-Arsenal agenda too?

It's a bit more complicated. The game against Chile was definitely crap and the team as a whole deserved the booing.

Özil getting booed had more to do with the fact that the game was in Stuttgart, their team is currently fighting relegation and the audience was always rude and crap. They also booed Manuel Neuer who happened to be one of the best players that evening. They simply picked out some easy and unpopular targets.

Sure, Özil is currently questioned by a broader audience than during his time at Real Madrid. The Premiere League is simply under a lot more observation in Germany than the Primera Division. Doesn't mean he deserved to be booed for his individual performance.

The German nationalteam was booed at home quite a few times in recent years. Schweinsteiger experienced something similar a year ago. The whole team doesn't give a feck in friendlies and the ticket prices aren't cheap, so I do understand the fans if they're not happy, when they have to watch the players walking around the pitch, doing at best what's necessary, often not even that. Singleing one player out sucks though. Özil had 2 or 3 great moments, including the assist for Götze's goal, but other than that his performance was incredibly shit, he just watched the midfield and left wing getting overrun time and time again. He wasn't any worse than quite a few others though. Pretty sure, if Kroos was subbed off, he would have been booed as well. It had nothing to do with Özil's season so far.

He was absolutely magnificent today. What a performance. Scored after five minutes, ran the show from there on in.

Wonderful passing display - smoother than the hallways in Ceausescu's palace.

His vision, movement, bursting runs, phwoar, what a display.

His hand movement for Giroud's second goal sums him up - he indicated where Giroud should move. He's ahead of everyone.
